Name changes are very common in the hard left leadership tradition. Just think Lenin, Stalin, Tito, and the current occupant of the White House, for starters.

Obviously, as far as De Blasio is concerned, much better politically in New York City to come across as an Italian than a German named "Wilhelm." Nonetheless, the "Bill" is undoubtedly a remnant of the original "Wilhelm." Not too sure about how strong his alleged Italian roots really are, though.

Who knows, could it be that the man currently named "Bill DiBlasio" is descended from German royalty? If you have ambitions of running for public office as a far leftist, it's best to disguise that as much as possible. That would be a good reason in and of itself for a name change.
