Tonight on Special Report with Bret Baier both Tucker Carlson and Charles Krauthammer were excoriating Cruz over the issue of Obamacare defunding. That's fine.
If you think he's wrong or foolish or whatever, make the case.
But as part of their arguments each brought up that Cruz was born in Canada. Carlson mentioning that there were questions as to whether Cruz could be president and Krauthammer joking that Cruz could be Prime Minister of Canada.
What did that have to do with anything? The topic was defunding Obamacare and Senate strategy.

The Framers never expressed what “natural born Citizen” meant
Be that as it may, there are several concepts enshrined in the Constitution that are not specifically spelled out because at the time, they were assumed to be unassailable or linguistically pure enough to be beyond argument (i.e. common knowledge).
In cases of a lack of a pure definition, I believe the Founders entrusted the citizens of the Republic, the People, to be the ultimate arbiters of the truth as it should be understood. Just because the term is not defined does not mean the Founders did not intend it to mean something. Perhaps, at the time of drafting, the term "natural born" was understood to mean something that was common knowledge and never questioned. The fact that they further elucidated "or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution" tells me that they understood that someone might be foreign born but in the future, that would not be the case, hence the definitive use of "or" or a lack of use of this phrasing at all.
I'm not trying to read more into this than there is, but I believe the Founders would've wanted us to define "natural born" in the confines of "jus sanguinis" where both parents were holders of citizenship in the United States only. In the case of Barack Obama, his father was a British subject, making Obama "jus soli" but not "jus sanguinis." I believe Ted Cruz, for the reasons stated in the article, is not a "natural born" citizen in the strict interpretation of "jus sanguinis" since his father was a Canadian citizen.
Then again, I'm neither an historian or a legal scholar. I'm just a citizen of this Republic trying to stay educated on her history and her future.
FWIW, I think Cruz would make a damn fine president.

If it was found that Obama was not a NBC, the Constitutional crisis we’d face would be massive. I can’t read 800 posts to see if this was already addressed or not. Also it has been posted on previous occasions and you may have seen it. I implore you to take the time to actually read the whole thing. It’s dry at times and harder for non-lawyers like me, but it is the best and I would say indisputable proof of what a natural born Citizen is.
He covers EVERYTHING! You could not read and understand this essay without knowing exactly what a natural born Citizen is and ALWAYS was, WITHOUT A DOUBT. Original intent, case law, natural law, common law, British law, constitution, amendments, framers, founders (Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, James Madison, David Ramsay, George Mason), historians, dictionaries, definitions & meanings, law books, treatises and cases, Vattel validated, legal principles of the Supreme Court, and on & on.
I thought I knew alot about this issue, but I was blown away by the depth to which (screen name, sourcery) has gone to prove the meaning and intended and actual constitutional meaning of natural born Citizen (and citizens of all stripes for that matter).
Screw you, Tucker Carlson.

I agree. Krauthammer talks a good line and leads people to believe he is conservative until its time to actually make a stand, and then all the sudden he advises against doing anything substantial. He does the elites bidding by attempting to mislead conservatives by pretending to be a conservative with a voice of reason. Krauthammer is just a flunkie for the elite ruling class.

I realized a long time ago that they were out of touch. They are more interested in maintaining their credentials as Washington insiders than anything else. People who live and/or work in Washington see the world through a distorted lens. In the end, they go along to get along. Cruz threatens to shake up their safe little world; and for that reason, they are attacking him.
They are just in there punting for the GOP elites. Its going to get real messy between now and 2016. We all need to stay strong and not listen to these guys. What could possibly rescue Barack Obama from all these political problems and create a distraction that takes all his scandals off the front page? Only one thing: the Republicans.
By making a futile and foredoomed attempt to defund Obamacare, congressional Republicans have created the distraction that Obama so much needs. Already media attention has shifted to the possibility of a government shutdown.
Politically, it doesn’t matter that the Republicans are not really trying to shut down the government. What matters is that this distraction solves Barack Obama’s political problems that he could not possibly have solved by himself.
Should Obamacare be defunded? Absolutely. It is an economic disaster and will be a medical disaster, as well as destroying the Constitution’s protections of American citizens from the unbridled power of the federal government.
For that matter, President Obama deserves to be impeached for arbitrarily waiving laws he doesn’t like, in defiance of his oath of office and the Constitution’s separation of powers.
But, for the same reason that it makes no sense to impeach either President Obama or Chief Justice Roberts, it makes no sense to attempt to defund Obamacare. That reason is that it cannot be done. The world is full of things that ought to be done but cannot in fact be done.
The time, effort and credibility Republicans are investing in trying to defund Obamacare is a high-risk, low-yield investment.
Even if, by some miracle, the Republicans managed to get the Senate to go along with defunding Obamacare, President Obama can simply veto the bill.
There is a United States of America today only because George Washington understood that his army was not able to fight the British troops everywhere, but had to choose carefully when and where to fight. Futile symbolic confrontations were a luxury that could not be afforded then and cannot be afforded now.

I know the essay you're referring to. I've posted the link to that incredible piece of work many times on FR. It is absolutely one of the very best explanations of the subject that I have ever run across, and should be required reading for anyone wishing to discuss NBC on this site.
