Posted on 09/23/2013 6:22:37 PM PDT by Jim Robinson
WASHINGTON Federal officials often say that health insurance will cost consumers less than expected under President Obamas health care law. But they rarely mention one big reason: many insurers are significantly limiting the choices of doctors and hospitals available to consumers.
From California to Illinois to New Hampshire, and in many states in between, insurers are driving down premiums by restricting the number of providers who will treat patients in their new health plans.
When insurance marketplaces open on Oct. 1, most of those shopping for coverage will be low- and moderate-income people for whom price is paramount. To hold down costs, insurers say, they have created smaller networks of doctors and hospitals than are typically found in commercial insurance. And those health care providers will, in many cases, be paid less than what they have been receiving from commercial insurers.
Some consumer advocates and health care providers are increasingly concerned. Decades of experience with Medicaid, the program for low-income people, show that having an insurance card does not guarantee access to specialists or other providers.
Consumers should be prepared for much tighter, narrower networks of doctors and hospitals, said Adam M. Linker, a health policy analyst at the North Carolina Justice Center, a statewide advocacy group.

It is intended to destroy one of the best healthcare systems in the world.
How is it that the cost of Insurance In California is said to be set to increase by 70 percent...while these people go on about new New NEW Lower Cost Unsurance?
We will see higher premiums and fewer choices.

Wonder how people will like the $10,000 deductible they will have with that cheap mandatory health insurance?
According to the Georgia Insurance Commissioner, a single guy in his 30s currently pays around $43 a month. Next year, that’s 3 months from now, it will go up to $108 a month. I don’t see how someone working at McDonald’s can afford that.
Obama will blame it on the pubbies somehow.
Correctamundo! Fewer choices, fewer doctors, less care, death panels, rationing, the IRS looking up you ass, er, name and address rather than your doctor AND higher, MUCH higher costs!! And less freedom everywhere. Fewer jobs, fewer hours, less productivity, less work, less pay and with the now unlimited government snooping and controlling every little aspect of our lives.
What insurance premiums are they looking at?
Scarcity is the regular status of this world. Shortages are government created. Obamacare is creating a shortage.
It won’t be cheaper. It won’t be better.
And all you have to do to get an exemption is to convert to Islam.
Spent time today with my doc talking about this.
He said it’s already horrible, he has no idea what will happen. He’s already gotten visits from the Obama Nazis, who were armed with orders signed by Obama. He said they basically spent the day giving him and his office a proctology exam. He said there are over 100K new insurance codes. He is NOT happy.
As for us, we have been notified that our cancellation letter is coming. They are pushing people off the premium PPO’s onto standard , or HMO’s, and it will cost the same PLUS an extra 2% “ACA fee”.
I mean, there is an extra ACA fee attached to all the premiums. Never heard about that from Obama!
There is no healthcare coverage.
That isn’t true.
If anyone wants to see some estimated premiums in the California Exchange, you can fill in income and family details here:
It give you the estimated monthly silver plan premium.
I don’t line in CA but it turned out this calculator gave some pretty good estimates for my own state, whose calculator came out a bit later.
“Next year, thats 3 months from now, it will go up to $108 a month. I dont see how someone working at McDonalds can afford that.”
They can’t. The deal is people making lower wages like the gift they get from the fed as a “tax return”. They will no longer get the gift from Uncle Sam they have given with no interest.
May make peopl wise up and claim 10 dependants so the gov takes out less money each week.
There is no enforcement in obamacare right now. Later there will be.
Federal officials? Okay....(rolling eyes)
Oh the MSM are out there already cherry picking examples of how much people will save. They are making no effort to address the under 50 crowd that is healthy and won’t buy the insurance. The other thing they are not addressing is the cost and subsequent rises in rates that will take place as soon as the insurance companies get into it for a year or so. And finally, doctors will simply not accept the reimbursement rates and refuse to take many people.
Looks like my premium will quadruple.
I’d like to see some substantiation on that.
Can you provide the subsection of the law that references this?
The only religious exemption I can find is for groups that are currently outside the Soc Sec system, which includes Amish and Mennonites.
Platinum: No deductible
Gold: No deductible
Silver: $2,000 Medical Deductible
Bronze: $5,000 for Medical and Drugs
Mine is going up around $90 but, then, I’m in a new age category also.
Not for family vato. Add it up.
Hey! I read it on the internets!
Well they must mean it will be lower for the people who will get if for free like the people who get the obamaphones, They will see lower or no premiums while you and I will be paying for it and in my case I will get to pay a penalty but will have no insurance because I wont be able to afford the premiums. FBO
Yes, I think that is individual. Max out of pocket for family I just posted.
No offense but I’m not buying it until I see some links.
Muslims aren’t exempt. He was joking or just spouting off. It has been claimed many times on FR but isn’t true.
LET ME TRY THAT AGAIN
Maximum out-of-pocket for one:
They did a news article on a DFW local station tonight. Two health navigators were walking the street and went up and knocked on an apartment door in shady neighborhood. Fat Mexican holding a light skinned kid came to the door. The two insurance whores started telling him how he and his family was eligible for insurance. No way in hell is that guy going to pay $2 dollars fo insurance for himself and his half dozen kids and esposa.
They will just keep showing up at the emergency room and expecting free healthcare.
Govt involvement will lower premiums... sure it will.
Ultimately, fewer choices will translate into more sick people, followed in short order with more dead people — many of whom were perfectly content with their coverage and their plan before ReBamaLosi “reformed” healthcare.
“Federal officials often say that health insurance will cost consumers less than expected...”
Guess they “expected” much higher rates. Still BS but it sounds better.
The hospitals do get federal funds to try and offset those unpaid ER visits — that’s one thing they’re trying to reduce but probably won’t work.
Invest in rope. I predict a lot of it is going to be needed in D.C.
One of the things that is happening to my doctor clients: Networks are combining behind the scenes and docs are ending up in networks they know nothing about, did not agree to join and would never join because of the incredibly low reimbursement rate.
If this happens with enough doctors, managed plans will find themselves with no doctors for patients to see.
“Dr. Barbara L. McAneny, a cancer specialist in Albuquerque, said that insurers in the New Mexico exchange were generally paying doctors at Medicare levels, which she said were often below our cost of doing business, and definitely below commercial rates.
What’s the point of participating for providers if the reimbursement is below cost? This will be insurance in name only, access will be terrible, and the best solution will be the penalty for most middle and lower income folks.
Also, they've been telling us everyone can be insured now. In typical liberal fashion, they leave out that while you may have "insurance" per se, you may not be able to pay the copays or deductibles required to actually use it. But that doesn't matter. It's not about health. It's about the jackboot on your neck.
Communism never works.
The myth of lower premiums won’t survive the first year of Obamacare, nor will the economy.
the regime...never expected this bill to be used.
its was deisgned to further DIVIDE people
when word gets to the “underclass” that they are getting this BIG Freebie....because of middle class WORKING people...it wont be pretty and Obama doesnt want it to be.
the >”right” people< have gotten their chance at making it work this time ...and its already fallen flat on its behind. amazing that
He is evil I am afraid of him. Honestly it seems to me since he was elected in 2008 there has been constant turmoil and lots of big and bad things happening and I do not find them a coincidence.
Went to doctor today and was asked to sign off on new HIPA forms release. Asked doctor what the hell was this for? New government requirements for electronic forms and releasing of information if requested. WTF!!!!
Did not sign and told him would not sign. Told him to get on with his work and government can stay the hell out of my medical records. He proceeded without signature.
Anybody else run across this male bovine scat??
Oh, the irony of that website you linked. It says, on the side, that if a family of 3 has an income of $26,000 or less per year, they are eligible to sign up for Medi-Cal. Medi-Cal is the same program I grew up with—which has covered the poor in CA for as long as I can remember.
This idea that we needed some sort of massive federal government program to make sure everyone gets coverage has always been a lie. There have been programs to cover the most poor all along.
I buy insurance for my son. It started out at $160/mo (kind of expensive). Thanks to Obamacare, it has gone up to $233/mo (even more expensive). All I want is a policy that will cover emergencies... policies that cover everything just increase the cost of medical care.
