Source in Ted Cruz GQ Article Is a Disbarred Convict

The source of the allegation that Cruz refused to study with grads of ‘lesser Ivies’ was disbarred in June

An alleged Harvard Law School roommate of Sen. Ted Cruz (R., Texas) who was quoted provocatively in Jason Zengerle’s profile of Cruz for GQ magazine is a convicted DUI offender and a recently disbarred attorney.

The State Bar of California website lists Damon Christian Watson’s status as “disbarred” and prohibited from practicing law in the state of California, Watson’s current state of residence.

Watson was disbarred by order of the California State Supreme Court on June 21, 2013, stemming from a failure to comply with the terms of a 2011 public reproval that followed a criminal conviction of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, according to the California Bar Journal.

Zengerle neglects to mention Watson’s current status, using Watson as the sole source of a key segment of his article:

The elite academic circles that Cruz was now traveling in began to rub off. As a law student at Harvard, he refused to study with anyone who hadn’t been an undergrad at Harvard, Princeton, or Yale. Says Damon Watson, one of Cruz’s law-school roommates: “He said he didn’t want anybody from ‘minor Ivies’ like Penn or Brown.”

National media and Cruz’s ideological adversaries seized upon the quote since the article’s publication and have promoted it extensively as proof that Cruz’s populist persona is more contrived than authentic.

Wonder who paid him to smear Sen. Cruz? There are so many suspects, it’s difficult to single out just one. No one should believe any dirty exclusives like this one, knowing that the Chicago Democrat thugs use Saul Alinski’s rules as their bible, since they don’t read the real Bible.

I can understand about Brown, but I thought Penn was OK...

so let’s get this straight. GQ quotes this alcoholic to trash Cruz. The article I suspect is 100% negative?

I’m liking Cruz even more now.

I don’t care if Cruz is the most arrogant, insufferable SOB on the planet. I’ve got two senators from my state who are really nice guys and stick their fingers in the air and check with the lobbyists before every vote. I’ll trade them for Cruz in a heart beat.

It’s not just the character of the accuser, it’s the accusation he is making. Cruz supposedly only wanted to study with grads from top Ivy League schools. That’s all they can come up with?! ROFL.

I'm outraged! Outraged, I tell you!

Not 100%. But there is a definite bias to it and it's not in Cruz's favor.

Wow. The smell of desparation is awful strong here. These losers will try anything to find dirt on Sen. Cruz.

I agree. Pretty damned week. It's still better than spending all his time on the "Choom Squad" like Soetero.

Remember when they found the rock on the property of some ranch that had been rented by Romney thirty years ago, and the rock had a racial epithet painted on it, but the side that bore the offensive word had been turned to face the ground?

National news.

It was Rick Perry - not Romney.

Jason Zengerle, the writer of the GQ smear piece has a history of shabby smear tactics. The guy is a real dirt ball.
