Wild Hogs Roam Streets, Scare People Near Atlanta
atlanta.cbslocal.com ^ | 9/24/2013

Police have enlisted the help of a trapper to round up a group of feral hogs scaring residents of a subdivision in suburban Atlanta.

Some parents fear sending their children to a school bus stop in the Lithonia area, where up to four of the hogs are roaming the streets and eating trash in front yards.

Authorities hope the hogs can be trapped in cages by Wednesday morning, DeKalb County police spokeswoman Mekka Parish said.

“They’re causing quite a stir to say the least,” Parish said shortly before noon Tuesday, as she headed out to the neighborhood, about 17 miles east of downtown Atlanta.

The police department’s animal control officers were at the scene, but the plan was for a volunteer trapper to actually capture the animals.

Gee, you’d think in the South some good ol’ boys would’ve pulled the rifle off the rack of the pickup and fixed the problem already. Especially a free pork dinner right there in the front yard!

But... Atlanta has way too many Yankees who would freak out if they saw a regular citizen with a firearm in Suburbia.

Here in rural Alabama a firearm is just another tool. My neighbors would no sooner freak out over a firearm than they would with me wielding my rake, weed-whacker or hoe.

Yes, they do. But it is a bit dangerous to discharge a firearm in a subdivision.

I think the big hogs are difficult to bring down with even a 5.56 unless hit in a vital organ.

On the other hand, this is a good argument for a 30 round mag.

Some of those feral hogs can get big. They are strong and dangerous. Get one and the others might get you. I suggest licensing bow hunters to cruise in pickup trucks.

“...In the early 1900s, several animals escaped from their enclosures at a hunting preserve at a mountain known as Hooper Bald in North Carolina, and they mated with feral hogs in the surrounding area. That population then spread into other areas of the Southeast, including Georgia, according to research done by Dr. Jack Mayer of the Savannah River National Laboratory in Aiken, S.C...”
-
Dr. Jack Mayer is an idiot when he says,
“animals escaped and they mated with feral hogs”
where the hell does he think those feral hogs came from?

It is just plain stupid for him to say that all wild hogs are a result of a single incident.

It only takes a generation or so for domestic pigs to go feral in the wild.
There have been literally thousands of times that pigs have gotten loose from a farm and bred in the woods and swamps and developed into feral hog populations.

The article is not clear as to exactly where this incident occurred in the Lithonia area.
I am only one county away from there.

Best solution is to release some Wyoming wolves and Florida panthers in Lithonia.

They'll have to pigs under control in no time...and Yankees and yutes too.

I have seen that article before and I believe he was
talking about Russian or German wild boar that mated
with feral hogs. They had been brought over to a
hunting preserve and got loose.

Yep.

I am in South GA and that is a good business (and popular sport) down here with a few folks.

The AR is the weapon of choice...with 30 rnd mags and red dot optics. They usually use night vision equipment also.

I’ll expound, the killing of hogs should be done before they become nuisance in urban areas. But, then America is becoming more and more sissified so that probably won’t happen.

No, the human hogs are indigenous only to the DC area and mostly inside the beltway.

If any of those got loose in GA or in the other 57 states...we are doomed.

1. Cartridges for average size feral hogs at short to medium range. Included in this group are the 6.5x54, .30-30 Winchester, .300 Savage, .32 Winchester Special, .35 Remington, .375 Winchester, .44 Remington Magnum, .444 Marlin, .45-70 and similar cartridges. Suitable bullet weights would include 125-140 grain in 6.5mm, 150-180 grain in .30 caliber, 170 grain in .32 caliber, 200 grain in .35 caliber, 200-250 grain in .375 caliber, 240-265 grain in .44 Magnum, 240-265 grain in .444, and 300-405 grain in .45-70. Choose the same bullet designs that you’d use for deer hunting.

2. Cartridges for average size feral hogs at medium to long range. Here such calibers as the .243 Winchester, 6mm Remington, .240 Weatherby Magnum, .257 Roberts, .25-06, .257 Magnum, .260 Remington, 6.5x55, 6.5mm Remington Magnum, 6.5x68, .264 Winchester Magnum, .270 Winchester, .270 Magnum, 7x57, 7mm-08, 7x64, .280 Remington, 7mm Magnum, .308 Winchester, and .30-06 come into their own. Controlled expansion bullets suitable for deer hunting such as the Sierra GameKing, Hornady Interlock, Remington Core-Lokt, Federal Soft Point, Nosler Solid Base, Speer HotCor, and Winchester Power Point are commonly recommended. Examples of suitable bullet weights would be 100 grain in .243, 115-120 grain in .25 caliber, 120-140 grain in 6.5mm (.26) caliber, 130-150 grain in .270, 139-162 grain in 7mm (.28) caliber, and 150-180 grain in .30 caliber.

Those all should work but they are in a residential area and all have a long “carry” even after going clean through the hog. Might be a job for an expert archer.
