Gay NY Opera Protesters Promise More Sour Notes for Russian Performers

WASHINGTON, September 24 – Gay rights protestors who raised their voices and disrupted the start of the New York Metropolitan Opera’s Russia-centric opening night gala on Monday were singing victory on Tuesday, and planning new ways to pressure high-profile Russian performers to speak out against their country’s controversial legislation on homosexuality.

“As we continue to press Russian artists who come to the US, and as we continue to pressure Russian public figures who come to the US, I think we will begin to see folks in Russia begin to question the wisdom of this law they have passed,” said Duncan Osborne, one of the protesters and a member of Queer Nation NY, a New York-based group that works to end discrimination against the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community.

The season-opening gala is a cornerstone event for New York society and opera enthusiasts. But the performance of “Eugene Onegin,” written by famed Russian composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky, and performed by two Russian stars, was a tempting target for protesters.

The Monday night gay rights protest was aimed at world-famous Russian opera diva Anna Netrebko and renowned Russian conductor Valery Gergiev, both were headlining the opera at the Met and are supporters of President Vladimir Putin.

Patrons in black ties and sequined evening gowns were greeted outside the venue by what Queer Nation NY says was an estimated 150-200 chanting protesters passing out flyers, rainbow pins and holding a giant rainbow flag that has come to symbolize the gay rights movement.

200 queers outside chanting would have been amusing to me.

Hope it rains on them next time.

““I was one of the four people who was inside the theater. I’m the person who yelled, ‘Anna, your silence is killing Russian gays! Valery, your silence is killing Russian gays,’” he added....“Once security nabbed him, I jumped up… and I started bellowing, ‘Putin. Stop. End Your War on Russian Gays!’ over and over and over again.”

I kinda figured it wouldn’t end with a peaceful protest outside the theater. Gotta have that self-righteous drama queen moment.

Still, this *is* relatively tame compared to the garbage ACT-UP used to pull. Remember their storming of St. Patrick’s Cathedral back in the 80s? Really classy, that. /s.

Russia is right. We see the evidence everywhere. Gay propaganda is as pernicious as the the population is diseased.

Yes it is tame in comparison. Makes me want to go to the NY Opera and see the Russian Performers. So do gays think all Russian’s represent Putin? That is real dense.

“Gay NY Opera Protesters”?
If homosexuals can be in the military, then they should be able to be in the opera. Filthy, stinkin’ opera homophobes.

Remember their storming of St. Patrick’s Cathedral back in the 80s?

Yes, 1990, I think. They didn't storm it. They would have had the s#^% beat out of them on the way in. They snuck in, pretending to go to Mass, as Cardinal O'Connor knew they would. He had ushers hand out copies of his homily while the cops collected the inverts and hauled them out.

It was better when the poofters tried to stop Cardinal Ratzinger from speaking at the Citicorp building in 1988 by popping up and making noise the same way. The audience threw them out on their a$$%#, passing them off to the NYPD.

Looking forward to seeing this on the Met Live in HD October 5.

However, the statement is inaccurate. While the brilliant and beautiful Anna Netrebko is Russian, Mariaus Kwieczen, who plays Onegin, is from Krakow, Poland.
