In any other context, this would be political satire. Instead, it’s a tragedy for religious liberty and just plain old common sense. A group of Catholic nuns dedicated to social service — and, needless to say, chastity — had to file a lawsuit in Colorado to block enforcement of the HHS contraception mandate on their organization:
Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius finalized a contraception mandate that ignores the fact groups like the Little Sisters of the Poor are religious organizations, according to a lawsuit filed to protect them against fines for refusing to comply with an Obamacare mandate.
“We cannot violate our vows by participating in the government’s program to provide access to abortion-inducing drugs, Sister Loraine Marie said of a class-action lawsuit filed against the mandate on behalf of multiple religious organizations that provide health benefits.
Here are the employees of the LSP that HHS’ mandate insists have a need for employer-provided contraception:
Yes, these women certainly will be oppressed unless HHS rescues them by forcing their employer to subsidize their sexual activity.
Joel Gehrke reports that the Thomas Becket Fund for Religious Liberty has taken the case for the Sisters. The suit has been filed in Colorado, where the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals granted an injunction against the mandate on behalf of Hobby Lobby this summer. That’s a key for the Little Sisters, as Hobby Lobby had a tougher argument as a commercial operation for a religious exemption, and the precedent should work in their favor. In fact, the only reason LSP doesn’t qualify for the HHS definition of their exemption now is because LSP services people regardless of religious faith, as their Catholic mission to the world demands.
Becket senior counsel Mark Rienzl put it well to the Washington Examiner:
These women just want to take care of the elderly poor without being forced to violate the faith that animates their work. The money they collect should be used to care for the poor like it always has — and not to pay the IRS, he said.
Any law that requires a lawsuit to get to that common-sense conclusion should be thrown out, as well as the politicians that passed it.
If they refuse, what can the government do? Disband them?
Affordable Health Act...
Justice Roberts sabotaged the US Constitution with his political decision....Obamacare is UNCONSTITUTIONAL...Get behind Ted Cruz and the others to stop this outrage on our lives.
“We must obey God rather than Man” — St. Peter ( Acts 5:29)
I’d like to see the IRS try to harass them... We’ll see how many “Catholic” politicians have the balls to defend the Sisters’ constitutional rights.
Well, the republicans and all their pundits, Hume, Bennett, etc will tell them they can’t win so they should just get used to paying for killing people.
As Ted Cruz said yesterday, no wonder the approval ratings for congress are so very low. I don’t recall the particular issue to which he was referring, but this lukewarmness is not getting this country where the taxpayers want and need, expect it to be
The govt. has ways to shut them down.
Stop taking gummint money. If you do not take gummint money, tell’em “bless yer heart” and go on with your business.
Hey, the muslims and the Amish got waivers? Why not the Catholic church? Fight on sisters....
RE: Stop taking gummint money. If you do not take gummint money, tellem bless yer heart and go on with your business.
Nope, not gonna work. If a private business can be forced by government to service gay weddings, and devout Catholic organizations that depend solely on private charity, employ people FORCED to pay for contraceptions, telling the government “bless your heart” is not going to keep them away.
What we need are enough Americans who will RESPECT the constitution and vote the bums out of power.
This did not happen in 2008 and 2012.
SeekAndFind hits the nail in post #4. I'd like to see them try!
I don't believe the LSP take "gummint" money. They are a mendicant order, and rely totally on alms for their funding. It's the Diocese that take "gummint" money. Of course, that wouldn't stop Sibelius and the IRS from seizing their land, which was probably donated to them, and selling it, throwing the sisters out on the street and putting the elderly into "gummint" nursing homes - watch, they'd probably do it, too.
Our current government hates Catholics, and wants to eliminate them.
Obummer needs a chastity belt right in his nose
“What we need are enough Americans who will RESPECT the constitution and vote the bums out of power.”
Not sure there are enough of them still around outside of this forum and others like it.
I am suggesting that we all stop just doing what they ask under some misguided idea that “its the law”. MAKE them pull their fascist crap. MAKE them throw old people on the street.
If we are waiting for new dawning enlightenment of our fellow voters to suddenly vote the bums out, I think we are going to be waiting a heckuva long time. That chance was lost in 2012. If you couldn’t do it then, you never will. NOT UNLESS you have some very public excercises of power that stir folks to action.
Just look what was happening to Ted Cruz,,,I couldn’t believe that each and every Pubbie in the Senate didn’t at least stand in support of his position. But no, folks in his own party were sniping at him.
Yeah...I am SURE the mere act of voting will turn this around.
I’m willing to listen to reason but my opinion is that we have passed a tipping point. At some point, the anger will boil over.
