Russia Unveils ‘Terminator-2’ Tank Support Vehicle
NIZHNY TAGIL, September 25 (RIA Novosti) – Russia’s Uralvagonzavod defense manufacturer on Wednesday unveiled the BMPT-72 tank support fighting vehicle, dubbed the “Terminator-2,” at the Russia Arms Expo 2013 in Nizhny Tagil.
The BMPT-72 is an extensive modernization of the world-famous T-72 main battle tank, also produced by Uralvagonzavod. Compared with its predecessor – the BMPT – the BMPT-72 has an improved fire control system and better turret weapon station protection.
“The key advantage that the BMPT-72 gives to all the counties that operate T-72 tanks is that they can promptly and at minimal cost upgrade their armies to an ultra-modern level, and enhance capacity, mobility, protection and armament without purchasing new high-cost machines,” Uralvgonzavod said in press release prior to the Nizhny Tagil show.
The BMPT-72 is armed with two 30-mm cannons, two 30-mm grenade launchers, four launchers for 130-mm Ataka-T anti-tank guided missiles, a 7.62-mm machine gun, and two 81-mm smoke grenade launchers.
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said Wednesday that the idea to build new heavily armed tank support vehicles emerged on the basis of experience acquired by the Russian military during the First Chechen War in North Caucasus, especially during the urban fighting in Grozny in 1995 when Russian troops lost a large number of combat vehicles to “guerrilla warfare” tactics used by Chechen separatists.
Rogozin, who oversees the Russian defense and space industries, said future versions of the BMPT would most likely be based on the platform of Russia’s highly anticipated new main battle tank: the Armata.
One machine gun, but two 30mms and two grenade launchers? Odd.
Those are captured German “Goliath’s”.
Many were used on the D-Day invasion beaches, but most failed because the command cables were severed by the incredible artillery barrage.
In many places, German units removed the explosives, and used them as Combat Ammo carriers, instead of the mobile mine they were designed for.
Is that for real, and where did it come from?
Twin 30s would burn up a lot of ammo on buildings. I think this is another “Be Everything” vehicle. Doesn’t carry dismounts, though.

I don’t think Chelyabisnsk has made any tanks after 1946.
In fact Russia has two major centers for tank-building: Nizhniy Taghil (UVZ company - a builder and developer of T-72) and Omsk (Omsktransmash company - a builder of a T-80 tank which is a radical update of T-64 left over in Ukraine along with a Harkiv tank plant).
It’s notable that T-72 was developed as a cheap unrelated alternative to a T-64 which has entered service in 1967 and never exported outside USSR. Originally, T-72 was made for Warsaw pact and 3rd World nations.
By late 1976 T-64 has developed into T-80 (as much over engineered and never exported as well), and T-72 evolved into a T-90 by earlier 1990s.
Both T-64 and T-80 were by all means a superb designs of it’s time but Soviet military has eyed an export model T-72 for it’s price and maintenance costs. They simply fond it unnecessary to have an over engineered superior tank in a WW III European theater with an estimated lifetime of minutes for any tank.
It made sense because as for 1987 a T-72 was priced at 340,000 to 420,000 rubles (with more or less advanced fire control and protection suites making the most difference) and T-80 has started from 830,000 and up to 1,150,000. A gas-turbine engine alone for T-80 was over 100,000 rubles comparing to 15,000 for a T-72 power plant.
AFAIK by late 2000s Omsktransmash is out of business completely with it’s price politics and their future tank R&D was bought by UVZ to simplify and incorporate some technologies into both T-90 and own future tank.

In fact so-called Terminator or BMPT is not new. UVZ is marketing it for many years based on an experience of the First Chechen War there an entire armored brigade was trapped and destroyed by jihadis in a city. This one is specifically designed for urban environment to deal with threats like RPG-teams on high-rises etc.
That sounds like the development trail of the 2S9.
A 120mm gun on a BMD chassis, that could elevate past 50 degrees. The Soviets needed it in Afghanistan.

Yes, but it is not the best solution for urban mission profile.
I think UVZ has to grant a few Terminators to Assad’s forces to evaluate.
Judging by youtube videos they have a perfect environment to prove if it’s concept worthy or not.
