Obamacare sign-up effort finds urban allies in 'red' states

Behind the political battle lines on Obamacare, the three-story headquarters of Change Happens rises like a fortress in a blighted southeast Houston neighborhood of tiny wood-frame shacks, empty lots and crack houses.

The Rev. Leslie Smith has been running the nonprofit that helps poor adults and children with Medicaid enrollment, homeless support and HIV prevention since 1989. Now he is planning how best to reach uninsured people in the communities he serves with the offer of new healthcare benefits under President Barack Obama's landmark reform law.

"Two weeks ago, there was a shootout at the corner that left over 200 shell casings on the ground," Smith said, speaking in the parking lot as he noted a row of first-floor windows set high and narrow to protect against stray bullets from gunfights between rival gangs. "This is the bottom. This is crack alley. All the ills of the community are around us."

What, pray tell is healthcare going to do for people who keep living/hanging around “empty lots and crack houses”? Wasn’t Kinnison the comic that did the routine about starvation-yelling of course you’re starving-you live in the f’ing desert...

You see, it’s like this. When thugs shoot each other, they will be more likely to die with the long wait for 3rd world care they will have under Obamacare. So, there will be fewer thugs on the street (and various others to shoot), so the whole place will be healthier and safer, get it?

He will be selling a bill of goods. There ain’t no healthcare in Obamacare. It sounds like some of it’s more taxes for our slimy lawmakers to steal.

Either that, or they will give the meth heads a ‘scrip for free valium, Xanax, hydrocodone, etc so they can OD on clean, legal stuff-or sell it. Either way, it is pretzel logic...

I’m Catholic and have leaned libertarian since about 14, and I’m going galt as soon as possible-I think I’m beyond help...

The worst shame is that the feckless and foolish will buy the government-will-save my-ass snake oil that he and other misguided ministers are selling.

The uneducated greedy never change. They are really going to be slaves if this monster isn’t stopped.
