Former President George H.W. Bush and his wife, Barbara, were the official witnesses of a same-sex marriage between two women in Maine over the weekend, a spokesman said on Wednesday.

The former first couple witnessed the private ceremony on Saturday in Kennebunk between Bonnie Clement and Helen Thorgalsen, according to Jim McGrath, a Bush spokesman.

Clement posted a photograph on her Facebook page of President Bush signing a piece of paper as the couple, close friends of the Bushes, watched and held champagne glasses.

The couple owns H.B. Provisions, a general store in Kennebunk, Maine. The former president owns a compound in Kennebunkport, about four miles (six km) east of Kennebunk.

Maine is one of 13 states that allows gay marriage.

Nice puff piece. The media is pushing this story. See, prestigious people such as former President GHW Bush are on board with homosexual marriage, so of course we should be too. No other reason to report this.

He wasn’t exactly a great president.

W was better and more conservative, but the strange thing is that I always felt for some reason that he wanted the approval of his liberal Connecticut rich guy father and that was one of the things that had him always looking over his shoulder.

Probably Ronald Reagan’s greatest mistake, buying the liberal media narrative that he to pick moderate country club Republican VP to “balance” the ticket. (Reagan would have beat Carter in 1980 no matter who he would have picked)

OMG! Senile old fools. Always respected him, but I do remember he had to switch from pro choice to pro life in order to be Reagan’s Veep. It’s not hard to change your core beliefs if you really don’t have any.

Bill Graham needs to pay George H.W. a visit to set him straight.

George H. W. was the Liberal the GOP establishment saddled to Reagan to try to “moderate” him. Anyone who saw him as anything else was fooling themself.

THIS is why he lost. he took a 85% percent approval and squandered it so he could do “this”.

DC country clubbers who have no place in leadership.

Perhaps he should go watch british tv shows with John McCain.

At least he is being honest in his old age. One can conclude that GHWB was either a fraud during his political career or that he is nothing more than a weathervane or dead fish floating downstream.

Moral of the story - to save traditional marriage, traditional conservatives have to actually show up to the fight and bring the fight to the opposition at all levels, from grassroots activism on up. They need to take the initiative and explain why people should be worried about it, explain why it is in fact an attack on liberty, in particular religious liberty, and explain why opposing redefining marriage the way we do does not mean you are devaluing anyone;s humanity.

Relying on politicians of any stripe to do all of the work for us is only gonna lead to letdown after letdown.

I always thought he picked him because he came in second place.

I knew they picked him to placate the Republican Country Club set.

the Episcopalians have given leeway to their bishops to bless these ‘unions’.
