Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz believes that Fridays procedural vote in the Senate over a spending bill that defunds Obamacare is the most important vote he and other lawmakers will take all year.
In a conference call on Thursday with journalists and bloggers, Cruz said: In my opinion, the cloture vote tomorrow is the most important vote that I will have cast in the short nine months I have been in the Senate. I think its the most important vote any of my colleagues will cast this year.
House Republicans passed a short-term spending bill known as a continuing resolution on Friday that keeps the government running for the rest of the year while simultaneously defunding President Obamas unpopular health care law.
Cruz supports that legislation. But his strategy is complex: the senator says he will actually vote against cloture which would let that bill inch closer to a vote in the Senate on Friday because Senate majority leader Harry Reid has vowed to remove the defunding Obamacare language from the legislation.
According to that thinking, Republicans would refuse to vote to allow the bill to proceed to a vote until Reid agrees to bring up the House bill including the defunding Obamacare language for an up-or-down vote.
On the conference call, Cruz argued that a vote against cloture on Friday is a vote for defunding Obamacare.
The vote that matters is the vote tomorrow on cloture, Cruz said. Any senator who votes yes on cloture tomorrow is voting to give Harry Reid the power to fully fund Obamacare. I will vote no on cloture tomorrow. That vote is the fight.
Cruz said he is encouraging Republicans to join him, though he knows many currently oppose his strategy.
Based on their public statements, a significant number of Senate Republicans currently intend to vote with Senate Republican leadership to support Harry Reid and the Democrats and to allow Harry Reid to fund Obamacare, he said. I hope by tomorrow, thats no longer the case.
The first thing that has to happen is we have to unite Republicans, Cruz said. The second thing that has to happen is we have to start picking off Democrats. Until we unite Republicans, we will not succeed in picking off any Democrats. And right now, unfortunately, where the effort to defund Obamacare is running into its most significant obstacle is in working to unite Senate Republicans.
Cruz made his pitch to senators still on the fence: Whether Senate Republicans vote against giving Harry Reid the power to fund Obamacare will depend on whether Senate Republicans listen to their constituents. Every single Republican ran on fighting Obamacare. And I guarantee you, the constituents of every Senate Republican and for that matter, every Senate Democrat understand that Obamacare is a train wreck, its a nightmare, its not working and its hurting millions of Americans. And any senator who listens to his constituents will vote no on cloture tomorrow.
Cruz has become the face of the defund-Obamacare strategy, pulling off a 21-hour long extended speech on the floor of the U.S. Senate on the topic Tuesday and Wednesday.
I hope that over the course of this week, we have made some real progress in terms of focusing attention on Obamacare and what a disaster it has been for the American people, Cruz said. Obamacare is the biggest job killer in this country. Millions of Americans are facing the prospects of losing their jobs, or not being hired at all, are facing the prospects of being pushed forcibly into part-time work, or facing sky rocketing health insurance premiums and are facing the risks or the realities of losing their health-insurance.
Asked if hes gotten some sleep, Cruz laughed and said, I have.
Cruz also laid out his favored strategy if Reid successfully stops the defunding Obamacare movement in the Senate: he wants the House to pass smaller, continuing resolution bills so the government will keep running.
If we defeat cloture tomorrow, and Harry Reid digs in and will not allow the Senate to move forward on any continuing resolution that defunds Obamacare, than I believe the House is in a position to stand its ground and to begin passing smaller continuing resolutions focusing on our most critical priorities, he said.
For example, the House could pass a bill that continues to fund the military. That bill would then head to the Senate. Individual bills would keep the government running without funding Obamacare, Cruz said.
Now it will speak volumes whether Reid is willing to kill smaller, more narrow continuing resolutions because he is so determined to push Obamacare on the American people, he said.
All year? How about of all time? Since this country was founded? This is a vote whether we become a 3rd world nation or not.
"Hey Joe, can you believe I use to be a millionaire real estate magnate!"
"Yeah, well I use to be a millionaire business owner"
"Hey but at least we got health insurance! Thanks Obamacare!"
Actually those folks had Medicaid, have Medicaid, and will have Medicaid.
Obamacare is for working chumps.
God bless Senator Cruz for continuing the fight against 0bamacare, the RATS and the GOP-e.
Call your Senators.
If they’re liberal Democrats, explain to them that if they vote for cloture, they will effectively be voting to pass a bill that will never pass the House and therefore they will be responsible for shutting down the government. And remind them that the last time that happened, they lost both politically and in terms of policy.
If they’re Republicans, remind them that the GOP WON the 1995 shutdown, that they promised to end Obamacare, and that the base is actively energized against it, so if they vote for cloture they will be putting their seats at risk.
This can help us immensely. You good folks know what you have to do!!! Please do it, right now....TODAY!!! Sign and endorse the Lee/Cruz “Defund Obamacare” Petition this instant!!! Let’s get it over the 2,000,000 signature level as soon as possible!!! 1,820,000 Americans have already signed and endorsed this Lee/Cruz petition!!!
Yeah but I was pointing out that to support Obamacommiecare the rich are going to be taxed into oblivion.
The Tennessee Republican wanted it to be clear that [only] two Republican senators, Ted Cruz of Texas and Mike Lee of Utah, were objecting to an agreement moving up the final votes to tonight.
They hanging Lee and Cruz out to dry, making them look like spoilers for the Nightly News.
The Empire Strikes Back...
I rather doubt it. Most of the rich are smart enough to realize that crony capitalism is the wave of the future. Much like the oligarchs of Russia, the Lloyd Blankfeins, Jamie Dimonds, Warren Buffets, and Eric Schmidts will do just fine.
I’m interested in whether Cruz will support a delay tactic if the cloture vote fails on Friday/Saturday.
I will adopt his strategy. He is the one who has led, and he’s the one who been talking straight on this...both Cruz and Lee, actually.
(And Imhoff, Sessions, and Rubio, I think. Is that right?)
Reid just said they have 4 votes tomorrow at 12.30 Noon
Yes, and US Senator Pat Roberts of Kansas, too.
Also, Mike Enzi, Wyoming.
Cruz and Lee definitely, pretty sure about Sessions.
What are the 4 votes, did he break it down?
Also, when I called Coburn’s office, they tried to spread the lie that Cruz voted for cloture. Exact quote “Did u know after his so-called filibuster, after wasting all that time, he then voted for cloture?” I called them on their lie and he admitted it but I kid you not, Senator Coburn and his staff is doing everything they can to make Cruz look bad. Straight-up lied...if I wasn’t a Freeper I would have fallen for the lie.
I found it...
Just went to Cruz’s Twitter page and it’s hacked- runs the Jon Stewart skit from last night.
I’m flabbergasted at what’s being done to him.
That’s just... wow! Blatantly lying to a constituent.
And yes, you’re educated so you knew better. Think of the hundreds or even thousands who have been told that lie and believe it.
It is an all out assault, by those who r not up for reelection. Inhofe isn’t doing it cuz he is up in 2014.
