'Thirty years ago, on 26 September 1983, the world was saved from potential nuclear disaster.
In the early hours of the morning, the Soviet Union's early-warning systems detected an incoming missile strike from the United States. Computer readouts suggested several missiles had been launched. The protocol for the Soviet military would have been to retaliate with a nuclear attack of its own.
But duty officer Stanislav Petrov - whose job it was to register apparent enemy missile launches - decided not to report them to his superiors, and instead dismissed them as a false alarm.
This was a breach of his instructions, a dereliction of duty. The safe thing to do would have been to pass the responsibility on, to refer up.
But his decision may have saved the world.'

i thought obama saved the world? lowering the oceans and all that....it must be so, his MSMwhores keep telling us...
Looke like president zero has competition on the world stage
In the 1980s...an Air Force general in Europe had cooked up this exercise of sorts...to be unannounced...and have around fifty fighters suddenly in the air and all maneuvering toward the East German border. He wanted to see what the ‘reaction’ would be. It took about two hours for this idea to be terminated and put to rest. Nobody thought it was wise to invite trouble.
Given where we are now, I wonder if he did us such a favor!
have no fear, obama has the red phone beside his bed at all times
except maybe during Benghazi
oh, what difference does it make?
surely valjar would take the call and make the right decision
As a Soviet citizen and member of their military, he probably saw their “technology” breaking-down all the time, so it wasn’t the first time he doubted what he read on his instruments.
If there is truly a “Peace Prize”, I am certain it was intended for persons such as this who are confronted with the decision peace/war. But to waste such alcolades on an unknown and obsucure person would be a waste when it can be given to more spectacular people who have never done a damn thing. But, HEY! Who don’t like “World Peace”?
One does not poke a stick in the hornet's nest unless one has a flamethrower or at least a can of hornet spray as backup. Because you will need them.
Around that time the Soviets instituted a priority intelligence operation called RYAN in which both KGB and military GRU offices around the world were instructed to report any signs of impending attack by the West.
I wonder how RYAN reports may have worked into that command decision (if at all), or whether that incident was a factor in setting up the RYAN operation.
In 1983 Lech Walesa won the NPP. One man who did deserve it and IMHO only Mother Theresa is in his league.
Off topic, but the years have not been kind to Ally Sheedy. She was a cutie...
Thank The Lord for Stanislav Petrov.
