D.C. may use contingency fund in event of shutdown [Every DC Worker Is Essential!]
The Washington Times ^ | 27 September 2013 | Andrea Noble

D.C. Council members are looking to keep the city government running through a federal shutdown by paying employees with funds from the city’s contingency cash reserve fund — a tactic that could avert a showdown with federal officials.

A bill circulated to council members Thursday would designate all city employees as “essential personnel,” allow D.C. Council employees to work voluntarily until federal appropriations are approved and pay employees from the city’s contingency cash reserve fund. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson is expected to introduce the bill at a council session Tuesday — the same day the federal government shutdown would take effect unless congressional lawmakers reach a budget deal.

Isn't that cute! So in a government shutdown, only essential personnel are allowed to keep working. The solution? Make everyone essential! Genius!

Then they all have to come in when it’s snowing hard, too.

This works for about two weeks. Then the CFO of the city will have a private meeting and note that the banks that he has to deal with to pay bills....are a bit disturbed and worried. The mayor is banking on this crisis not lasting two weeks, pure and simple.

It’s hard to say what might really happen. It would be a shocker if we went more than seven days....if you ask me personally. Anything after two weeks would start beg questions of both sides...why some compromise couldn’t be worked out.

I will add...having the Obama Care episode start right at this point....was pure stupidity for the President and his staff. Or maybe brilliant because they were prepared to have it stalled a year, and blame the Republicans for this ‘terrible’ thing.

Let’ be sure that such essential bureaucrats as the NSA eavesdroppers on Grandma’s TEA Party calls can stay on the job. And the National Park Service genius who thought what this nation really needed was a video extolling the Muslim’s roll in promoting women’s rights. Can’t do without that.

If 50% of the feral government disappeared, we would never miss it.

I “lived” in the WDC area for 30 years. Believe me, from what I observed hardly any of the WDC employees are “essential”. I definitely wouldn’t call them “workers”. If there were justice, most would be called “inmates” by now.

If every D.C. worker was essential, the payroll would be cut by about 70%.
