MUSKEGON, MI -- A man who openly carried a holstered gun at a high school soccer game Thursday led Muskegon Western Michigan Christian leaders to halt the contest against Hudsonville Freedom Christian with 30 minutes remaining.
The man, whose identity was not immediately available, was spotted with the weapon by a Warriors assistant coach, who alerted head coach David Hulings and assistant athletics director Fred VandenBrand.
VandenBrand asked the man to leave, but he refused. Instead, he apparently took the firearm to his car and left it there before returning to the stands. His presence, and the uncertainty if the gun was still being carried, resulted in the game being stopped with 15 minutes into the second half.
"I thought it was necessary to clear the field of players and parents," Hulings said. "It is regretful that the boys on both teams could not finish. I am sorry for the inconvenience, but I thought it best to err on the side of caution.
"Although I personally have no objection to, and do support, his right to carry, the school also has a right under the law to ask him to leave."
Police were called to the scene, but it was unclear if the man with the gun was questioned about his intent or his interaction with Western Michigan Christian school officials. VandenBrand said an officer told him that the private school had a right to ask the man to leave, and that the scenario is unprecedented in his career.
"Talking to the officer...we had a right to ask him to leave, and if he returned without meeting our conditions, he could be charged with trespassing," he said.
"I agree with our coach 100 percent. The safety of our players and students is our highest priority and our coach did the right thing in making sure our players and the fans were going to be safe before anything else.
"We don't want our players on the field with someone who has a gun in the stands."
The game ended in a 2-0 win for Freedom Christian as Sam Moss scored once and assisted on David Brown's goal.
Freedom Christian coach Nate Sharpe said it was a weird way to end a game, but he agreed that the school was within its rights to ask the man to leave in a desire to protect players and fans. As far as the game is concerned, Sharpe felt it was one of the best performances his team gave all season.
"I felt like our guys carried the chunk of the play," Sharpe said. "I think it was only the second time in history we beat them on their field. It's a great rivalry and I have nothing but respect for coach Hulings and the soccer culture they have.
"There are no hard feelings."
Freedom Christian (11-2-1, 6-1-1 River Valley) hosts Wyoming Lee at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30, and Western Michigan Christian (6-5, 3-2) travels to Fruitport on Monday, Sept. 30. WMC's next home game is against Grand Rapids Covenant Christian on Tuesday, Oct. 1.
They were just so afraid the gun would unlock the car door and start shooting people all by itself I guess
Now the nut jobs know where to go if they want mow some innocent people down...good luck Western Michigan Christian High Screwl...
A guy legally carries open ... someone says, Hey ... could you leave? ...
So the guy ( being intelligent and reads the scene correctly ... someone is nervous) ...
Takes his gun to the car, locks it in and goes back to the game.
Can you hear the whispering?
Is THAT him?
Yeah ... I saw it ... must'a been 10 feet long full auto machine gun ...
So "a responsable adult" ... (MUST be ... he's a coach ... right?) ... makes the announcement that we don't know WHAT we have in the audience so we're calling the game.
Thank God they got rid of him because if psycho started shooting up the place he could have saved lives and liberals don’t like that.
This is why you never see any soccer games in movies about the old west.
IMHO carry’s not wise to advertise.
If he were up to no good, he would have kept it concealed: too hard to understand?
The coach had the ‘willy-nilly’s’.
You nailed it!
Agree, no need to show his gun.
Hoplophobes are all around us. We need to call out these irrational people and mock them for their mental disorder.
BG’s look for easy marks. A man with a gun on his hip and knows how to use it is not that.
I OC all of the time and never have had a problem. The only way to change the fear people have about guns is to have them see guns on the hips of law abiding people! It really is that simple.
BG’s never OC.
Well good for you.
Well good for you.
And good for the guy in the stands. We need more like him, who are willing to risk the scorn of others in order to do the right and Constitutional thing.
No, I’m not talking about Ted Cruz, I’m talking about the guy who was openly carrying.
I very thankful for those with the courage to take the arrows. We all should be supportive of his kind.
Well good for you as well.
Ps, I really don’t care what you or your twin thinks.
Do you care about the Constitution? It sure doesn’t sound like it.
What would the wimpy little man have done if a police officer had showed up? Would that have been OK to the statist wimp?
I believe I would have been yelling at this coward quite loudly.
When our malls and sporting events are shot up by home grown terrorists
These groups will be looking for people to get and use open carry.
The school has the right to assure the students, employees, and fans are easy prey. I wouldnt attend or allow my children to attend an event in such an unsafe venue, any more than I would allow them to attend an event in a building where the fire exits are chained closed.
So tell us, what differentiates you from those who are raining hatred and scorn down upon Ted Cruz?
All openly carrying, all trained and skilled, two were SWAT and all killed in ten seconds.
Hardly. When our malls and sporting events are shot up by home grown terrorists, these groups will be demanding that all firearms be banned.
Two schools of thought on that and both have valid points. I would like for it to be common place to have a lot of citizens carrying openly to make a statement to the bad guys. Until it becomes a "less-interesting" phenomenon, I'll pretty much keep to the concealed philosophy.
That’s funny, because I could show you 50 stories of people who conceal carry getting attacked in the past year.
OC is a deterrent, there are exceptions of course.
But to think that CC makes one a tactical ninja, is simply pie in the sky dreaming. People who CC get attacked all of the time, while it is indeed rare for those who OC.
Rare my posterior.
This is just from my state.
