The Obama administration plans to spend millions of dollars to place armed police officers in schools throughout the country in a move advocated by the National Rifle Association in the wake of last December's shooting massacre in Newtown, Conn.

The Department of Justice announced Friday it's giving nearly $45 million to fund 356 new school resource officer positions. Funding will be provided by grants from the department's Community Oriented Policing Services, or COPS, office.

So, I’m guessing Obama in all his bountiful omnipotent magnificence didn’t deign to mention this was a recommendation by Wayne LaPierre of the NRA following the shootings in CT? Nothing like that huh? m’kay?

I don't like it.

If the gummint is willing to pony up big bucks to put armed police officers in gummint schools, it can only mean they are gummint cops and I'm sorry ... I don't care if the patch on his or uniform says East Wonderful County or City, you can be assured they will be gummint certified.

No different than SWAT or FBI or some other sycophantic mentality.

And who's to say once THIS money runs out ... the program ends ... ala 100K cops via clinton

I don't like it and I don't trust it

Now you can REALLY give your kids to the gummint for 8 hrs a day.

We should hope that the new officers are well trained and have to qualify with a pistol on a monthly basis. Also, they have to be willing to draw their weapon and use it to take out the bad guys.

The last thing we need are blind, inept, and pc peaceniks pretending to be good gun carrying officer.

Apparently, even as last year, there have been 10,000 armed leos in our schools.

I wasn’t saying Federal Government...LaPierre suggested armed citizens....I’d trust a ‘citizen’ over a government puke any day of the week.

The Department of Justice announced Friday it's giving nearly $45 million to fund 356 new school resource officer positions. Funding will be provided by grants from the department's Community Oriented Policing Services, or COPS, office.

In August, the Department of Justice authorized spending another $2.5 million in Newtown to help compensate police for overtime, forensic work and security since the shooting.

Yesterday I submitted a reply questioning where Obama was to get the $200 million-$360 million the administration announced it contemplated spending on Detroit. My argument is that such money should be appropriated by the Congress of the United States and not by the executive branch. We have witnessed the wholesale abdication of the responsibility of Congress to legislate and to appropriate.

In effect we have said to the cabinet secretary, go ahead and make a law about healthcare in the United States, create 26,000 pages of regulations as you fancy and while you are at it decide whether a young girl should live or die because you have the say whether she should get a vital organ replacement.

So long as Congress advocates is responsibility to do its job under article 1 of the Constitution, we will have a very difficult time getting the budget under control and we will have an ever-increasing risk of executive tyranny.

Just taking off from the wording in the article.

We ALL know ... what WE think something means is 180 out of what THEY mean.

No problem...my beef was that something WLP said is BS but if Obama funds the same thing with his goons, it’s all rose petals and perfume.

“We have witnessed the wholesale abdication of the responsibility of Congress to legislate and to appropriate.”

Here, here. From the shadow government of bureaucracies, (EPA, HUD, DOE, Education, etc.) to lawmaking masquerading as executive orders, the only thing Congress is worried about is getting re-elected as the first order of business.

On a related subject, I had the pleasure of visiting the NRA’s National Firearms Museum in Fairfax, VA. If you have not been and are ever in the area, I highly recommend spending the time to see this great museum. It will require at least 4 hours to see the galleries with their beautiful display of firearms. Admission is free but if you want to take pictures of the guns, you must be a member of the NRA.

Stupid idea!

Train and arm some of the teachers in each school, and that will immediately stop all school shootings, IMHO.

For years, I’ve been amazed at this idiotic quadrennial fascination with the beauty contest known as the (cue the trumpet fanfare) “PRESIDENTIAL RACE.” Our inattention and/or apparent desire for a king or a strong man dictatorship and/or the increasing numbers of un or ill-educated denizens of the U.S. who feel incapable of lifting themselves out of their own miserable lives has allowed our system to morph and descend into the present quasi-monarchy from its original foundations as a representative REPUBLIC.

People, the most important thing we can remember about all of this is that the Founders constructed the system to put – AND KEEP — the KEYS TO THE FEDERAL CASH REGISTER IN CONGRESS and the current Gang of 535 could bring this out-of-control government spending and the steady usurpation of our freedoms to a screeching halt tomorrow at noon — IF THEY WANTED TO. Attila the Hun could occupy the White House and without the dough to hire the bureaucrats, buy the desks and computers, etc., etc. ad nauseum, Mr. Hun would be hamstrung. (See Article 1, Section 7 of the now largely moribund Constitution for details.)

Capitol Hill is infested with elected and unelected folks who care more about their net worth & the next election than they do the next generation. To enhance their chances to retain the best and cushiest job most of them have ever held, they have foolishly, dangerously and voluntarily shipped most of their former Constitutional powers west to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, thereby relieving themselves of the often dirty and dangerous (to reelection!) business of actually making the hard choices that attend the responsibilities with which the Founders charged them.

Maybe when they're spending it. When they IRS thinks you owe them fifteen cents, they're all over it.

After the Newtown shooting, the suggestion that schools have armed guards was met with hooting, hollering, and general derision by the left. This was reported as if it was the most sensible thing in the world and who could disagree.
