Neighbors delay charity home for injured double-Bronze Star Afghanistan vet

He may have served two tours in Afghanistan protecting the freedom of his nation, but double-Bronze Star veteran David Wood has returned home only to battle ungrateful NIMBYS.

Gifted a charitable home through the efforts of his local congressman, Aaron Schock for his wartime efforts, Wood, who has lost the hearing in one ear was told that the property plans for his family's house were opposed by his potential neighbors.

Indeed, an unidentified cabal of neighbors in the Peoria suburb of Morton, Illinois, has clubbed together to oppose his wooden home saying quite clearly, not in my backyard.

The father of three, aged between eight-years and two-months is shocked, especially because the signatories of the petition have not come forward publicly.

'We were taken aback,' said 28-year-old Wood. 'At first, my wife and I were really hurt. We just felt they really don’t know us as a family.'

Wood, who still serves in the National Guard, currently works as full time as a warehouse manager and struggled to find a home for his wife, Julie and young family when he returned from his last tour.

They want the place to be brick, or at least brick faced to fit the neighborhood. There are covenents. I don’t see a problem with this.

From the article:

“One caller backing the petition said that there was a ‘covenant’ in the neighborhood, requiring all homes to be built of brick.

“However, an investigation by Phil Luciano of the Peoria Journal Star found no such legal agreement in any local or county records.”

Same here. The neighbor claims they have covenants that say they must be brick, yet no one can find any official record. Just using it as a excuse to try to keep someone they don’t want out IMHO.

Perhaps it is an informal promise by the neighborhood to preserve property values. Perhaps the neighborhood would like to chip in to brick face the guy’s house.

Dear Chickensoup,

If they don't have legally-binding covenants, they should shove it where the sun doesn't shine.

If his house plans are in harmony with local law, he has every right to build what he wants.

If I were this fellow, and at this point, they offered to pay for the brick exterior, I'd tell ‘em to drop dead, it's a little late for that, after trying to force out a decorated veteran. Let them learn to live with my nice, wooden house.

Besides, if the photos that accompany the article truly represent the homes in the neighborhood, then not only are these alleged “neighbors” evil, but they have no taste, as well.

The original plans called for it to be built out of straw.

There properties have already lost half their value, what’s a little more, as long as it isn’t my property dropping.

Were I a thankful vet, I wouldn’t want to drag down the neighborhood values either - can’t people just get together ahead of time and work together?

I’d rather live next to this beautiful wood housed family than any of the brick house azzholes protesting him.

We bought a place next to a gravel pit. When they need gravel, they fire up the plant a few times a year. It is way down in a deep hole and doesn’t make enough noise to worry about. You can’t even see it unless you stand on the edge of the pit. The pit has been there 50 years, the homes are all under 25 years old. Once a neighbor brought around a petition to get the pit shut down. I told him in no uncertain terms what I thought of that. We all knew it was there when we moved in.
