SAN ANTONIO -- With an estimated 63 percent Latino population in San Antonio, a key to the Affordable Care Act here is the education of the city's Spanish speakers. And one local group is dedicated to that objective.
The Texas Organization Project, a grassroots group hit the streets Monday evening to make sure there are no language barriers when it comes to health insurance exchanges when the sun rises.
"En este momento tu tiene el seguro medico," asked a bilingual member of the Texas Organization Project.
It was an unexpected encounter Monday that could make all the difference to the health care of 78 year-old Emelia Rodriguez. At this Communicare clinic, a nonprofit health center on Barclay, Laquita Gracia explained to Rodriguez how she can enroll and purchase coverage in the morning, in the new online health insurance marketplace.
Rodriguez learned that even though she has Medicare, it doesn't cover all her health needs. Now she plans to buy supplemental insurance coverage on Tuesday for her and her husband.
She also hopes to enroll her 26-year-old grandson who lives with her and does not have benefits. The total she learned that she could pay to cover all three of them was an estimated $156 a month.
Meantime, other Spanish speakers who were approached got the extra confidence they needed that their existing plans were squared away, like one retiree who learned he does not need to enroll.
Starting in November, employers may use the same websites and phone number to purchase insurance for their employees.
Individuals and families can access the marketplace by visiting healthcare.gov or cuidadodesalud.gov or by calling 1-800-318-2596.
Keep in mind enrollment opens up on Oct. 1 and lasts through March.
As for all those Texans with incomes below the federal poverty level who are not eligible for financial assistance under the program. They can call 2-1-1 to learn about other health care resources in the community.
How do you say DemocRAT in Spanish? Burro. Yeah that’s it. Write burro next to party affiliation.
How about, you don’t speak Engrish, no service...
Are they telling them there is no healthcare in Obamacare?
“Hispanics” need to learn to flip the Bird in the general direction of 0bama and Mecca.
Anyone who has to be informed in Spanish is not integrated with the USA and is looking for the word GRATIS at your expense.
Shame on them and politicians for allowing this.
They have Obamacare in Mexico, who knew?
Local business owners are the worst offenders and enablers.
habla it’s el freeo comrade.
True, fine the owners and have a way of checking the phony documentation.
Much closer to truth in advertising there. Communist-care is better than "Affordable Care Act."
Oh no. Where are they going to get their money?
Verizon, att, tj maxx, Walmart, press one if you want to speak
Lines of Hispanics at the checkout at la Madeleine and Ross. Forget the grocery stores.
I got screamed at by a Costco manager for complaining that my line was stopped for everyone in the store to scramble for a man whose card didnt work. His wife snuck up behind me and put all of her stuff in front of me afte I committed to the line
He never paid a dime
He, the rest if the clerks, the manager no one looked at me long enough to so much as kick me in the shins
Typical and common.
You think Costco cares?
Press one for English yes what’s your complaint?
Thank the good Lord my kids were not there to see war veterans get treated like this. It’s bad enough for them that every standardized test they take they have to say what race they ae because Hispanics are more equal and get the scholarship money
Texas is turning. And Texas business owners are extremely disappointing and the local fellow customers have the guts of Boehner when it comes to helping most are looking at their navels or scrambling to speak mexican
And then my local tv station took the time to carefully explain to young adults about how to enroll in the new system. How many do they think are going to enroll? Why should they enroll when they get apply when they first have a medical problem without being penalized. They'll simply wait until they have a problem and then enroll.
It's the same way many get car insurance. They buy a month's worth when they need to register the car (if they don't just have someone print up a convincing card), and then never pay anything else until they have to.
In California the number born into welfare is near 90%. (Mostly illegals/so called residents)
It is a major problem for sure and those getting 200% increases in health care coverage rates are seeing their money go out to enable illegals to make it for free, which is IMO a crime.
If I were you I would scream about it as well.
When I see large families in CA (most always Hispanic) and my kid is playing near by I look at them and comment how they must be rich to afford their large family since we can’t afford to pay for more than the one we have.
We are financing large poor and uneducated families and the rest who are not literally rich are screwed.
