The Right Gets Its ’60s (Now we're the radical hippies, according to Keller)
The New York Times ^ | September 29, 2013 | Bill Keller

“Something’s happening here.
What it is ain’t exactly clear.”
— Stephen Stills, 1966

The right-wing campaign to sabotage the Affordable Care Act has driven a lot of normally temperate people past the edge of exasperation. Pundits have described the crusade as crazy, stupid, arrogant, dishonest, cynical, ridiculous and politically suicidal. And that’s not just liberals talking. Jennifer Rubin, who blogs from the right for The Washington Post, says of the defunding obsessives, they “have absolutely no idea what they are doing.” Fox News seems perplexed, and eyes are rolling at The Weekly Standard. Big Business is appalled. Elders of the Republican right, like Karl Rove, are harrumphing their disapproval.

And yet the zealots press on, threatening to hold the rest of the government hostage to kill a health care reform that (a) is the law and (b) shows every sign of being a good thing for the country.

What’s happening here ain’t exactly clear. But I have a notion: The Republicans are finally having their ’60s. Half a century after the American left experienced its days of rage, its repudiation of the political establishment, conservatives are having their own political catharsis. Ted Cruz is their spotlight-seeking Abbie Hoffman. (The Texas senator’s faux filibuster last week reminded me of Hoffman’s vow to “levitate” the Pentagon using psychic energy.) The Tea Party is their manifesto-brandishing Students for a Democratic Society. Threatening to blow up America’s credit rating is their version of civil disobedience. And Obamacare is their Vietnam....

So, this is what the German Jews felt like in 1936.

If given a choice, the compassionate Liberals walking amongst us would send Conservatives to the Camps.

Of that, I have no doubt.

I’m getting tired of the commie ‘RATS’ “It’s the law of the land” bovine scatology. The government is supposed to defend our borders and prevent our sovereign nation from invasion. HOW’S THAT WORKING OUT?! The defense of America from invasion is also “the law of the land”.

Yes, NYT, everyone expected the Repubs to fold like the folding lawn chairs they are. But a new sheriff is in town: the Conservatives, and we don't fold, we stand tall.

Sorry to disappoint you, NYT (and others on the Left). We, unlike the GOP "leadership", can take your verbal assaults; we can take your crybaby whining when you don't get everything your way, and we will stand up to you and your Zero King. Go suck on that.

Liberalism is a mental disease.

I think the problem with Obama care is that it will work...but only for the ones who do not have to pay for it...it is at it’s core a wealth transfer scheme. The ones getting the subsidies will love it, and the ones left with the tab will hate it. The Democrats only challenge from now on is to adjust the ratio of payers to receivers to keep them in power perpetually, which of course is their real goal. Play around with this calculator
http://kff.org/interactive/subsidy-calculator/
to see the level of subsidies available. Where is this money going to come from?

What “normally temperate people”? Granted, they seem to be somewhat worse, but the democrats have been delusional hysterics as long as I’ve been following politics. I thought it was just part of their schtick.

Unfortunately, the question of whether or not the government should control health care will be wiped out for the vast majority of the public once this goes into effect. The only debate come election time will be which party can lower my health care costs, lower the premiums, lower my co-pay, lower my deductible, or raise my subsidies. Once people get in the habit of getting their health care through the government, it’ll be impossible to campaign on the idea of taking that away.

As I understand it, the Republicans now aren’t even trying to stop the exchanges or subsidies from going into effect, but only trying to stop the mandate (which by taking away a revenue stream will probably accomplish nothing but adding to the debt). That won’t accomplish anything. Taking away the mandate for a year turns the bill into all carrot and no stick. The public will like it even more, since it’ll be all free bennies with no penalty or tax. So the current bill from the House seems like it’ll only help make Obamacare more popular in the short-term.

If you are in your 40’s and 50’s the rates are higher and if you make more than 65K you will get no subsidies and your insurance plan will be 13,500.00 a year. If you make over
500K your policy will be 13,500.00. this obamacare is aimed at taking the money from middle class people and also middle age people. My husband and I are 46 and 55 and we are going to only be able to afford the penalty because our premium would be $1100.00 per month and we are both healthy.
This is bad.

The only ones who will like this are the ones who get stuff for free now. I am not going to like it, my kids are not going to like it but we will not be getting anything for free and as a matter of fact we will have zero disposable dollars to spend on other things because of this piece of crap legislation.
The people who like this and the politicians who shoved this down our throats can drop dead for all I care and that goes for the traitor John Roberts may he have a special place in hell. This is how I feel about it.

I assume you mean 50K? So did you run your case through the calculator?

My mother voted for Obama twice and hates Republicans because she wants FREE healthcare. She is well over 65 so I don't see any "plan" for her on the site. I guess she'll keep Medicare, except with even more folks in the waiting room, and possibly higher premiums on her supplement plan.

Does Obamacare bend the cost curve, or the electoral curve?

Sorry, this guy has it all wrong. The problem is the hippies of the 60’s (which I remember well) are now running the government. Our Pres and AG are both 60’s radicals...we’ve got the pictures! Bill Ayers is now running “education” instead of blowing up buildings. This is what happened when the hippies “grew up”...they were bad then, put them in suits and give them the reins of government and it will all end up where “hippydome” did...a Charles Manson finale. And it is coming.

I love Keller's "reasoning": "Obamacare shows very good signs of being good for the country." At this point you just put your head in your hands or start banging it against the nearest table. When haven't liberals thought more government power into average citizen's lives was a good thing? I guess reasoned arguments are simply beyond Keller's mental abilities.

Hey Keller, if I think shooting puppies (because dogs get rabies, but if there are no dogs, they can't transmit rabies) is a good thing, does that make it a good thing? I might have to go beyond my own personal opinion and present legitimate arguments as to why I believe a government socialist-style takeover of the health care industry is a good thing. Bah!

Actually this is a plan to remove assets from the middle class. Because they can raise the rates as much as they like, you will finally be booted into the state Medicaid category, and if you are ill and have large healthcare payments your assets will be seized by the state and you will lose everything.
