Halperin: Obama's Shutdown Strategy Banks On The Press Blaming Republicans Like They Did In the '90s
Newsbusters ^ | 9/30/2013 | Mark Finkelstein

Posted on 10/01/2013 2:21:57 AM PDT by markomalley

The list of things on which Barack Obama has been wrong goes on to the crack of doom.  But there's one thing on which the President is surely right. In devising his strategy for dealing with the shutdown, the prez can count on the MSM to blame Republicans.

Mark Halperin bared the president's calculus on today's Morning Joe, saying the Obama admin has little incentive to negotiate because it believes a "sympathetic" press will blame Republicans like they did in the 1990s, accusing them of being "obstructionist."  View the video after the jump.

Halperin offered what amounted to an indictment of MSM bias.  But no one on the panel made a peep. They apparently just took it as a given that is neither controversial nor objectionable.

Watch Halperin let the cat out of the bag.

WILLIE GEIST: Mark, at this point then, what is President Obama's incentive to negotiate? Because if he sits there, the law that he championed and the law that he got passed and the law that was upheld by the Supreme Court will go into effect. If he doesn't -- if he doesn't give anything up on this he gets what he wants. Why does he negotiate with Republicans?

MARK HALPERIN: Here what's the White House and to some extent the Hill is going to monitor. One is how the press covers the shutdown and does it just go back into the '90s mode of saying obstructionist Republicans are causing a shutdown and people, real people are hurting? And the White House is assuming that's going to happen. Then they're going to watch the polls and see whether it's not just partisan. Whether by the end of the week there are surveys that show public/private, that people are blaming Republicans and that that's going to put pressure on Boehner to come to the floor and either force his -- some members of his own conference beyond the handful who will never be with him on this to have a compromise. So they don't have to capitulate on the floor. They don't let Nancy Pelosi dictate what gets passed. So the White House does not have much incentive. Because they think--they think--those trends are going to go in their direction by the end of the week or early next week at the latest because again, the press is largely sympathetic to their arguments on this that it's the House Republicans' fault.

Radio host HUGH HEWITT: “And so everyone that you work with, or 95 percent of people you work with, are old liberals.”

ABC News Political Director MARK HALPERIN: “I don’t know if it’s 95 percent, and unfortunately, they’re not all old. There are a lot of young liberals here, too. But it certainly, there are enough in the old media, not just in ABC, but in old media generally, that it tilts the coverage quite frequently, in many issues, in a liberal direction, which is completely improper....It’s an endemic problem. And again, it’s the reason why for 40 years, conservatives have rightly felt that we did not give them a fair shake.”

— Exchange on The Hugh Hewitt Show, October 30, 2006.

Yep, the DemocRats strategy is to just smear Republicans and call them nasty names, and to get the LSM to cover it.

It's funny how the DemocRats demand civility, but then show none of it themselves.

Meanwhile, Boehner and company are still trying to be Mr. Nice guy when they should be shoveling it right back at the Rats.

Rush said again yesterday that the number of Republican voters who sat out the 2012 election was 4 million. Probably one main reason for them doing that is that they see the Republicans rolling over and caving on every issue. The media might be out there blaming the Republicans for the shut-down, but what do the voters see? Could it be that the voters would see the Republicans as having finally grown a spine and standing up for what is right, regardless of media nattering nabobs?

Republicans should *never* consider what the media will say; the media will always criticize them. They should always stand up and do the right thing—it is what the voters want.

Ben Franklin believed the press should be fair to truth and error, for if truth is given fair press against error, the former wins out over the latter everytime, today’s media
protects error by not giving fair press to both sides.

He felt it wise to present both sides of an issue as long as someone paid him to print it. He took no side as either’s money was good.

These Obama shackled media groupies make many of us want to puke.

Economic boycotts may help?

Thank God above for talk radio and Sara Palin.

Notso much this time. The blogoshere didn’t really exist in 1995. The media had a much tighter stranglehold on information that it does now.

And let’s also remember that the House districts are so gerrymandered that a member could get caught in bed with a dead girl, a live boy, and a mule named Bob and would still win the general election. It’s primaries that cost the their jobs.

They are trying to villainize the Tea Party that is on the rise again after the illegal 0bama/IRS activities against it. Otherwise dhimmicrat turnout in the ‘14 midterms will be significantly down (the DNC is almost broke already from lack of donations).

“What’s in it for them? Is it just a giant MSM circle jerk or what is it?”

The “progressives” have been actively taking over the media since at least the 1950’s if not before. They select “progressives” in their hiring and those who do not have the correct politics never get promoted, get fired, and/or are ostracized.

They view government power as the supreme good and are perfectly willing to give up profits “for the cause”.

What is in it for them is the belief in an agenda greater than themselves. They see government power as god on earth.

One of my friends got a journalism degree about 1974, then he worked his way up into a major market. Ten years later, he finally quit in disgust. He said: “If I do a story on Republican corruption, it is front page news. If I do one on Democrat corruption, it gets spiked.”

Occasionally, a rare “progressive” will be converted to conservatism, or at least a critique of “progressivism” after attaining enough prominence that they cannot easily be fired. They are then villified and attacked. That is what has happened with John Stossel, Mike Royko, and David Horowitz.

I like the idea of the House Repubs offering mini-CR's on individual items to keep them funded (VA, etc.). Offer one a day or every other day to keep the pressure on the Senate Dems and ol' dingy Harry.

It's also great fodder for the media when Harry has them voted down, and the House Repubs stand before cameras talking about another attempt to keep the government running shot down by Harry and the Dems (not a musical group).
