SANTA CRUZ -- Chuck Griffen, a commercial real estate agent in Aptos, said he was stunned to hear how much his health insurance would cost next year.
He is looking at paying $1,150 a month, $13,800 a year, for a no-frills "bronze" plan with out-of-pocket expenses of $12,000 covering himself, his wife and his son, a student at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
"Half my income could go toward health care," he said. "Anyone making over $60,000 is screwed. You're penalizing middle-class people. I think there will be a huge outrage."
Twice since the Affordable Care Act became law, Griffen changed his health insurance to keep it affordable.
Eighteen months ago, he paid $512 a month for a HealthNet policy with prescription coverage, two office visits and a $6,000 deductible for himself, his wife, his son and his daughter.
When HealthNet's price jumped to $630 a month, Griffen switched to Blue Shield, raised the deductible to $9,600, and his daughter, who got a job after college graduation, left the policy, bringing his cost back to $512 a month. That policy will no longer be available as of Jan. 1.

Beeber stuned everywhere!
Previous federal programs used to take small amounts of money from the few to benefit the many. Obamacare takes large amounts of money from the many to benefit the few. If the GOP draws a sharp line between itself and Obamacare, I see large electoral gains in both 2014 and 2016.
What people keep losing sight of is that this has never never never been about healthcare. Anything but.
RATS are now screwed tighter than an oil rig deck, and they are going down. My heart is light!
Sen. Cruz mentioned it over and over again during his 22 hour speech.
This is just a stop on the route to Universal Health Care. By the time obama care takes full effect people will be begging for UHC.
I think there will be a lot like this post from a lib site.
“Looks like based on my income I get medicare which is free other than 4 dollar co-pays for drugs and 50 co-pays for hospital. For the first time in my life i have health insurance starting Jan 1st. Thank you Obama”
You are right, of course, COMMIECARE is simply a stage in the transformation of the U.S., from free markets to socialism.
The goal of Ozombie Care is to destroy the current system and drive insurance companies out of the HC market. Then the Ozombies can show up like a White Knight -so to speak - with UHC!
He has said so in the past:
Beautiful part is being from Santa Cruz he probably voted for Obama twice....
I was talking to another fellow conservative today & he thinks GOP should’ve just let Obummercare collapse on its own. I think the timing of bringing this issue to the forefront is brilliant. This article is a perfect example. So many people are uninformed about this law & the moochers obviously think going to be free. The media of course keeps trying to prop up this nightmare & at same time trying to throw GOP under bus w/shutdown over Ocare. It’s my opinion that it won’t take long for people to really start hating this thing & in meantime, media will keep crowing about how GOP trying to delay this great, unicorn law.
I could be too optimistic by giving the sheeple too much credit but you never know! Grateful to Cruz, Lee etc...
And even then it’s not about healthcare, it’s about social engineering and redistribution. Just look at it in the big picture of all the other policies this evil administration is implementing, like a database to search out communities lacking the “desired” demographics which are forced to offer low-income housing for them or lose federal funding for roads, etc. Never mind the disparities in crime rates which will be brought to those communities. What it amounts to, is they pay to get raped and murdered.
Obozo gets his racist revenge, which is all he’s about, and his hard left/commoe supporters and backers get their communist America, which they’ve been shooting for for decades. They all get what they’ve wanted, and America is screwed.
Simple wealth transfer is all it is.
It's called "redistribution of wealth". Obama promised that, and he is delivering.
Front page article from the same newspaper ....
Health care law’s rollout feted in Santa Cruz
The nationwide rollout could impact 8,600 Santa Cruz County residents newly eligible for MediCal, as well as anyone who wants to buy private insurance on the state’s health care exchange, Covered California. An estimated 20,000 local residents are eligible for a federal subsidy to do that.
Under the Affordable Care Act, about 1.4 million Californians are eligible for an expanded Medicaid program, which will cover people making up to 133 percent of federal poverty wages. Another 2.6 million Californians are eligible for financial assistance to buy their own insurance.
The county recently hired 24 new eligibility workers to enroll people in Medi-Cal. It also was a $500,000 grant to do regional outreach about the Affordable Care Act, which it is using to fund 91 coordinators throughout a number of nonprofits in Santa Cruz, San Benito and Monterey counties.
With an estimated 30,000 uninsured county residents, Board of Supervisors Chair Neal Coonerty said he hopes coverage could be extended to as many as possible. While undocumented immigrants are ineligible for federal coverage, the county is using state and local dollars to continue coverage for that population.
and on and on
Illegals will get coverage while working Americans will go broke.
If this is representative of what people are going to be faced with as they are “forced onto Obamacare,” they are soon going to forget about the “shutdown,” pack up their pitchforks and ropes, and head for DC! Bring it on, 2014 will be a sea change in the Congress, including the RINOs.
I can’t believe that California actually agreed to go along with this as if they weren’t going bankrupt fast enough.
That’s never how these things work with government programs. They just expand, tweak, etc, like the IRs and every other program has. They add to the weight of the program no matter how much money they print from thin air. When these programs collapse, it will be because America collapses of its own weight.
Idiots don’t know the difference between Medicare and Medicaid.
So, I’m thinking more of the Medical peeps will enroll but the subsidy crowd will say, hell no!
What then? The subsidy crowd is most likely the young/healthy & middle class..this is the revenue they’re counting on so they’re counting on the fines to fund the Medical crowd?
Everyone is right, Ocare is just a Ponzi scheme to help the few & penalize the many. Hopey change anyone??
You mean *Medicaid*. Medicare is not free.
"Food justice"? Next thing you know, they'll be telling us which of us can and can't eat.
Or who can eat whom-shades of “Soylent Green”.
Dominant theme here is wealth transfer via screwing middle class Americans to “give” health care to to the Obama voters. 0-Care is a Washington DC power grab. Obama and his minions could have provided better health care for his black and minority constituencies without throwing the private insurance system into chaos and rate hikes
But Obama is an African style socialist who thrives on this tumult. He jokes about is while out golfing
Live in Hopey Changey, die in despair.
Surprise, surprise. Anyone with half a brain ... Oh, never mind.
Yet if not for Ted Cruz and Mike Lee, they would have let the law go into effect without so much as a whimper. It's time to put the real leaders of our party in the positions of leadership.
I was going to ask who is paying for this. Then I saw your last line “Illegals will get coverage while working Americans will go broke.” and knew.
Cruz is the Senate mole. He knows what the truth is. God bless him.
It’s a flat-out race...will Americans first get thoroughly addicted to “free” government run “healthcare” or will they first throw the whole stinking mess overboard and beg for the return of the wonderful system we had before? Dems are banking on #1 and intend to use that as the stepping stone to single payer.
He means Mwdicade. I just posted some idiots comment
>> He is looking at paying $1,150 a month
Many of us have been paying these rates+ for years. It’s like a mortgage payment. And like a mortgage payment, you can’t miss it. These rates are not going to go over well to most Americans. Folks will be fearful, lose sleep, and have a lower quality of life. This is going to be Hell; ObamaHell.
I do too. As a result, our health care system as we have known it will be far different in a few years with all these goodies being given away for pennies on the dollar.
I’ll bet a lot of those in Santa Cruz voted for the Comrade.
I think within 6 mo.
the economy will die.
They probably blame Republicans.
Seems to me that anyone who ends up with Medicaid would have anyway.
Health insurance and subsequently delivery of health care had to be ruined for everyone just so the people who were already eligible for Medicaid could still be eligible for Medicaid? Just so those getting crappy insurance can be manipulated to demand Single Payer, which is Medicaid for everyone? All of which is about the same as what Walmart offered and that the progs derided? Socialism really is about equality of misery.
I hope I run into the woman who huffily told me a few years ago that she loved zer0care because “My 22-year-old daughter doesn’t have insurance and now she can be on mine.”
Yeah, Mom, she can. At adult premiums added to yours and all at a massive increase. But wait! Your grandbaby can’t be included in their parents’ policy because there are no family plans!
Idiots is accurate.
Under PPACA the eligibility requirements for Medicaid were relaxed, meaning more people will be eligible for the program than were before. So it won’t be the same people eligible for Medicaid now, it will be more people, people who formerly weren’t eligible.
Also, under the new Medicaid eligibility rules there is no asset test. So you can own property (even several homes, cars, boats, etc.) and still be eligible. As long as your INCOME is within 133% of the poverty limit, you are now eligible, whereas before, I think you could only have assets worth about $3,000 in total. Plus you had to be disabled and/or have young children and very poor. It was destitute-care.
Now, people with assets but not very much income can be eligible for Medicaid. So, if you have your house(s) paid off, your car paid off, etc. but you have a low enough income, you can be eligible. You don’t have to be disabled, you don’t have to have young children. You really don’t have to be poor. You can be quite wealthy (in assets) and you are eligible.
Unless you live in a State which refused to expand Medicaid (relax eligibility rules), which the Supreme Court said States can do, without penalty from the Federal government.
People with assets (but not very high income) would be better off moving to a State that relaxed Medicaid eligibility and get free healthcare.
Of course, the quality of that medical care is suspect. We will see if doctors, hospitals etc will accept new Medicaid patients. The reimbursement rates are low, so you would be in the lower caste among those seeking care.
Thanx. Good information.
I'm sure a lot did. I have family and friends in Santa Cruz and half my family voted for Obama but most of my friends did not. I'm just waiting for my family members who voted for Obama to start complaining about the costs of the Obamacare tax.
