Man found with cache of guns, explosives

FAIRFIELD -- Those who have dealt with Joseph C. Callahan describe him as "a nice guy," "a community leader" and "someone always willing to help with business ideas or plans."

They say he's a chemist, a sportsman and a pilot.

And they say he isn't "a disgruntled employee," "a terrorist" or "anybody to worry about."

But on Wednesday, hundreds of guns, thousands of rounds of ammunition and dozens of barrels of explosive chemicals were taken from Callahan's million-dollar home at 1625 Bronson Road in Fairfield's exclusive Greenfield Hill neighborhood.

In an instant, Callahan changed from a respected 69-year-old businessman who created his own chemical company after spending years at Remington Arms Co. to a person of interest to local, state and federal authorities, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

"This investigation is being led by the Fairfield police," said Debra Seifert, an ATF agent and spokeswoman. "We are participating by offering our expertise in the areas of explosives and firearms."

Seifert said ATF sent a K-9 team and a certified explosives expert to the house.

Hmmm...

At that time, Callahan appeared disoriented and was hospitalized, where he remained Wednesday

Big deal. He hadn’t hurt anyone. If he is not a Muslim he was probably not planning anything

From Remington?

Sounds like someone with an interest in ammo design. Wonder what kind of stuff Elmer Keith kept at home.
Of course, with the nazis taking over, Keith would probably be in trouble today.

The guy is a millionaire and with any luck his lawyer will get him off. They said they found “bombs” but there is a difference between a “bomb” and a barrel of powder used for making ammo, and a “bomb”.

An interesting piece of rhetoric. Recall that "person of interest" was put into place after Richard Jewell was named a suspect in the Atlanta bombing, and sued. I.e. it is nothing but a euphemism. Here we see that it's euphemic power is slight, as the stigma of the appellation is deemed to have wiped out a lifelong reputation of virtue.

[Fairfield Police Chief Gary MacNamara said investigators have yet to determine why the explosive devices were made. However, he added, “Anybody who makes bombs has some sort of nefarious reason.”]

The “bombs” could be prototypes for explosive devices used in commercial or military demolition.

Which would mean…. Anyone with guns, ammo, and reloading supplies..... is a risk…..

dozens of barrels of explosive chemicals

Black powder rifles in his collection? Cache seems to be a term of justification to ransack
and steal. We've seen 500-rounds of .22LR and three guns called a Cache by the gun
hating Media who are covering the Fifes' butts on bogus confiscations.

I doubt we'll learn the truth or get any follow up on this by the Media.

My understanding of current BATF tyranny is that if you have the ability to build a bomb, you are guilty.

Black powder, piece of pipe, a Dremel mototool, a registered Republican. Presto, you are a terrorist.

Why do I feel we are inches from a Great Killing?

In a state like Connecticut, it is very likely many of the guns he had were illegal. Regardless, like you say, whether they were legal or not, they would still have confiscated them and trumped up some other charge.

From the link…
“Specialize in nitration reactions also oxidation/reduction reactions”

Hence the “explosive chemicals”

So, yes, he would probably have chemicals they may classify as “potentially explosive”. That’s his freaking job!

From what I gather from the article the guy built model rockets. Model rockets take CHEMICALS in the propellant to burn.

So what if he had thousands of rounds of ammo. Did he misuse them? Was he plotting to misuse them? No evidence in the article points toward this?

So what if he had hundreds of firearms. Did he murders someone or attempt to murder?

Another over reach of black booted thugs and media to write anything to desparge gun ownership.

It will cost this legal Citizen hundreds of thousands of dollars to clear his name and get his property back. He may never walk in the community again without this cloud hanging over him.

Will the black booted thugs pay for their miss deeds? Of course not. They will be commended for their miss deeds and more than likely promoted.

Pure male bovine scat......

The BATF is one of the most incompetent, corrupt, dishonest federal agencies in existence. It is full of CIA and FBI rejects who have something to prove. A target like Mr. Callahan gives them a big boner cause now they can prove how important they are. Is it possible Mr. Callahan was planning something nefarious? Yes. But do I believe a word out of the BATF’s mouth? NEVER. I have never seen a group that takes more joy in stomping on people’s necks than those guys. Just assume they are lying and you will be right 80% of the time.

“The series of events at the Callahan home began Tuesday when an out-of-state resident called Fairfield police asking them to check on Callahan.”

“police contacted Callahan and everything seemed fine. However, Callahan called back later to report a possible burglary. When officers arrived, they found no signs of a break-in but saw barrels of chemicals, which led to further investigation.”

“Callahan is expected to be charged with the manufacture of explosive devices in the coming days”
