Record gun sales soar even higher in Maryland

Maryland gun dealers have sold more firearms in the first nine months of this year than in all of 2011 and 2012 combined, the state police said Wednesday.

Buyers have applied to purchase 117,009 guns this year as lawmakers debated and enacted some of the toughest new gun laws in the country. More than 15,000 gun purchase applications were sent to the state police in the 10 days before Maryland's ban on assault rifle sales and a new handgun licensing requirement took effect Tuesday.

"Maryland is armed to the teeth," said Del. Luiz Simmons, a Montgomery County Democrat who voted for the law but argued that the assault rifle ban was not strong enough. "We caused this rush, this stampede really, to purchase guns."

State police could not say how many of the firearms purchased this year were handguns or assault rifles, but they have a backlog of more than 60,000 background checks to make sure the buyers are allowed to own those guns.

Good for Maryland!

It’s just too bad that the people of Maryland have to get police permission to buy a tool.

1,000 per day sounds pretty normal for some free and gun loving states like PA, TX, FL, etc.

Most any urban black youth is ready, willing and able to play the “knockout game” on you or “white girl bleed a lot”, suddenly a silly law like a gun ban seems less frightful.

Why no report on shotgun sales.

Absolutely correct. Making it even tougher to own guns will not decrease sales, however, Mr. Simmons. The citizens of the no longer free state of MD are arming to defend themselves against you and the gang of thugs who have stolen the state.

While it is a very good thing that thousands of the fine folks in MD are adding to their stock of firearms, I still chafe every time I read “Buyers have applied to purchase...”. That simple statement is the very reason the rest of us should be buying more arms and ammo.

Of course, regulation at the STATE level is an issue for the residents of that state, but still...

Are .22 supplies getting restocked yet? I haven’t been to a gun store since the shortage.

If you can’t get ammo, what does it matter.

Same here - checked this morning and they have a lot more ammo than they've been displaying, but much of the popular stuff is still absent.

Our walmart has maybe two boxes of some calibers I’ve never heard of, been that way for months. Some ammo is trickling in to a couple of local gun shops, but it is 2x to 3x what it used to cost. I’m currently shooting just enough for bare proficiency.
