High School Student Ordered To Remove NRA T-Shirt Because It Promotes Gun Violence
CBS Los Angeles ^ | October 2, 2013

Posted on 10/03/2013 7:25:24 AM PDT by billorites

A student at a high school in Anaheim Hills said administrators ordered her to change out of a T-shirt that promoted the National Rifle Association.

Sophomore Haley Bullwinkle said when she wore her NRA shirt to Canyon High School last month, she landed in the principal’s office for violating the school’s dress code that forbids offensive, violent or divisive clothing.

“They were treating me like I was a criminal,” she said. “I was not allowed to wear that at school because it promoted gun violence.”

The shirt, which was a gift from Bullwinkle’s father when he became a card-carrying member of the NRA, features a buck, an American flag and a hunter’s silhouette. It also has the words “National Rifle Association of America: Protecting America’s Traditions Since 1871” written in the center.

Bullwinkle’s father said he emailed the school’s principal to find out why his daughter had to change her shirt.

Principal Kimberly Fricker responded in an email, which said, in part, “The shirt had a gun on it, which is not allowed by school police. It’s protocol to have students change when they’re in violation of the dress code.”

The girl’s father, who has retained an attorney, now wants to know how the school defines violence. He said the drill team is allowed to twirl fake rifles and the mascot is a Comanche.

“I think that if you consider the hunter, the image of the hunter to be offensive, certainly there are groups that would consider the Comanche Indian chief to be offensive,” he said.

CBS2′s Stacey Butler was unable to reach Fricker for comment.

There’s not just zero tolerance for guns in schools. There is zero tolerance for the IDEA of guns in schools.

In our overpriced government school district, they basically allow a double standard based on race. If you were white the dress code was enforced if you were black do then no dress code enforcement. These people are evil

"There’s not just zero tolerance for guns in schools. There is zero tolerance for the IDEA of guns in schools."

Not all of the time. In good old Central Minnesota - just as recently as 2008, my senior year of high school - I was actually allowed by the school principal to bring a rifle into my speech class in order to give an instructional speech on how to properly clean and maintain it. I had to leave the actual bolt in his office until the end of the day, but that was the only restriction he gave me. There ARE conservative teachers out there...they're the ones that give you the history and the facts the way it really happened.

. . . offensive, violent or divisive clothing.

Wonder how many "students" were wearing Che t-shirts.

I agree the attacks are one sided and pro leftist.

The classic t shirt promoting the serial murderer Che Guevara would most likely be more than tolerated.

I Believe the solution is uniforms. As a former parochial school student there was never a clothing issue. Of course if one bites his grill cheese sandwich into he shape of a gun the uniform would not help that.

I would be more than happy to have my kids attend school where other kids did not have a Che or 99% shirt on.

Definitely in this case. It is not everywhere though. My daughter has worn her NRA shirt to middle school without incident and I live in a liberal sinkhole.

We shouldn’t let these stories demoralize us, but rather stir us up to fight for our rights and our children’s rights.

Government schools are in the brain-washing business.

Parents: Protect your children. Get them out of government schools and place them in private schools or homeschool them.

The thing missing here is the monolithic irony of a school chief executive having zero understanding of the Constitution of the United States, and any of the case law around the 1st Amendment.

To me, its grounds for firing. My wife works in a school where one of the vice principals cannot communicate in written English.

Misspellings, bad grammar, bad punctuation. Employed since there since 1990.

I think its time the country went Galt. My heart goes out to the poor, and to people who work their butts off and have little to show for it.

I have no tolerance for people that have options, yet opt for a parasitic existence.

Why is it against the school rules to wear a t-shirt with a picture of a gun? Why can a t-shirt do?

If there is Anything the NRA promotes, it is gun SAFETY!

And that is a good point about the drill team, or color guard. Never thought about that. Nor did the school!

First Amendment? We don’t need no steenkin’ first amendment! Frickin’ sad situation that kids today are being subjected to these didiots. And too many panty wasted parents aren’t much better. Pretty soon the word “gun” will be as offensive to them as the “N” word (if it’s not already). How sad for this once great nation. Probably okay to wear j-z shirt or “black power fist”, or che queervera shirts though. Maybe even some la raza shirts would be okay too. Planned parenthood shirts? Commie code pinko shirts?
