The first major survey of American Jews in more than 10 years finds a significant rise in those who are not religious, marry outside the faith and are not raising their children Jewish resulting in rapid assimilation that is sweeping through every branch of Judaism except the Orthodox.
The intermarriage rate, a bellwether statistic, has reached a high of 58 percent for all Jews, and 71 percent for non-Orthodox Jews a huge change from before 1970 when only 17 percent of Jews married outside the faith. Two-thirds of Jews do not belong to a synagogue, one-fourth do not believe in God and one-third had a Christmas tree in their home last year.
Its a very grim portrait of the health of the American Jewish population in terms of their Jewish identification, said Jack Wertheimer, a professor of American Jewish history at the Jewish Theological Seminary, in New York.
The survey, by the Pew Research Centers Religion & Public Life Project, found that despite the declines in religious identity and participation, American Jews say they are proud to be Jewish and have a strong sense of belonging to the Jewish people.
While 69 percent say they feel an emotional attachment to Israel, and 40 percent believe that the land that is now Israel was given to the Jewish people by God, only 17 percent think that the continued building of settlements in the West Bank is helpful to Israels security.
Jews make up 2.2 percent of the American population, a percentage that has held steady for the past two decades. The survey estimates there are 5.3 million Jewish adults as well as 1.3 million children being raised at least partly Jewish.

Oy Vey.....they’re talking about my HUSBAND!!
Laurie Goodstein needn't worry about the loss of Jewish identity. Because the Orthodox are having all the children, and in a couple of decades, they'll be the only Jews. But she might be worried that most of them won't be voting Democrat.
When I was a kid, my dad said to me if the Arabs left the Jews alone, within 3 generations they would wipe themselves out because of intermarriage.
It was the Arabs intention of killing the Jews that kept Judaism alive and well.
And the Orthodox have a fertility rate of about 6 kids per family, compared to less than 2 for the others.
They vote Dumocrap, in general. No matter how many times we preach to them about Jerusalem etc. and the GOP stand, they don’t give a sh*t. Just like mexicans, their foreheads have already been stamped with the jackass symbol.
They must be politicians.
Practically every Jewish person accredited with high achievement in science, technology, politics or the media also happen to be atheists.
It’s not really surprising that they’d have any qualms against intermarrying with nominal Christians here or others elsewhere. It’s also why almost all of them vote Democrat.
“Because the Orthodox are having all the children, and in a couple of decades, they’ll be the only Jews. But she might be worried that most of them won’t be voting Democrat.”
Don’t count on that; remember Hillary Clinton in New Square (NY)?
“When I was a kid, my dad said to me if the Arabs left the Jews alone, within 3 generations they would wipe themselves out because of intermarriage. It was the Arabs intention of killing the Jews that kept Judaism alive and well.”
I’ve heard the same attributed to the Nazis; it alledgedly restored a sense of purpose to Judaism. Since they’ve been around for 5,000 years, I won’t guess at what keeps them going; they’re still going.
They give up GOD to worship man..
Will all gentiles please find your Jewish friends and give them a huge, “Shabbat Shalom!” It’s one of the best things for a not-yet-religious Jew to hear. Any and every Friday afternoon.
Now if they’d only stop voting democrat.
I think most religions have seen a similar decline in the “identifying” factor. Americans are highly secular and becoming ever moreso. Similarly, intermarriage. If one doesn’t strongly ID as a Jew/Catholic/Presbyterian, etc., what’s the difference between marrying within or outside the faith?
Yeah, but then they'd have the hassle of deciding whether to raise the kids as agnostic Jews or as lapsed Lutherans...
You know, the sad thing though is were this Hitler’s fascist state, his thugs would have tracked down every one of these assimilated Jews in our country for even one drop of Jewish blood, and label them Jewish. It would behoove all assimilated Jews in mixed marriages to remember this little fact and never get too far from their Jewish roots and heritage. And above all, support Israel. We are heading towards a fascist state this very moment in our country, and who knows where it will end up.
This is what the writer calls “assimilation”.... assimilation into what?
“rapid assimilation that is sweeping through every branch of Judaism except the Orthodox. “
ironic, given that the orthodox are also the only branch of judaism that doesn’t subscribe to the democrats’ Culture of Death
this only tells part of the story. My family left our synagogue because it was far too liberal.
I have two children and one chose to remain Jewish. The other is a Noahide... why has he pulled from the faith? Because of the example set by the Jewish people at our synagogue.
A few bad apples can ruin the barrel.
Those intermarriage stats are astounding
I’m gonna venture a guess that Jewish men are to shiksas like black men are to crackerettes
As in hell yes I’ll have some of that
And Jewish women to goyim men are like black sistas to males woods
Not so much into it
The irony of course is the group that doesn’t want the other might benefit most from it
Speaking personally I have nothing but fond memories of my early southern Jewish girlfriend from the late 70s
Naked horseback riding.....stands out....she was fun
She was not stereotypical...a fine gal and her family loved me
And they were not liberals...they were like catholics once removed to me
