Dems move to force Republicans to reopen the government

House Democratic leaders believe they have hit on a new way to potentially force House Republican leaders into allowing a vote on a “clean CR” funding the government without any defunding of Obamacare attached.

At last count, as many as two dozen House Republicans appear prepared to vote for a clean CR. With Democrats included, that means a majority of the House of Representatives would vote right now to reopen the government. But the House GOP leadership won’t allow such a vote.

Dems have hit on a way to use a “discharge petition,” which forces a House vote if a majority of Representatives signs it, to try to force the issue. Previously, it was thought this could not work, because a discharge petition takes 30 legislative days to ripen, so if this were tried with the clean CR that passed the Senate, this couldn’t bear fruit until some time in November.

>> Peter King is rapidly becoming the House’s John McCain. <<

Peter King has been the House's John McCain since at least 1998. Conservatives have just been in denial about it.

Dems say that if they get enough signatures, they’d be able to force a vote by October 14th.

Their constituencies cannot hold out that long.

House Republicans are NOT “keeping the government closed”. Democrats are!!!
Republicans have voted 4 (FOUR!!!!) times on individual bills that fund all necessary parts of government.

Dems are just throwing a tantrum because they can’t have things their way (one big lump bill without Obamacare), if they can’ play like they want they’ll just not approve anything.

The dems know if the Repubs are able to do this this time, that the House has just realized they have the useful power of the purse and could have been using this all alongm but somewhere along the way had given it up. The House might actually start to use it to reign in Big Government. It scares the democrats to death to think the Republicans might have figured this out.

It is the Dems fault, not the Republicans!

Republicans need to be super aggressive in getting that message out. Dems are holding up funding! Say it over and over until someone finally listens!

the Constitution says that the President may convene one or both Houses of Congress.

If you hadn't said that, no one on O'bama's team would know!

I see this story as very good news. There’s no way the Dims would even be thinking about this if they were decisively winning the PR war, like all the media say they are. I think they are the ones feeling the pressure, being willing to end the shutdown with such a maneuver. Highly unlikely it happens though — for the very same reason. If the moderate RINO types think they are at least breaking even holding the line, they have no reason to risk political suicide by signing a Pelosi-led petition.

I hope the Republican house leadership is making sure that it is known that any Republican House member who’s name appears on said petition will become persona-non-grata in the party and lose his or her committee assignments.

Yeah but they'll be lionized on the Sunday talk shows, be hailed as heroes, and get a big smooch from Nancy Pelosi and...oh scratch that last one.

Every republican who agrees with this should be kicked out of the party. Tell the to go ahead and officially join the democrats.

The Speaker can use his power to determine when each bill reaches the floor.

How would the Dems get by this? Make the Boner whine and cry till he agrees to their demands?

Agree completely. I was reacting only to the idea that the GOP would cave on this...they must not cave.
