What Happened to 'Compassionate' Conservatives?
National Journal ^ | October 4, 2013 | By Jill Lawrence

There's an empty space in the Republican Party where compassionate conservatism used to be, and an opportunity for a presidential prospect to step into the breach.

The disappearance of that trademark George W. Bush brand from Washington has never been more apparent. The Republican House has gone from stalling immigration reform and cutting food stamps to precipitating a government shutdown by demanding the repeal of the health law that is the cornerstone of President Obama's legacy. The shutdown is threatening nutrition programs, cancer treatment, salaries, jobs, and much more.

It's one bad hand among several the GOP has dealt itself.

"We're not finished committing suicide here," said Republican strategist John Weaver, a veteran of the McCain and Huntsman campaigns. "We also have the opportunity to kill immigration reform, and the odds are that we will do that, just to make sure we're the angry-white-man party." He says the party may need a George McGovern-sized defeat with a candidate like Ted Cruz before it chooses another path.

Conservatism itself is compassionate, in that it helps everyone aspire to independence and freedom, not dependence and slavery.

“Compassionate Conservative” is redundant.

“Compassionate Liberal” is an oxymoron.

The cornerstone of Obama’s presidency is cracked and sitting in sand.

Obmacare is a disaster, and scribblers like the National Journal licking his rear do not change the facts. Obama owns the shutdown.

Republican strategist John Weaver

His track record sorta sucks for him to be giving advice.

What's compassionate about using the full force and violence of the federal government to take the fruits of the labor from one person and give it to another? Because the government deals in money, power and violence - not affectionate hugs.

said Republican strategist John Weaver, a veteran of the McCain and Huntsman campaigns.

Well, clearly he is an expert strategist with a resume like that. /sarc.

...John Weaver, a veteran of the McCain and Huntsman campaigns...

There's a real winner for you.

As for the "compassionate conservatives", I think they went looking for just one honest, INTELLIGENT journalist in the "media". No luck so far.

"Compassionate Conservativism" got George W. Bush so much slack from the left. They truly loved him as a different kind of Republican.

At least I'm pretty sure that was how it happened in a Trek-like alternate universe. Something else happened here.

One by one I was going to reply, but I see that all of you have said it well. Sadly, I almost envy friends with no children or grandchildren. I have little hope.

The ‘compassionate’ conservatives were bent over the barrel, used, and then abused by the progressives. It’s time for the conservatives to remember how politics work and how the other party will take every advantage they can.

With all the celebrating of coming out of the closet stuff, I’ve been thinking...

The Socialist and Communists in the Democratic party need to come out. Be in the open, give the Democrats back their party. Rinos can then comfortably move over to the Democratic party.

Conservatives, Libertarians, Constitutionalists...several parties.

I think we need to have many, many more parties or none. Too much power is being placed in the hands of too few with this two party system.

With many parties the power would not be so concentrated, people wouldn’t be so quick to vote a party ticket and people of the United States would be more accurately represented.

In my opinion this two party system isn’t working. Maybe I’m not looking at it right or looking to simplistically?
