Disability, USA - Steve Kroft reports on the alarming state of the federal disability program, which has exploded in size in the last six years and could become the first federal benefits program to run out of money. James Jacoby and Michael Karzis are the producers. Watch a preview
Are they waking up, or just using their show to lobby for a bigger SS tax hike? My $$ is on the latter.
Disability has become the new welfare. Plenty of folks whose unemployment benefits are running out are applying for disability.
Disability lawyers are making a killing.
Get a diagnosis of depression or ADHD and a smart laywer and you can get on disability. A monthly check for life.
Who says we don’t have guaranteed lifetime income?
It is when the libs gained control of congress.
My wife’s boss owns and rents about 15 mobile homes. All but 1 or 2 of the renters are on disability. At any given time she is evicting one or more for drugs and nonpayment.
Finally noticed all of the people jumping up and down, shouting, and pointing at the disability explosion?
Some folk on this truly need it. All the deaf, blind quadriplegics should be cared for.
The rest of them are not disabled, just dis willing.
>>lawyers worked night and day to find something that would qualify him as “disabled”.<<
What did they “find”?
I don't know. There's nothing wrong with him that a little growing up wouldn't cure.
Not much of a life is it?
I thank the Good Lord that he directed me down a different path.
Seems half the democrat party is collecting ‘disability’ - and all of Detroit.
Have no fear - dems WILL keep ‘disability’ checks coming... Dems will put old people to death before they let some guy with a bad temper (yeah that qualifies a person for a disability check for life) from having to get a job.
Disability pays more than unemployment. It gives people an excuse not to work and does not have the stigma of welfare. People are gaming the system. Many of these people can work but just don’t want to work. If these able-bodied people were accurately counted the unemployment rate would be much higher than the official number.
A drug addict who doesn't want to work gets rewarded with the equivalent of winning the lottery. Some will collect 'disability' for 50 to 70 years...
In the old days you might have felt obligated to help your son in law in some way - and he would have been forced to make an effort to keep you 'giving'... It's how the system worked since the dawn of time. We 'socialize' the young who aren't naturally responsible.
But today? The money he wants it taken from you by force - and he doesn't have to do any thing to keep the cash flowing except hire a liberal lawyers who will take a cut of the action. He loses. Your daughter loses and you lose. Perverse incentives all around thanks to democrats - and a boatload of unintended consequences...
It's my son-in-law's BROTHER. My daughter and son-in-law are hardworking people who wouldn't dream of exploiting the system...
Just didn't want you to get the wrong idea about my family... :-)
From the clip it almost looks like CBS isn’t playing the fool for liberals. But that’s a little hard to believe, right? The ‘tease’ is probably there to get us to watch 60 Minutes so they can preach to us about how we - as conservatives - need to ‘give’ more and shut the ____ up...
I am shocked by the number of new patients that I see that are on disability and even more shocked by the amount of requests for my medical records by SSI. In the last 5 years the requests have increased 10 fold AND many of these requests are received within two weeks of their appointment so there is little doubt that they are following a script(lawyers,SSI employees...?)
Your son-in-law's brother might have gone to your son-in-law for help under the old system - and he might have given him yard work to do - or 'help' as long as he was looking for a job etc. Maybe a room for a short time... That system - with some exceptions - worked well since the dawn of time. We socialized each other. Families performed that important social function...
Dems have tried to replace the family with 'disability' checks. Years ago they replaced fathers with welfare checks... They want to step in and reinforce a person's right to NOT to be responsible. Dem plans don't work - not for the person in need of help - not for the person who might want to help. Your son-in-law who might love his brother is now out-bid by the power of the 'disability' program. It's sad - for both of them.
The problem with the drug addict is that his parents molly coddle him and have. Parents are also on disability, both of them, and son livdes with them. Abusive, angry, addicted...but the parents are classic enablers. They make excuses for him, they treat him like an infant and in return he threatens to stab them, steals their money, guns and whatever else he can when he needs drug money.
The family is really messed up and I bet it is in no small measure because of the notion that they haven't had to work in years.
I'll bet you're right...
Per my Late Mother, “You help people who can’t help themselves, not people who won’t help themselves”.
My sister-in-law works for a social service. She says the number of cases of whole families with 30 year old sons, all on disability because of “bipolar” disorders or some other such nonsense is appalling.
She can spot a scammer a half mile away but their is nothing she can do about it.
A few years back I knew a woman who’s 30 year old son was an addict. In my oppinion, the worst thing he ever did was he stole two Civil War Pistols that were owned by two of his GGG Grandfathers. One fought for the North, one for the South. His parents forgave him and bailed him out again. Around that time I stopped having anything to do with them.
I wonder where they were when the need for eyeglasses became a “disability”.
I am sure there are numerous people right here on FR that are eligible for Disability for one or more medical conditions but who bite the bullet every day and go to work. The American Disability Act made it unlawful to discriminate against the disabled and demanded that employers bend over backward to accommodate people with disabilities, even to the point of Affirmative Action. Ironic after all that effort that now instead of clamoring for the right to work like everyone else, too many “disabled” people avoid anything that even smells like work.
Every federal program ever implemented has always run out of money.
Subsidized housing, disability income, food stamps, medical coverage, funded transportation, paid caregivers. It goes on and on, therapy, counseling, equipment. on and on.
I tried rentals once and it definitely is not for me. You don’t want to be a landlord unless maybe you are renting condos at the beach or something. You do not want to be in the low end of that market.
“A drug addict who doesn’t want to work gets rewarded with the equivalent of winning the lottery. Some will collect ‘disability’ for 50 to 70 years...”
I keep hearing this but the last time I read the rules on the social security website it clearly said that alcohol or drug addiction was a DISqualifier for disability.
It's the same with Obama phones - the 'written rules' make sense. Those are the rules given to the idiots in the MSM who point to them and ask, 'who could disagree with this?' If you look at the real 'program' handing out phones it has little to do the written rules. Some in the media have been brave enough to look past the lies of Obama phones. The same needs to happen with 'disability'.
The saddest part is there are people who are really disabled - honest people who ARE NOT scamming the system. When the disability system collapses and there aren't any checks going out - the scammers will move on to the next scam. People who really are disabled - and don't have family members - will die. Many of the elderly disabled will die.
If you have doubts run an ad in your local paper for a part time low skill workers - and discover most applicants will tell you they need to be paid in cash because they don't want a record missing up their 'disability'.
If you can get diagnosed with depression as the cause of your drinking, I believe that works.
Recently a doctor told a friend of ours she had to quit working PERIOD. No options. He also told her that she would have to claim some sort of psychiatric condition to get disability, that SS considers that more relevant than being genuinely physically disabled as she now is.
