President Barack Obama’s decision to scrap his Asia trip is a setback for his much-advertised pledge to shift the focus of foreign policy to the Pacific and a boost for China’s attempt to gain influence in the region.

By staying home because of the partial government shutdown, Obama hands new Chinese leader Xi Jinping a chance to fill the void at two Asian summits Obama had planned to attend. It’s the third time since 2010 that Obama has canceled an Asia trip, all because of domestic political crises. …

The situation works for China, which is rapidly modernizing its armed forces and boosting its regional influence. Xi has been visiting Indonesia and Malaysia this week to improve Beijing’s reputation at a time when its aggressive stance on territorial issues has strained ties with some countries in southeast Asia. Washington’s acute political paralysis gives Xi a freer hand to become the big presence in the room. …

As Jay Leno said, instead of doing nothing in Asia he can stay in DC and do nothing.

Actually this is really a big deal.

Like it or not the head of state is the person other leaders of listen to.

As I’ve said before the rest of the world sees the USA as losing the WOT and losing to our enemies generally. At one time we were inaccurately called a paper tiger, today we are accurately called fools

The rest of the world is picking sides..and they are not picking the United States to prevail..China is a much safer bet at this point in time

Can the Republicans pass a partial funding measure to send Barry overseas?

But withhold funding for the return flight...

Did he cancel the whole trip, or just scale it back?

I thought he was still going on that 2-day vacation, er, working trip to Bali?

The POS was only going over there so that he could sign agreements that would ship more American jobs overseas.
Anything the POS does is intended to hurt his enemies, aka productive American citizens.

Why does the clown need to go to Asia anyway? Doesn't he care about the giant CARBON FOOTPRINT that would leave?

Maybe Mr. Techno-genius can do all overseas business via SKYPE from now on. Save the taxpayer some money.

Our manufacturing has gone to China, but it is no longer our manufacturing.

China owns it.

China supplies America. Go in any store. Anywhere.

“Made in China”.

There is a small portion of people who sold our manufacturing to the ChiComs.

Everyone else is getting royally scr*wed.

BRING BACK AMERICAN MANUFACTURING.

Now.
