DAVIDSON Davidson College will host a free panel discussion on Gun Rights, Responsibilities, and Regulations at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 7 in the Lilly Family Gallery of the Chambers Building on campus.
The panel will include Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Rodney Monroe; Davidson Police Chief Jeanne Miller; Capt. The event is sponsored by the colleges Vann Center for Ethics.
The panel will address such questions as, What are the trends in the use of guns in murders and other violent crimes in the U.S.? What is the current status and scope of our Second Amendment rights? What does federal law require regarding background checks prior to gun purchases? What concerns do law-enforcement personnel have about illegally trafficked guns? and Are changes to current gun laws or regulations warranted, either at the state or federal level?
Those planning to attend should note that guns are prohibited on the Davidson College campus.

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.
Just what don't these people understand about the above words?
How about CRIMINAL CONTROL?????
If You are in the area and can make it let's make them answer REAL questions.
Davidson College - Davidson, NC www.davidson.edu/ Davidson College is a highly selective independent liberal arts college for 1920 students located 20 minutes north of Charlotte in Davidson, N.C..
Where is the NRA?
My daughter is Davidson '10 - think I'll email 'em and ask.
Looking at the occupations of the speakers/participants, it looks like the panel is 100% anti-gun. There will probably be “good balance” in the discussions (i.e. “guns be bad, we’uns should get rid of them, and only let police and the military have them).
My Email:
As a Davidson parent, I was curious to know if your gun rights discussion panel is going to have any representation from a firearms/ constitutional rights organization, shooting sports organization, etc. There are many articulate and reasoned firearms rights advocates in North Carolina who could bring useful information to your panel.
I was deeply involved in firearms rights litigation about 20 years ago, and one of the things I learned was that there is a profound lack of factual knowledge on the part of most of the people who sit on these panels. Unfortunately, that includes chiefs of police, because they generally are (1) political appointees, with all that implies; and (2) perhaps surprisingly to you, do not have the in-depth knowledge that your average shooting sports participant has as a matter of course. Most police chiefs view a firearm as simply another tool of the trade, like the radio, and some are openly hostile to civilian possession of firearms. That became quickly obvious in the case we handled.
One of the reasons we sent our daughter to Davidson was the schools tradition of examining all sides of a question fairly and honestly. She found that tradition to still be alive and well, unlike many colleges where dissenting views are suppressed and even punished.
I hope that you will continue to uphold that important tradition.
With best regards,
Hi, long time lurker 1st post.
Saw this in the local birdcage liner and thought I’d see if anybody else was in the area and had time to go to this “panel discussion”
Good question
Yes it is. Typical for Mecklenburg County, after all the ‘rat convention was held there. (and they still owe bills from that- go figure)
Life in Iredell County (just North of Davidson) is completely the opposite.
Plus home to most of the NASCAR Teams.
New Signup here so all My posts are under scrutiny, just waiting on the Mods to review them...
Wish we didn’t live so far away!
Do you have a sports shooting association, gun club, NRA local organization, anything of that sort to get the word out?
Sweet! Will be interesting if You get a reply.
Funny You say that because in the very same birdcage liner was a blurb about a Cop nearby getting shot in the chest in front of the Copshop by another Cop during "Training" (no vest BTW)
Just found this too:
North Carolina Rifle & Pistol Association
www.ncrpa.org/
The North Carolina Rifle Association was established in 1938 as the sole state-wide organization affiliated with the National Rifle Association.
Got the Grandson here right now and fixin' to start running errands in a few.
I'll be back later Today and hopefully have a report from contacting them.
Praying My knee will be better by Monday so I can go to this "Panel' and see if they can handle the TRUTH! or if I get shutdown/tossed out.
GA is not THAT far away;)
Thanks!

I'll bet the Girls are more intelligent than the "panel" is.
O.K. sent out E-mails to area Shops/Ranges and NCRPA.
Waiting for replies...
Cool! We’ll see what develops.
Thanks very much for your note. Rest assured that multiple members of our panel are steeped in relevant factual and legal knowledge, and strong supporters of the right of individual citizens to keep and bear arms.
Unfortunately some organizations have used their websites and social media to spread a rumor during the past week that no one on our panel has those qualities. It wouldve been more responsible of them to at least contact me first for info about any panelists they dont know, before making comments like that.
Best regards,
This is one of the more rational small colleges out there, and my daughter, a conservative Catholic at a liberal (compared to us) Presbyterian college, was treated very fairly. I therefore intend to take the college at its word until proven otherwise, so I replied as follows:
Thats exactly why I sent my Email. I saw that things were getting a little hot on Facebook and a couple of the better known general political and specifically RKBA websites, and I was trying to be a voice of reason by telling posters that I would check and get the facts.
I havent seen any organization spreading rumors on those particular sites, though just a number of individuals who were concerned and expecting the worst.
With that said, RKBA advocates have not always been treated fairly in academia or government (I have personal experience of that due to my involvement in that litigation many years ago including character assassination in the public press, veiled threats from local law enforcement, and attempts to get me fired from my employment, which went nowhere but were still unsettling to a young lawyer). Not everyone is trained in legal niceties or in the principle of being even-handed and collecting all the facts before hitting send. I hope you will understand that some gun-rights supporters expect the worst because they have always received the worst.
I am glad that the panel represents all sides of the issue; it is exactly what I would expect from a school of Davidsons quality and character.
I will be pleased to spread the word to RKBA and political websites where I am a regular poster.
With best regards, and wishing your panel every success.
Yours very truly,
