WASHINGTON (AP) — Their government has failed to keep the doors open and has told federal workers to stay off the job as the political parties fight over spending and health care in austere times.
Now Congress and President Barack Obama are sending this message to the 800,000 sidelined government employees: We don't know when the impasses will end but you will get reimbursed for lost pay once the government reopens.
With the partial shutdown entering its fifth day, the GOP-run House passed a bill Saturday that would make sure the furloughed workers get paid for not working. The White House backs the bill and the Senate was expected to OK it, too, but the timing was unclear.
The 407-0 vote in the House was uniquely bipartisan, even as lawmakers continued their partisan rhetoric.

BFD They get paid every Friday for "not working", that why they were furloughed as "nonessential"! We need to be trimming fat not playing silly games.

I “lived” in the WDC area for 30 years. These Fed “workers” always get retroactive pay for any stoppage. ALWAYS. Why do you think many of the most wealthy counties ring the beltway of WDC? Your tax monies at work. It is a paid vacay for them...yet they knash their teeth for effect. Disgusting.
Now you know what they in GOP house mean when they say they are worried about spending/deficits.

They could have added conditions to this, like make Federal employees get health care from exchanges, but instead they all just caved to libs and handed GS Fed employees our $$$ again.

As long as they're getting paid anyway, why keep them at home? What difference does it make? Why not make them earn that pay rather than waste millions in hard earned tax dollars on.......nothing?
This is a CLASSIC example of government waste. We're obviously over taxed!
I live in Maryland and I been reminding Freepers here for years how Newt/Dole did this for that shutdown 1995/1996 too.

The work stops, but the wasteful spending never does.
The problem with the bureaucrats is that also the work never starts...at least truly productive work. There are an incredible percentage of Fed “workers” who are make-work jobs.
Next should be the NIH funding (cancer treatment for kids), and then the Nation Guard funding, and that crack in the dam will become a torrent of line item funding bills, if the conservatives hold to the plan.
Just my 2 cents...
We need to think of this as a paid vacation for federal workers... because that’s what it is...

That's the existing Federal system.
