Boston Herald ^ | October 6, 2013 | Peter Gelzinis

They filled the Dorchester apartment yesterday afternoon, dressed in their Sunday suits and black dresses, some whispering in Portuguese, others erupting in anguished wails.

At the center of this universe of grief sat Dominga Carvalho, a 60-year-old woman who had just flown back from Cape Verde to bury the third, and last, son she’s lost to these streets.

What an odd coincidence, in a wild west city such as Boston. And someone who worked 16 hours a day. That left the rest of the day -- 8 hours -- for an appropriate amount of sleep.

in boston, led by our mensa member mayor, tom menino, we know that the biggest threat is if a walmart moves to the city. making sure walmart stays out is how we spend most of our time.

I’m sorry for this woman’s grief, but what a useless article. Son dies, mother upset, father upset, why? why? why? And that’s about it.

I learned nothing from that, other than to avoid the Cape Verdeans in Beantown, who are evidently a violent lot, so there’s that.

This Cape Verdean issue has been going on for some time. Their kids disproportionately become violent criminals here and their families blame American culture for making them so. When we’ve deported their thugs back to CV, they have reportedly continued their criminality at home, and both countries blame the other for the demographic.

The article notes that the deceased shared an apartment with his “fiancee” and their toddler son. Once upon a time in America such a statement appearing in the newspaper would be embarrassing. But, alas, no more.

Read the comments. The Vic was a member of a known Portuguese speaking crime family.

When someone dies, his or her sex partner becomes the “fiancé” or “fiancée.” It’s a little nod to traditional mores.

It's all written not to offend, fiance covers the illegitimate child or children and live-in girl friend, entrepreneur covers his drug dealing. Parents grief, hard working 1000 hrs a week covers thier responsibility so that leaves someone else to blame According to the story this would have never happened if.............fill in the blanks but leave us out of the story

According to the story this would have never happened if ...

Yes, the point is to make everyone feel responsible, other than the participants. If you observe even a statistical correlation between this lifestyle and early death, you're "blaming the victim."

Yes they do this all the time in the press. Believe it may have to do with future benefits, or future lawsuits, as much as it has to do with fishing for sympathy.

Would like to see just once a photo of an engagement ring on the hand of the grieving fiancee.

Or a future wedding date or honeymoon plans mentioned.

I'll keep waiting but the cynic in me tells me not to hold my breath.
