DETROIT (WWJ) - One Detroit business owner is taking matters into his own hands to make sure thieves leave his liquor store alone.

Steve Bahoura, who has owned the Van Dyke Liquor Market since the 90s, said he deals with several break-ins each year and he’s tired of it.

Most recently, Bahoura said someone broke into his business, located near I-94 on the east side, in broad daylight.

“They break through the back door at 9 o’clock in the morning,” he told WWJ’s Mike Campbell.

Bahoura said he’s caught the crook on surveillance video and turned the footage over to the cops, but so far there haven’t been any arrests. So, he’s personally offering reward money in hopes that somebody will turn the robber in to police.

“I’m willing to give a $2,000 cash reward to whoever turns him in for me,” he said.

Until that man is caught, Bahoura said he’s going to be sleeping in the store with his trusty shotgun, because there’s no other way to protect his livelihood. Bahoura has two words for anyone who’s thinking of robbing his store now: Watch out.

“I don’t want to shoot him but if somebody comes here, sure I will shoot him. I’ll shoot him and I will kill him. If I’ve got to shoot my gun, you’re not going to believe it, these bullets will go all over his body. So next time, the people won’t do that to anybody else,” he said.

The owner would be arrested if he had a business in Chicago and kept a shotgun.

A shotgun is a fine defensive weapon for such situations. A few years back a local car stereo shop owner killed one and left another in a wheelchair for life after a couple idiots broke into his store in the middle of the night.

The first thing you do in a situation like this where you take matters into your own hands is to keep your mouth shut.

IF there is trouble and you end up with a body on your hands then you need something to conceal it with, and something to transport it to another location - above all, DNA and fingerprint identification needs to be heavily considered.

You don’t advertise unless you’re just trying to bluff thieves into finding some other mark.

I'm sure there are several Detroit administrative fees, permits, penalties, assessments and contributions that must be satisfied before he can sleep (standing up) in his store.

Then there's the administrative fees, permits, penalties, assessments and contributions necessary for the shotgun shells, and of course used shotgun shell disposal administrative fees, permits, penalties, assessments and contributions.

I hope his bank account holds out.

. Police will be passing out information on how to start block clubs and neighborhood citizen patrols

Isn't that what George Zimmerman was a part of?

As a side note, almost all the party stores, small markets and gas stations in Detroit are owned by Chaldeans..........

Exactly why I would rather take my chances in Detroit than many American cities.

Just last week the new Detroit police chief said he was nearly carjacked. Happily he used it to teach a lesson about situational awareness. I read some further comments that I really liked where he warned criminals that Detroit has a growing population of armed people and legal endeavors might be a lifesaving choice.

Agreed, why go public about your Mode of Operation?

If I were him, I’d sell the damn business and set up in a normal town. Even Fort Detroit in 1740 did not see shop owners sleeping in their shops. Sure, they had indian raids but it was a lot easier than Detroit, circa 2013!

Tell that guy to get the heck out of the hole called Detroit, (I am saying that and I grew up there!).

Detroit will eventually become as depicted in many Hollywood films where it gets so bad, Eddie Murphy runs away to California and Robocop is introduced onto the crime-ridden city streets.

So far I really like this new chief. He’s been tough.

He’s stripped the mayor’s security detail from 20 officers down to 6. He’s ordered that 2 dozen officers responding to simple break ins is unacceptable when 2 to 4 is plenty in most situations. Most of all I like the fact that he’s telling the truth about the inability of police to protect everyone.

He’s even considering criminal charges against dispatchers who have lied to callers who ended up dead.

This reminds me of the Los Angeles Korean shop owners who "stood their ground" during the Rodney King fiasco. I sure as heck didn't blame them.

It was weird, watching those Koreans, with those white bands around their heads, hunker down against...us.

The property isn't worth squat, the liquor license alone is probably worth more. He'd have to spend 20 times its value on a new site in the suburbs then wait for a liquor license........

Chaldeans are tough SOB's, they stick together and they don't put up with crap. If this guy says he's going to shoot the next intruder he'll do it....Considering where they're from, they know how to survive.

I think so.

While I don’t like playing race politics, I think in some situations you have to start with someone acceptable to the predominant racial population. This chief is doing things that no white police chief could ever do in Detroit like restarting the stop and frisk policy ended by Coleman Young and encouraging legally armed citizens.

But think of the potential collateral damage of a shotgun in a liquor store - who wants to mop the floor with good booze?

It happened in the UK - some blokes were continually breaking into this guys shed. Finally he had enough of it and "laid in wait" for them to break in again. He was arrested on the charge of "laying in wait" - I was being sarcastic that it'll soon happen here.

You sound like you shoot from the hip before ascertaining all the facts - like maybe asking where I was coming from? Huh?

Chaldeans are tough indeed, they're Iraqi Christians and they budge for no man or camel. If he kills an intruder he will go to jail and the intruder's family will get a financial reward from the courts. Better he move, take a hit on his losses and get the heck out of that city while he's still alive.

Too many FReepers are behaving like perfect low info voters and pimping completely false assumptions.

You are correct, this guy will not be charged if he kills someone breaking into his store. Even before Michigan's stand your ground law, Michigan prosecutors generally didn't criminally charge these cases.

In Michigan cities cannot make their own gun ordinances, the state constitution rules supreme and every single city and municipality in the state is open carry. Open carry is even legal in our state capitol building.
