As Columbus Day weekend approaches and New England fall foliage reaches its peak, the U.S. Forest Service has decreed that 22 privately run campgrounds in New Hampshires White Mountain National Forest will have to close because of the government shutdown.
According to the Union Leader, while the campsites are situated on federally owned land, they are entirely run by a private company, which has a contract to operate the sites and which pays the federal government a cut of the fees it collects. That means the closure will not only prevent thousands of campers from using the facilities, it will actually cost the federal government money it would have collected if it had simply done nothing.
Kent Tower, the president of the company that runs the campsites, told the Union Leader that the federal government does not contribute anything to running or staffing the sites. We pay all the maintenance, all the upkeep, all the help, all the insurance, he said. All the trucks, all the equipment is ours. They have nothing to do with it.

It costs them money to force them to close, however.

Why do i get the feeling that if i tried to camp there anyways that federally funded rangers would show up instantly to kick me out?
Too bad the feds don’t remember who it is the land belongs to.
If there are deleterious efects of a shutdown, then government is too big. Public Parks should be run by private industry, andthen they would be open.
Wow. We didn’t have the Internet during the last shut down.
Hmmmm. I suppose ski runs are next. Aspen, Park City, Snowbird, Veil, Breckenridge...
This is dictatorship. He is proclaiming the rights of the royal forests like the Normans had in ancient England. This action converts Americans from citizens to subjects.
Barry Soetoro hatin’ on America.

wish one of our drones would take out this house.
See, in Barry’s mind, Blacks don’t camp. Only white Christian crackas camp.
This is all being micromanaged by the big guy. He should be doing what he was sworn in to do.
NH gets what it votes for
You don’t see him shutting down WIC offices, Snap programs,
Welfare payments....those are HIS voters.
He thinks he can hurt the average taxpayer and they will
bend but I got news for him, it just makes us madder
than heck and we ain’t gonna take it laying down.
This is America and we don’t play that sh*t.
Doesn’t anyone remember Lexington
It’s that time again.
What does their lease say and where the heck is the emergency injunction suit??? Isn’t ANYONE fighting back?
My read of the article is that the parks ARE run by "private industry" and then they pay a % of their profit to the Feds.

They have closed Inns, living history museums, access to Mt. Vernon. etc - all privately owned.
Why aren't the republicans, FOX, us, you, screaming this from the roof tops.
It's NOT the republicans doing this! It's the WH - playing the Narcissist in Chiefs game of 'getting even"
And BTW! the reason he hasn't closed 'his' golf course on the base - where the commissaries ARE closed, is because 'it's supported by user fees.
HELLO. Anyone out there able to connect the dots. These parks, inns, etc are supported by 'user fees'. What is the difference, except that the Boy Who Would King will never deny himself HIS 'privileges."
WE need to be careful to know the truth of it ourselves and not get caught unable to refute someone who says the WH has the right to do this - AND be clear that it IS at the direction of the WH
