Brown vetoes bill to allow non-citizens on juries

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Gov. Jerry Brown has vetoed a bill that would have allowed non-citizens who are legal residents to serve as jurors in California.

"Jury service, like voting, is quintessentially a prerogative and responsibility of citizenship," Brown said in an announcement Monday accompanying his veto of AB1401. "This bill would permit lawful permanent residents who are not citizens to serve on a jury. I don't think that's right."

The bill by Assemblyman Bob Wieckowski, D-Fremont, was intended to expand the pool of prospective jurors. Wieckowski said in a statement that lawful immigrants are part of the fabric of communities and should be included in such civic obligations.

"They benefit from the protections of our laws, so it is fair and just that they be asked to share in the obligation to do jury duty, just as they serve in our courts, schools, police departments and armed forces," Wieckowski said.

>> Outsource juries?

Just trying the cases Americans won’t try.

But seriously, Brown’s decision was the *right* one.

That’s rare.

I do have to congratulate Brown on this brief moment of sanity. He actually made a decision that was good and proper for the State of California.

This only dealt with legal immigrants. But illegals can practice law now in CA. Go figure.

If he vetoes non-citizens on juries, what about non-citizens practicing law? What do you say, Governor Moonbeam?

This is only because he gave them drivers licenses and law licenses. He can't have illegal aliens both arguing law and adjudicating law against citizens, can he?

I do not trust Brown as far as I can throw him. Sanctuary cities, ignore state and federal laws.Brown will shield any non citizen found on a jury.

Wieckowski said in a statement that lawful immigrants are part of the fabric of communities and should be included in such civic obligations.

Gangbangers and Mass murderers are also part of the fabric of communities. The fabric isn't perfect, and it is one of the faculties of the socially adapted ordinary citizen to discriminate among them.

That is what makes us uniquely human, as opposed to a Nation of sociopaths.

I forgot to specially note the phrase, lawful immigrants.
Apparently that is impossible for English as a second language for those not quite "lawful"...

“The bill . . . was intended to expand the pool of prospective jurors.”

Should just about double the pool of prospective jurors

Is this the first recent time that Brown did something sane re California’s legal system?

It’s extremely rare when a dyed in the wool liberal like Brown has a moment of patriotic clarity and doesn’t screw over the citizens of America as his first order of business.

I guess the illegal immigration lobby didn’t pay up enough cash.

Well, he did the right thing, but I am cynical enough to think he may have gotten a ton of pressure to veto it, but in his heart, he wishes he could sign it.
