Los Angeles students get iPads for classroom, play video games instead

You have to give school officials in Los Angeles credit for a good idea: put iPads in the hands of over 650,000 students to give them the most advanced learning tools available in an effort to boost their interest in academics.

But the $1 billion plan is taking some heat after students in the nation's second-largest school district cracked the tablets’ security settings to forgo reading, writing and ‘rithmetic and instead post on Facebook and play games during class time.

"a good idea"

It was a stupid idea and just an excuse for not teaching the students the basic 3R's. As for them figuring out how to play video games - I echo the earlier duhs.

A billion dollars! That’s one thousand million taxpayer bucks! And so far only two thirds of the machines have been returned while the young thieves are surfing porn sites. I guess they’ll get credit for their sex education studies.

I remember this article from years ago when the OLPC (one laptop per child) craze was high:

India ditches ‘potentially harmful’ $100 laptop plan

http://www.zdnet.com/india-ditches-potentially-harmful-100-laptop-plan-3039279996/

India has declared it won’t be buying any $100 laptops, saying it prefers to spend the money on teachers and more traditional teaching tools.

The Indian government rejected proposals by the country’s Planning Commission to buy the $100 (£54) hardware from Nicholas Negroponte’s One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project.

According to local newspaper Kaumudi, India’s education secretary Sudeep Banerjee said the project was “pedagogically suspect” and giving the country’s schoolchildren a laptop each could harm their creative thinking and analytical abilities.

He is quoted as telling the Planning Commission: “We cannot visualise a situation for decades when we can go beyond the pilot stage. We need classrooms and teachers more urgently than fancy tools.”

The OLPC project is “not mature enough to be taken seriously at this stage”, Banerjee added.

The first working prototype of the laptop was shown in May and the OLPC has already received its first order from Nigeria. The African country placed an order for one million of the Linux laptops, although the devices won’t go into production until orders for at least five million have been received.

Nothing will upgrade a blackboard and chalk and textbooks

pens, pencils and notepaper...

a well stocked school or public library

and a lot of study time...

Playing games is the least of the problems, media is keeping quit how many are “lost or broken”. Only in California, the insanity never ends.

Great; now we’ll get 5 million more letters from Yassir Arafat’s widow asking for money every day...

While my children aren’t thrilled, I’m glad they have to “show their work” for math; calculators save time for people who understand concepts, but are a crutch for those that don’t.

Years ago, before iPads and laptops, I saw a report of a brawl that had erupted in a skool study hall in Philadelphia. The reason? A disagreement over what program was to be on the TV.

We've been sliding down the slippery slope for quite a while.
