John Cornyn seeks to protect right flank with first TV ad

Senate Minority Whip John Cornyn (R-Tex.) released the first television ad of his reelection campaign Monday in an attempt to shore up his image among conservative voters.

"National Journal named him the second most conservative senator in America," says the narrator of the 30-second spot. The commercial mentions Cornyn's votes against Obamacare and support for "smaller government" and a balanced budget amendment, among other things.

Cornyn has not attracted any major primary challengers yet, but he is taking the potential threat of one very seriously. The fact that he is releasing a TV ad at this early stage of the election cycle reflects this.

A Cornyn campaign aide said the ad is airing statewide, with several hundred thousand dollars behind it.

Cornyn owes his political career to GW Bush, who appointed Cornyn to court justice and AG. Bush was also instrumental in Cornyn's election to the Senate. Bush also got Freshman Cornyn the chairmanship of the Immigration Committee.

Do you remember in 2007 when McCain cussed out Cornyn and told him to eff off. On the floor of the Senate.

I live in New Jersey and I got his number too!!

He’s only a little better than the Two-Horned RINO we have in the Governor’s Office here and that isn’t good enough!!!!

I’m really surprised one of the state’s up and comers, like Todd Staples, Ken Paxton, or Dan Patrick didn’t get into the Senate primary instead of the crowded races for TX Lt. Gov and AG.

As it is now, if Cornyn is going to be defeated, he needs an opponent. Eric Wyatt might be a nice guy, but he has absolutely no money and no connections. If Louie Gohmert or Ted Poe were to challenge Cornyn, he’d be toast.

I’m surprised that Cornyn hasn’t fielded a strong challenger. He’s the Humpty Dumpty of this primary season. Having said that, maybe I shouldn’t be surprised: there’s probably a reason Cornyn’s running ads claiming to be conservative. Maybe HE knows something we don’t.

Protect his flank?

From what?

Last we saw of his being anywhere near a boxing ring, metaphorically, he was collecting bets against his fellow republican and Texas senator

The WaPo is trying to help him

These guys are do out of touch.

The tepid schmooze republicans have been out since theiddle of Romney’s second debate

It wasnt a revelation It was a last straw

In reading the replies, I agree with them...Cornyn is too late. My vote will be for someone else.

I called his office the morning before the senate vote to fund obamacare

I heard he was voting for Obama.

There was no one picking up his phones in any office

I called Ted Cruz’ office and spoke with a staffer there. Tolls him no one was pocking up at cornyn’s. told him I was disgusted. And that I support Ted with all the work he’s doig

That was before the filibuster

No answer on the day before the most important vote I’ve ever seen

Cornyn knows his lunch got eaten by Cruz, like so many others who pay lip service to the right... Cruz-es and Mike Lee-s are what we want in congress, anything less is just playing politics. Cornyn, you could humble yourself and get in line behind the real leaders in the Senate, then you could save you campaign cash for the election and not the primary... buuut, I guess you’re just a pol...

Gohmert was on Glenn Becks show last week. He said he was praying, seeking guidance on whether or not he should run for Senate. I think he is seriously considering it.

I pray he runs. If we have Gohmert and Cruz in the Senate, we’ll be hated by every politician in both parties. It just can’t get much sweeter than that. :-D

Everyone of Cornyn’s office numbers I called were busy for several days before the vote. The day after the vote I got through and unloaded on the girl that answered. Never again will I support this a-hole.

Also:

Endorsed Arlen Specter......-687,000
Endorsed Charlie Crist......-468,000
Funded Lisa Murkowski while leaving the republican nominee in Alaska and other conservative candidates twisting in the wind........-537,0000
