NFL Bans Off-Duty Officers from Carrying Guns into Games
Breitbart.com ^ | 10/07/2013 | AWR Hawkins

A new NFL security policy bars off-duty police officers from carrying their guns into football games. Although it is normal for police officers to carry a gun 24/7--in case they come face to face with a criminal whom they had arrested and who may have revenge on his mind--the NFL says police who are not specifically assigned to work the game are not allowed to carry their guns.

...and when the law says the NFL can NOT do this?

the NFL lost credibility and gravitas years ago. Perhaps they should just be draped in pink and leave it as a wuss league.

This is nuts.
Have off-duty cops really been a problem or is this the escalating anti-gun hysteria?
Cops should always be armed, after all they can be called into duty any time with no time to go home and get their hardware and ammo out of their two separate safes.

So the NFL is allowed to override state laws?

Interesting

I have a family member who is in Law Enforcement. He is REQUIRED to carry his weapon 24/7

Other people might run into revenge seeking individuals too. So if other legal carriers can not carry in NFL stadia, I am not sure why there should be a public employee exception. I guess one could make a better trained argument, but then that might well argue for off-duty cops, ex-cops, off-duty military and all veterans.

Still you are right that this creates a large gun free area that criminals might well exploit.

I suggest the police associations send a legal letter to the NFL that they expect full security to be provided by the NFL for officers complying with NFL and to set aside a billion dollar trust for lawsuits where they don’t meet their obligation.

Should be sent to any organization demanding gun free zones.

This is more evidence that any one who has any kind of national organization should make sure they set it up in some small to medium sized city.

Not only should we start moving the various bureaus of the federal government to Omaha, Shreveport etc, organizations like the NFL should not leave their headquarters in places where the culture is against their organization. Too many people are too easily influenced by the culture around them. If I were an NFL owner, firing Goodell and moving the NFL office to some place in the heartland would be two of my top priorities.

I am mandated to carry off-duty. Unless I'm going to a drinking, going to the beach, the gym, or any time when I'm not positive I can safeguard my weapon.

I went to a major college basketball game at an NBA arena last year. I was armed. They had me go to the security office and write down what seat I would be sitting in. Last night I went to a concert. I was armed. They just called a supervisor over, he checked my ID, and sent me in with a "thank you."

“in case they come face to face with a criminal whom they had arrested and who may have revenge”

Utter BS, we carried because technically we are obligated to intervene in the case of a violent felony commission or robbery. This is the kind of drivel besides LEO’s that cross the line on police to oppressor/criminal that feeds the us versus them mentality.

I am not a police officer, but I have a concealed carry permit.

I carry a concealed handgun every time I go in the Hampton (Virginia) Coliseum for any event. The management does not like it, but they cannot stop me because Virginia law restricts them from banning concealed weapons on their premises.

I’m pretty sure any arena/stadium in Virginia which has been in any way subsidized by taxpayer dollars is subject to the same legal restriction (those located on school properties excepted, of course).

Besides why go to a game when if football is your thing a 40”+ tv is better anyway?

People with BO, lots of drunks, lots of stupid under 30’s showing their arse, bad and overly expensive food, pay to park, pay too much for ticket, too loud, cannot see most of the time, and really hot since new stadium designs prohibit air flow. Did I mention lots of people with BO.

Why should that argument be restricted to unarmed LEOs? The remainder of the citizenry deserves the same ability defend themselves that the police do.

In my state the ordinary citizen is not allowed to carry, open or concealed, into a sporting event.

I think cops should have to abide by the same limitations as citizens. Conversely, citizens should have the same rights as cops.

In Texas LEO’s are not required to carry by state law. However they do have a duty to always protect anyone in need. My former Agency required me to carry, and State law allowed me to carry anywhere except in air planes without the pilot’s permission.

In Texas all LEO’s have a duty to always protect those in need. If the LEO is not carrying and some dirt bag threatens a citizen with a gun, the LEO still must protect.
