The name of a certain pro football team in Washington, D.C., has inspired protests, hearings, editorials, lawsuits, letters from Congress, even a presidential nudge. Yet behind the headlines, it's unclear how many Native Americans think "Redskins" is a racial slur.

Any time this president speaks we’re in trouble.

Based on his comments on the Redskins I’m surprised he hasn’t requested the Patriots name be changed because it’s offensive to Socialists.

I cannot think of anything that keeps the “red man / woman” more in the mind of the white man / woman, the black man / woman, etc., than sports’ teams names. Well, ok, old Westerns (shows) may be a close 2nd with “Whitey”. But the recognition via sports teams is, in this century, surely better than most (not all) of the old shows. I doubt that 2% of the people who use the words “Washington Redskins” consider the name in any way derogatory to American Indians, tho’ I’m sure 50% probably are derogatory to the sports team. :-)

Now, maybe the above is not “how it should be”, but, to quote a certain radio personality, “it is what it is.”

Does the red man wish to disappear from public consciousness? Fine. Let’s rename the Washington Redskins to, say, the Washington Bureaucrats. It’d be appropriate!

...in a truly decent society, some would argue, what hurts a few should be avoided by all...

It is hurtful to me and large number of other people that obama and the "progressives/socialists" are in our government. Therefore, to make this a truly decent society, I demand that they leave so I won't feel hurt and pain.

How about calling Green Bay, the Green Bay Local Packers #320 United?

I find the name ‘Cowboys’ to be offensive, but it isn’t my place to tell Jerry Jones to change the name of his team.

Green Bay fans must be whistling past the graveyard on this subject...

I suggest they be called the

“Washington POST-CLOVIS BERING STRAIT LAND BRIDGE MIGRANTS”.

It may be a little long, but anthropologically accurate.

When any team owner is called before congress (or any other kangaroo court type thing) they should ask one question “Are any of your shareholders?”

If none of them answer “yes” then he should get up, say “Mind your own business” and walk out.

Congress has NO business meddling in the private affairs of anyone, that includes steroid use in baseball, team names, health care etc.

Personally I find the name Washington Redskins to be extremely insensitive and offensive. So much so that I get a sick feeling whenever I hear it. They should change the name to “Redskins”.

This morning Jody Dean, the resident moron, on KLUV radio in Dallas offered up the name the Washington Americans.

I almost gagged on my toothbrush. If there is anything LESS American than what goes on in Washington D.C., I can’t think what it could be.

If they are forced to drop the name “Redskins” I suggest that they do not have a replacement name. Just go as the Washington, DC NFL football team.

They should change “The Washington Redskins” to a name that does not bring despicable and negative associations:

“The Redskins”

Or to borrow from Prince, we could call them “the team formerly known as the Redskins”.

I don’t like the way this is going, I hope they keep the name though.
