President Obama has ordered officials to resume paying death benefits to the families of fallen soldiers and was "very disturbed" they had been halted due to the government shutdown, said White House spokesman Jay Carney.
Carney said Obama had ordered the Office of Management and Budget to work with White House lawyers to find a way to restart the benefits and expects a fix Wednesday.
"He was not pleased to learn of this problem," Carney said, adding it was "unthinkable" that those who had lost family members would go without benefits.
The White House said that Congress was warned that death benefits would be halted in a government shutdown and said the "Pay Our Military Act" passed late last month, which authorized paying the salary of service members, did not "explicitly" address the issue.
Republicans have said the administration should have interpreted the law to allow the benefits.
Separately, the House has taken up legislation to explicitly allow the Pentagon to make payments of $100,000 to the survivors of troops who are killed.
In an earlier letter to Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.) accused the Pentagon of a “careless legal interpretation” to deny benefits.
“The Department of Defense, through a careless legal interpretation, is now mistakenly denying payments of Death Gratuity and other benefits to the families of those who make the ultimate sacrifice,” Hunter wrote.
At the White House, Carney said "none of this would be an issue if the government was open," blaming the Republicans for the shutdown.

They came out and said, "Congress was warned prior to the shutdown that these benefits would be stopped even despite your efforts to legislatively head this off, your legislative efforts only protect the service men and women and not the families"---and that you blew it because that was a LOOPHOLE and you should have seen this coming.
DUNCAN: Let me take off my Congress hat and put on my Marine hat; That statement sickens me---because here is the reason why. We explicitly asked if THIS was going to be covered when we passed that pays for this, and they said YES! This is the DOD trying to cover their own tail on this. They made the wrong decision, and they need to fix it.....

There is something wrong patriotically with the two big guards who walked up and down. I tend to think/believe these guards represent the dregs of our Nation. Their photos and names need to be taken and recorded. Someday they to can be intimidated.

And Obama didn't ORDER the payments - the Fisher House Foundation offered to pay the money in the interim and then get repaid by the government when it is back open. Obama agreed to this.
BTW:
The House voted 423-0 [thats right - ALL of them, excluding 3 vacant seats] to restore the death payments. It WOULD have passed the Senate too and Obama WOULD have signed the bill.
BUT, when Harry Reid heard about the Fisher House deal, he REFUSED to put the bill to a vote - the BASTARD !!! I guess he figures that Fisher House has a ton of money that they can lay out until the shutdown is resolved ...
It seems the Limbaugh theory is at play here. Shut something vital down, let the noise level rise, then swoop in to save the day.
