WASHINGTON -- Of his 45 lifetime arrests, Rep. John Lewis said Tuesday's was the most pleasant.
The Atlanta Democrat participated in a large demonstration supporting immigration reform on the National Mall, then along with seven other U.S. House Democrats and about 200 others, was arrested for blocking traffic in front of the Capitol. The civil rights movement veteran was an old pro at being arrested, so as he and his colleagues were placed in plastic handcuffs and led to a paddywagon, he was dispensing a few tips. Said Lewis:
"I encouraged them to just be patient and adhere to the philosophy and the discipline of nonviolence. They were orderly. These are the best police officers I ever dealt with. They kept asking us, ‘Are you ok? Are you all right? Do you want some water? Do you need any help?’ It was just so orderly, so peaceful, better than I have ever had in any demonstration that I’ve ever participated in."Many of those other demonstrations -- most famously the "Bloody Sunday" march in Selma, Ala. -- ended in violence. On this one, Lewis said many police officers sided with demonstrators' cause. As he left the House floor today, Lewis shook hands and chatted with one Capitol police officer, telling him the officers performed their jobs well.

Lewis wants illegal Mexicans given citizenship because he thinks he has some sort of mystical relationship with them, they being darker than Europeans. He also wants to assure Democrats will be in power in perpetuity.
