Cruz promises Republican victory in shutdown fight

Richmond, Virginia (CNN) - Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, blamed by Democrats and some of his fellow Republicans as a chief architect of the ongoing government shutdown, struck back on Saturday, faulting President Obama and Senate Democrats for the political stalemate.

“Let me be very clear, I don’t think we should be in a shutdown,” Cruz said in a speech to conservatives in the Virginia state capital. “Throughout the course of it, I have said we should not shut down the government. But sadly this is Harry Reid’s and President Obama's shutdown.”

. . .

In the run-up to the shutdown, Cruz - whose profile has risen considerably among conservatives since taking office this year - had lobbied Republicans in the House and Senate not to relent, even as the president was promising not to sign any bill that would alter "Obamacare."

Cruz reminded the audience that House Republicans have passed multiple “narrowly targeted continuing resolutions” to fund parts of the government as negotiations continue, but he criticized Democrats for refusing to pass them.

He said Senate Democrats are “dug in.”

“We are in the midst of a battle,” Cruz said. “Their position is untenable right now.”

. . .

“How do we win?” he asked. “If you trust the media, if you trust the voices in Washington, if you even trust, god forbid, some of the elected Republicans in Washington, they say we can’t win this fight. The only way to win this fight is the way we won every other fight throughout the history of the republic, which is solutions don’t come from Washington, D.C., they come from the people.”

“Career politicians in both parties have gotten us into this mess,” he said. “But it’s going to be the American people who get us out.”

2014 is going to be a big win for the tea party and the GOP. Remember, Obama’s not going to be on the ticket, and his main supporters do not show up on mid-term elections.

Every step of the way on this battle Senator Cruz has laid out his plan in simple terms that anyone can understand.

He has stated continually that the end game was for the House to do their constitutional duty (Budgeting) and defund Obamacare.

It was his plan to send up individual CRs each funding a separate function of government and let the Democrats own the problem. By doing this, and not including any funding for Obamacare, it shuts up the Democrats mouths that the GOP wants to shut the government down and it effectively kills Obamacare.

The added benefit of his approach is that it has smoked out the cockroaches in the GOP who pretend to be against Obamacare with their mouths, but now have nowhere to hide, because their backs are up against the wall.

It has also rallied the base, the Tea-Party in advance of the 2014 elections.

Ultimately, however, this plan requires some manhood, some political courage from the GOP Senate and House members to be successful.

-----------------------------------

Simply because it needs repeating, since so many don't seem to get it.

Amen!! Even though it's as clear as it can possibly be ;-)

Fine, ok Senator - other than mouthing platitudes, what exactly do you or “we” need to do? Thus far, we sit and watch but little changes.

Enough platitudes. What is the plan?

I like Cruz and would vote for him in a NYC minute. But you make very good points and ask very fair questions.

There already has been ‘a victory of sorts’.

Cannot be claimed until we have it... there is no victory until the winner crosses the line.

The people may become better informed...but their leverage is unfortunately in the hands of congressional leaders at this point....and there’s no winner if Obamacare is funded.

Apparently you haven't been paying attention either.

I'm posting the same reply I posted to BigBob, since you apparently have been hiding under a rock during the last month or so.

Paul Ryan didn't cave.

The Gov't will still be shut down.

Ryan is budget chair...now why should be not negotiate a budget?

This thing is a disaster. As open enrollments proceed, people will be looking at him as the modern day Paul Revere

He has stated continually that the end game was for the House to do their constitutional duty (Budgeting) and defund Obamacare.

That's called an objective. Not a plan or roadmap to realize it. And "a plan" is the term which I reponded to, not "end game" as you added in your comment. We all know what the end game WAS. The end game is not what's in question, it's how you get there - A Plan. I have been paying attention and I noticed that the term "Defund Obamacare" has morphed into "delay obamacare" which then morphed into nothing even close to defunding ObamaCare permanently.

We're talking about the republican party here so it's more likely a communication problem from their end than it is an anti-ObamaCare, pro-defund Freeper "not paying attention".

If the end game is still to defund ObamaCare as you stated, it's not looking good for us at the moment.

The truth of the matter is, Congress has had the right to defund ObamaCare long ago and continues to have that right, so why not just DEFUND IT?

Here's the comment of the poster and below that my reply to that poster:

Fine, ok Senator - other than mouthing platitudes, what exactly do you or “we” need to do? Thus far, we sit and watch but little changes.

Me: I like Cruz and would vote for him in a NYC minute. But you make very good points and ask very fair questions.

As you can see, the Freeper asked "what is the plan?" and NOT what is the "end game".

So now, SoConPubbie, who's not paying attention?

It was his plan to send up individual CRs each funding a separate function of government and let the Democrats own the problem. By doing this, and not including any funding for Obamacare, it shuts up the Democrats mouths that the GOP wants to shut the government down and it effectively kills Obamacare.

First, that's a plan a Senator has for the House. A good plan, yes but the problem is, can the average American name the last individual separate function of government the House most recently passed? Was it the cancer-stricken kids which was more than a week ago? Was it last week's re-opening the war memorials that needed not be closed by the Obama administration in the first place? To vote to re-open the war memorials that Obama closed looks more like the voters are accepting responsability for something they really did not do in the first place.

But that last one along with funding the fumerals of our dead soldiers typically is not included as part of a government shutdown. No vote needed, just a microphone to expose Obama and the democrats in front of the American people.

So, what's the latest individual separate function of government the House most recently passed in this plan?

I can't name it. I simply don't know. Which one was passed yesterday? And today? The day before? The plan was to pass at least one everyday. But that's not where the task of the plan ends. In order for the plan to be effective, after passing each individual separate function they need to run to the microphones and tell those Americans who do not sit in front of CSPAN 24/7 and tell them "it's in Obama's and Harry Reid's lap now" and that's the part missing.

It's a good plan which I have been supporting but that plan does not work unless the American voter is informed about it after each vote. Informing the American people is as important as voting to fund that individual function.

So, again I ask, what individual part of the federal government did the House vote on today "thursday" and yesterday "wednesday" or give me one they passed this week?

And if I can't name one, it's highly doubtful the average Americasn even knows about it.

People keep talking about dealing with the mess at the ballot box. This is not a proactive solution and the USA lost last time with this strategy. If you trust the ballot box you have to believe there are no illegals voting or any other non eligibles such as Muslims and other ineligible ‘change’ believers. No, I say if your in a struggle you don’t relax thinking your opponent is filled with sympathetic goodness.

Thanks! I was at work all day and they have the news on 24/7 and just got home but never even knew about these two until you informed me. Where did you find out about them?

The Hill is a newspaper covering Congress. TheHill.com. They usually have these stories up pretty quick.

There's also this page with the status of all speninding bills on Congress' website -- http://thomas.loc.gov/home/approp/app14.html -- which is a little slower than news reports from The Hill. But looking at it now, I guess there's another one I missed from Wednesday -- funding the FAA.

Thank you. So, basically unless you live and breathe politics as do most of us here in FR you would not have known about the House's passage of these 3 bills is exactly my point.

The average American does not go seeking this information so the leaders of the House MUST run to the microphones and tell the American people every such move they make.

This is why the republican party is still the party blamed for this shutdown.
