Gov. Jan Brewer said Wednesday that she does not want U.S. House Republicans to succeed in their bid to shut down the Affordable Care Act, saying it would devastate the state budget.
Brewer said she has never been a fan of Obamacare. And she pointed out she was among several governors who sued unsuccessfully to have it declared unconstitutional.
But the governor said once it was clear the law would take effect, she sought ways to have Arizona take advantage of a key provision rewarding states that expand their Medicaid programs. In this state, that is the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System, which she described as the gold standard of Medicaid programs.
And she said that made it worthwhile to fight with members of her own Republican Party, to the point of forming an alliance with legislative Democrats, to push the plan through.
The bottom line is we need that money in our economy to save rural hospitals and jobs in the rural areas, the governor said, as well as making sure hospitals in metropolitan areas, where most AHCCCS patients are seen, get paid. Its all about jobs and getting back federal dollars that our taxpayers have paid to the federal government, to bring them home.
Brewer estimates the Affordable Care Act will produce $1.6 billion in payments a year to the states Medicaid program. And she said there is no direct cost to Arizona taxpayers, with the states share being paid by a tax on hospitals.

sucks to be you Brewer.. Nobody forced you accept those funds.
That was the whole purchase of Obamacare. MORE dependency on Federal (Democrat) government.
Well you shouldn’t have put all your eggs in one basket...
Let me translate: I will certainly turn my back on my principles if it will make my state budget look bad, since I also turned my back on principle a few months ago......
Bye Jan. Like Jindal, you make a nice move, then stop short........
Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
That’s what happens when you hitch you wagon to a dead horse.
Behold the infantile screams when the federal teet is withdrawn.
“sucks to be you Brewer.. Nobody forced you accept those funds.”
Right. In fact, I believe the people who voted her into office were quite angry when she decided to do so.
Zero sympathy, Governor. I’m pissed I’ll be one of the folks who will have to bail you out for this act of stupidity. WE WARNED YOU that expanding our version of Medicaid would cost us a fortune, but YOU WOULDN’T LISTEN.
(Sorry about the shouting. Well, not really. I’ve never liked her.)
Brewer said she has never been a fan of Obamacare.”
I was against the bill before I was for it.
You betcha.
Boo Freakin’ Hoo Jan . . . no sympathy for RINO Gov’s.
She could have done what Nikky Haley did - nullification.
It’s amazing how similar government is to habit forming narcotics. She jonesin’ for that fix. Runny nose, incoherant speech, the whole nine yards.
>> take advantage of a key provision rewarding states that expand their Medicaid programs.
This is why America is dying...or dead already. States compete to increase spending so they can take a bigger slice of the federal pie.
Jan, Arizona would have to change their laws back. Simple as that! Undo the bad deeds for your people, leader.
What? Jindal said he likes Obama Care?
It’s already that entrenched?!
Must be starting to look like a possible win on defunding Obamacare if the leeches are starting to sweat their handouts.
If the state chose to plan their budget so foolishly, then it will be their own fault. Maybe after suffering the consequences, they will learn not to count chickens before they hatch.
>>Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
I was just thinking of that this morning. Every day, I wake up and find another conservative “turned” into one of the pod people.
The original story for Body Snatchers is a warning against communism. I guess it still is.
Because of course those hospitals are not going to raise fees to cover those new taxes........
Perhaps her response explains the real reasons for other Pubbies reluctance to fight...
Rick Scott wanted to expand medicaid here in Florida but our conservative legislature stopped it. Even Jeb Bush advised against doing so.
The hospitals that
(drumroll please...)
have to treat any illegal alien that walks in the door by federal law regardless of ability to pay.
I’m here all week.
Robert Bentley here in Alabama just flat said it wasn’t going to happen, period.
Hey Brewer, it won’t affect your state budget at all (unless you were stupid enough to expand Medicaid). In fact here in Georgia, we might actually benefit from it. Because of our state’s refusal to expand Medicaid, the federal government will not be offering Obamacare subsidies to people living below the poverty line. So if these career third, fourth, and fifth generation welfare recipients want Obamacare, they will have to move to a state that expanded Medicaid like New York, Massachusetts, California, or Arizona. In fact, to get them the hell out of our state, we might even pay for the bus ticket. Where do you prefer we send them? Phoenix? Or Tucson?
You can bet that many liberals will be moving to these states in droves and this will affect the elections.
I believe Kentucky will be another medicaid mecca along with Arizona.
McCain, Brewer... what is it about Arizona?
Yeah. Well, it’s either scramble with the budget or make our kids do it
Sigh
And where do you think that money is coming from Governor? A giant cactus?
Put the blame where it belongs.
With power mad socialist democrats, ignorant voters, greedy voters, and Justice Roberts.
Too damn bad Brewer. You sold our state out and now this is what we will live with. I say get rid of Obamacare and we’ll suffer the consequences.
I think ObamaCare needs to be fully implemented. That means excluding all the 100 or so exemptions Our Emperor has granted that circumvent the law. There needs to be a full blow crash top to bottom. Ugly as that may be.
That is, in essence, the seed of revolution against the liberals who seek to destroy the country and non-urban citizens of the USA.
“McCain, Brewer... what is it about Arizona?”, Carpetbagging LEECHES!
They got Barry Goldwater late in life.
btw, the original Kevin McCarthy version of that flick is a allegory for the communists' "long march" through American institutions. I often feel like Kevin McCarthy at the end of the flick, frantically running, shouting at someone - anyone - to listen.
Did she not have the power to stop zero from a second term? Didn’t she have an eligibility bill on her desk that signing it would require documentation to prove presidential eligibility?
If Arizona had done that, how many other states would have done so also?
Ah yes, the cocaine hustled by the central government for a couple of years. Once addicted, the same central government takes away the drugs leaving the costly addiction behind. Karl Marx is smiling in hell.
She’s not only willing to SELL THE U.S. CONSTITUTION OUT FOR MONEY, she’s PROUD OF IT!
She doesn’t get it. Obamacare was never designed to work, it was designed to fail...
...now she can lay in it!
If you read this you will find “Barry” was pretty RINO’y/GOP-ey and squishy about alot of things: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_Goldwater
she was a fool to take the money and her lack of leadership deserves failure.
Couple of things, Jan: How’d your state keep those rural places going before those federal dollars?
You didn’t pay those dollars, Jan...Bernanke created them. You just said “no no “ a couple times then shucked your panties and bent over.
Huh-unh...not working for me.
Another Republican Coward squawks!
