A single mother who has been working at McDonald's for 10 years was detained by police last week after she interrupted the company president's speech in Chicago to confront him about low worker pay.
Crain's Chicago Business reports that 26-year-old Nancy Salgado was part of a group protesting the event, asking company officials to raise worker wages to $15 an hour and allow employees to form a union without fear of retaliation.

For yahoo the comments are sum what heartening
lot of personal responsibility being embraced.
She’s free to go work for another company that’s willing to pay her more. This isn’t slavery.
Although she’s philosophically wrong, I’ll give her one kudos.
Most in her situation are totally dependent on us taxpayers.
In Baraq’s America, she’s crazy to be working for min wage, frankly.
Perhaps she will learn that what you get paid in jail, is significantly less than what McDonalds pays...but there is a lot of companionship.
McDonalds was never intended to be a family supporting job for the majority of it’s workers.
It was designed around the entry level worker, folks transitioning into the work force. Get some skills, move on.
Why should a person wiggle their way into this type of job, then think they should be able to set future corporate policy?
This displays just how business savvy this person is. They’re not worth more than minimum wage based on what she displays here.
Correction: had been working
Interestingly...a serial killer was allowed to continue to murder numerous people at the same event because he was a supporter of no minimum wage.
I can only give her 1/3 credit. One third credit for working, but 1/3 against her for not having a stable home life with a husband and father of her kids, 1/3 against her for assuming that she is entitled to fabulous money to support her for life in what is supposed to be an entry level job.
Wonder what her cell phone and starbucks bill is.
It’s a sad testament to the current state of affairs that we feel doing the bare minimum in almost praiseworthy.
She could buy one share of stock in the corporation and speak her mind about management at the stockholders meeting, but that would require some brains.
If she was worth more than $8.25 she could have gotten it elsewhere.
What if she is only worth $3.75?
I am certain that somewhere along the way we taxpayers are “helping her out.”
I find it strange she’s worked for Mickey Dee’s for 10 years and is still making $8.25/hr.
Frankly she’d be better off finding one of those 1-800-DISABLE lawyer outfits.
I think it is sad that in 10 years of work, she has not been able to advance in her career beyond an entry-level position.
She would be a medium-grade blogger.
Nor is a McD's cashier a career with pay and benefits accordingly.
No doubt, because on a min wage job she can still get food stamps, earned income credit, and a lot of other gravy.
I call it 1 800 BAD BACK, but it’s the same thing.
She needs to become an Obamacare Navigator.
Shes is free to, but clearly she is simply too Stupid to.
These minimum wage idiots are such a waste of everybody’s time.
I would see to it that every protester attending was fired in a very public way
I’m surprised more of these kind of operations are not “up or out”...basically if you work there for three years without getting a promotion, you get let go.
See post #14.
Wouldn’t she need to write English for that.
The reality is that in 10 yrs (maybe 5) most fast food ops will have 2 employees per shift, mostly to unload trucks and swab the crappers.
The push for $15/hr will certainly hasten automation.
I don’t see the message you want me to.
My point is, at Mickey Dee’s you’re either managing at 10 years or you’re gone. Nobody stays at $8.25 entry-level forever, or 10 years for that matter. If she was worth $3.50/hr she’d have been canned, even if she’s black.
Anybody who still makes minimum wage after 10 years with a company is overpaid. If she were worth more, she’d either have been promoted or hired away by someone else.
Back when kids worked during the summers and after school, burger flipping was one way to make pocket money and save up for their first car...
If people are depending on that to make a living, it's pretty sad out there.
I have some considerable ability to comment on this one. Dead end jobs and all.
Started my “career” quite literally at the bottom. Janitorial work. Never had the chance to go to college, except for a couple of classes I took over the years at CCs.
I now earn at the 88th percentile for all US workers. Worked my way up and out and became an expert in my field.
the lady is to be complimented for working...
but she does not understand how the world works.
if she has developed any skills that are in greater demand than slinging burgers, then she will be able to get (indeed, she will be offered) greater pay
if she has not developed any more skills, now is a great time for her to do it. (She can begin getting more job skills economically, too, by checking out what her local community college has to offer ....)
in the 10 years she’s been at McD’s, she could have completed an entire AA or AS degree program...and then quite a bit more, too.........by just taking one class per term.
just one class...
she could have become a nurse, for example...
or lots of other things that pay more than burgerVille...
and there are a lot of job skills that pay more for her...that don’t even require a degree... just a few courses....
Sounds to my like she just another “rent-a-protester.”
A scripted street agitator moment that she is absolutely going to win 100% in the court of public opinion.
Big companies need to get a lot smarter about not taking the bait.
If she doesn’t like the pay, then get another damn job! What is wrong with liberals?
Guaranteed Hussein voter. When one tells these left wing imbeciles to get another job it’s always excuses. Every time.
She may be worth just $3.75 but the liberals hate the free market and won’t allow market rates. These $15 demands they are making now are beyond insane.
For yahoo the comments are sum what heartening...”
Only read the first page of the comments but didn’t see any sympathy expressed for her “plight”. Maybe all those on that page were made by Freepers. LOL
If the wage would go there, the savings would be worth about a third of what they are now and things would cost more through the roof.
“It was designed around the entry level worker, folks transitioning into the work force. Get some skills, move on.”
I agree, half-wise. It was designed to suck so much, serving other people, that you will have to revise your outlook in life and ask yourself “man, I don’t wan to do this sh*tty job, I’ll take my education seriously”..
I did work for McD’s and subway in high school. Promised myself if I end up here at age 30, I will hang myself.
Protesters confront...and "ASK"? The author of this story is a tool.
Quite. Like “asking” the “rich” to “contribute” a “little bit more.”
“She could buy one share of stock in the corporation and speak her mind about management at the stockholders meeting, but that would require some brains.”
Nope. Those meetings do not allow every stock holder the floor. No way they could.
If this woman wants to move up the success ladder, she should work harder than anyone else around her, and she eventually will be rewarded.
“A single mother who has been working at McDonald’s for 10 years...”
Correction: had been working
There is a reason that she is only making $8.25 at McDonald’s after ten years and it has nothing to do with McDonald’s.
“I find it strange shes worked for Mickey Dees for 10 years and is still making $8.25/hr.”
strange? I call it BS
she is lying
OR she keeps quiting and returning
There were options 10 years ago. She might have studied hard and gotten an education or learned a trade which would have a commercial value that increase with experience.
Working McD at 16 for a couple of years is fine so far as it goes, that’s a good start for learning a work ethic, and it’s respectable. But it’s not a job to stay in for 10 years. It is not worth $15/hour in today’s marketplace, especially solely because someone chose to stay in place for 10 years instead of learning more skills and moving up.
I had a janitorial job early in my working life as well.
