WASHINGTON The White House signaled Thursday that President Obama might not sign a bill to pay death benefits to the families of fallen soldiers, leading a top Republican senator to allege the president has hit a "new low."
The Senate approved the bill Thursday afternoon, after it cleared the House a day earlier. The bill would reinstate the $100,000 "death gratuity" payments to military families, as well as resume funeral and burial expenses -- after funding was suspended as a consequence of the partial government shutdown.
But White House Press Secretary Jay Carney claimed the bill was "not necessary," noting that charity group The Fisher House Foundation had just entered into an agreement with the Pentagon a day earlier to provide the benefits in the short-term.
"The legislation is not necessary," Carney said, adding that the Defense Department has already agreed to reimburse the Fisher House.

The Pentagon spoke to the media about this issue FOUR days before the shutdown, it was not really reported, but Obama and Congress KNEW it was going to be an issue and did nothing.
When a Marine’s family just didn’t have the money to go to Dover to claim their loved one that died in combat- or money for funeral and other expenses the Marine Family Organization started raising money to help them. Then it was realized there were several other families in the same boat and Fisher House became involved. Both the Marine organization and Fisher House received and are still getting donations for this. The media did report that, and only then did John McCain and others make statements. Donald Trump offered to pay for the funerals as well.
This president is turning fiscal law and rules of orderly governance absolutely upside down and few people in DC freaking seems to care.
President Stompy Foot is still angry with the American people
If there is an MOA involved the DOD will have a difficult time not reimbursing Fisher House.
thats because the ones who report/parrot about it don’t have a problem with a liberal president doing it. because they are of like minds. they see nothing wrong, they see the pubs as obstructionist and just doing it cuz they hate obama.
now if bush or any repub did this to get conservative stuff passed, they’d be on every night discussing revolution.
..get all this out there people, use your email list to spread this far and wide (to non-FReeps). Levin must be near detonation by now
Obama is nutz on this!
Just came back from the hospital here in Massachusetts, and I overheard a former vet and a nurse discussing this. Both blamed this on the Republicans.
Don't ask me to repeat their convoluted reasoning. I couldn't understand it.
Or the "Offal Office".
since it passed unaniously,
overide the dictator.
0bama the Munificent.
But they close privately owned businesses that pay for themselves on federal land.
The opinion you get depends on the party of the opinionator. Dems will find a way to justify this, Republicans know he’s an effin’ liar. But, a few at the edges have shifted, and none of it is in his direction. Obastard’s the net loser in this, at the end of the day.
I bet he would sign it if it was money going to Muslim terrorists.
Illinois Nazis. I hate Illinois Nazis.
For a long time I have believed Jay Carney had a twisted mentality by the way he postures himself to give briefings. This latest comment as to the problem of a National debt being paid by a private organization is so far out of reasonable response that my mind is now set.
Does Fisher House have such in WRITING?????
Obama’s a major scumbag... hope he keeps doing stupid things, because he’s losing the war here...
You are right. Beck brought this up today, and to this laymen, it seems he has a point. This is a TERRIBLE precedent for the Executive to be incurring debt. How Congress can let this stand is unbelievable.
