White House says bill to pay military death benefits 'not necessary,' senator blasts Obama

WASHINGTON – The White House signaled Thursday that President Obama might not sign a bill to pay death benefits to the families of fallen soldiers, leading a top Republican senator to allege the president has hit a "new low."

The Senate approved the bill Thursday afternoon, after it cleared the House a day earlier. The bill would reinstate the $100,000 "death gratuity" payments to military families, as well as resume funeral and burial expenses -- after funding was suspended as a consequence of the partial government shutdown.

But White House Press Secretary Jay Carney claimed the bill was "not necessary," noting that charity group The Fisher House Foundation had just entered into an agreement with the Pentagon a day earlier to provide the benefits in the short-term.

"The legislation is not necessary," Carney said, adding that the Defense Department has already agreed to reimburse the Fisher House.

How small can you get?

We all know Obama hates the military, but this is beyond all comprehension. The phrase "Spite House" captures the situation.

Obama can veto the law because it’s poorly written, and then write an EO funding the benefits, because he’s King. In other words, he don’t need no law, but he’s munificent. /S

He’ll sign it.

It will be yet another example of where the GOP has successfully set and executed a trap for the Dems with their “piecemeal” funding bill strategy.

So the government has entered into an agreement with a private organization to pay money on its behalf. The government will pay back the money when it gets the authorization to do so. In the meantime, it is, in effect, borrowing the money.

I thought only congress can incur debts on behalf of the government?

While what obastard is doing is outrageous I consider the source of the commentary... John Cornpone from Texas who is looking for any way he can find to get out of the woodshed where he belongs.

Spinator Cornpone is still parading around as Captain Obvious.

Radio station WGIR in Red Hampshire gave credit to McCain for bringing this to the attention of the American people. I must have missed that announcement.

it’s just they always do the opposite of what words come out of their mouths. they say they’ll reimburse them, I immediately read that as Fisher House will never see that money from this administration.

Barryhole has been embarrassed by their response. They’ll never get reimbursed.

POINT: the Senate approved it! The Senate can be moved towards the higher ground! Maybe the spite house is being isolated from the dem senate we might hope and pray.
