7 hours ago Obama: This is not normal Posted by CNN's Gabe LaMonica
Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama on Saturday said House Republican agreement over the need to raise the debt ceiling and reopen the government, without agreement over how long, was a positive development.
Both Houses of the United States Congress are in session this weekend, and in his weekly address, Obama told members of the House and Senate to pass a budget, put people back to work, and end this shutdown.
The President, who updated a group of nearly 150 top U.S. business leaders on Friday on the conversations he has had at the White House since Wednesday on reopening the government and removing the threat of default on the nations credit, said small-business owners have lost contracts, lost customers, and put hiring on hold as a trickle down result of the partial government shutdown.
President Obama said it wouldnt be wise, to temporarily raise the debt ceiling. Kicking the debt ceiling can down the road for a couple months would damage Americas sterling credit rating, he said. The GOP House has proposed raising the debt ceiling for six weeks, and though the United States lost its Standard and Poors triple-A credit rating more than two years ago - on August 5, 2011 - Obama called it unwise to flirt with a first-ever intentional default right in the middle of the holiday shopping season.
This is not normal, said the President,

what’s that old line? “Return to Normalcy?”
Disgusting isn’t. The Dems project their failures on to the Repubs. The Repubs buy it.
In other news it is reported that “U.S. Adds Two Times More Debt than Economic Output in Last 2 Years”.
Not normal indeed.
holiday shopping season???
He manifests his thinking. When it comes to matters of the deepest fiduciary responsibility, he associates them with .....Kwanza shopping...????
Predictable republican cave in.
>> The Repubs buy it.
They act as if they’re operating in a vacuum with no outside support. But that’s obviously ridiculous. So they’re either delusional, lying, or perhaps unwilling participants.
Career politicians have only one prime directive: get re-elected.
Yep they don't want to loose that cushy job they created. . . .
What is not normal is that such an evil entity, a black racist, marxist, radical homosexual that hates white people, America, Freedom, Liberty and the US Constitution is elected twice and has so indebted our Republic that we stand on the precipice of economic destruction while he uses saul alinsky tactics to try and blame anyone and everyone else but his demon self.
holiday shopping season???
No, what he means is the 100 million dollar tax payer funded, 3 week, Hawaiian Christmas vacation, for his friends and family season. He couldn't care less about anything or anyone else, he won!
“Negotiating with Obama is like playing chess with a pigeon.
The pigeon knocks over all the pieces, sh*ts on the board and then struts around like it won the game.”
Why the rush, Obumbles? We haven’t had a budget since you were inaugurated in ‘09, thanks to your henchmen in the Senate. Besides, a budget is so yesterday, when you can spend whatever you want out of your “stash” by decree.
Normal to Obama is: bent over and take it pubbies....
Cruz gave these gutless worms in the GOP the stones to tell Obama ....we are taking our KY jelly back.... At least for the moment...
My hunch at this point is unwilling participants.
Contrary to what a lot of the FR meme, hitting the ceiling will have consequences and some pretty nasty ones at that. While the President and the Treasury have a fiduciary responsibility to prioritize payments the truth remains that we are still spending beyond our means.
And...this would mean under the law...austerity cuts must be determined by the House. Given the fact right now we do not have any adults to negotiate with on the left, given we do not have a democrat party willing to be honest about what needs to be done, given that the press refuses to be the government muckrakers and get the truth out to the Americans ....republicans are really up against a wall.
People still want to believe we’re a “rich” nation and that simply is not the truth. The $225 billion isn’t enough to pay all the bills of the government. So ...since Congress is vested with making the laws that create payments of the debt according to the 14th Amendment...what do they need to do? Sit down like adults and create a budget, create what gets cut and guide the good sinking financial ship to port.
Looking at the situation, I do not see that happening any time soon. So is the answer to have the captain(President) commit suicide and let the ship sink and put all the crew(State) if lifeboats?
In both scenarios a lot of folks are going to get hurt, there is a lot on the table whether people here on FR want to slow down a moment from the meme and think this through. Please note the either way the ship is sinking and the only way to get to port is for there to be a ‘good’ captain. WE do not have a good captain. WE don’t even have a good crew.
I agree with the President, the only thing kicking the can down the road does is extends the stress. His answer is an American Express card with no limit which will only sink the ship faster. His answer is kicking the can down the road ...REAL far this time...like until Feb. of 2016 LOL.
The only way out of this is job creation, business creation, and expanding the tax base(not increasing taxes). NONE of which is even being remotely discussed as it is the President’s policy that has stagnated the country.
What sterling credit rating - Obama caused a drop in our once sterling credit rating so who is he trying to kid?
The Bastard in Chief has no concept of normalcy.
” The Dems project their failures on to the Repubs. The Repubs buy it.”
Repubs need to read Saul Alinsky’s Rules For Radicals.
Look who’s crying normal
Once gain he lies. No one in power is hoping for a default except for the Democrats. He tries to trick the public by equating not raising the ceiling with defaulting. Defaulting is not paying interest or principal. /preaching to the choir
Too bad the captain chose suicide by sinking ship!
Repubs need to read Saul Alinskys Rules For Radicals.
Yes, it should be mandatory reading. Perhaps they’ll get to it when they’re done reading the ACA bill.
It seems absolutely normal common sense to me for the authority to tell the out of control credit card spender that his credit limit is capped.
What’s abnormal about that?
What is abnormal is that the authority would even for a minute consider raising a spend-a-holic’s credit limit.
Now....that is insane.
and raising taxes which may save the ship (government) but further sink the country but he doesn't care about the country.

that’s the whole point !
when you hit the debt ceiling you are forced to a balanced budget all thru spending cuts.
that gives the republicans massive leverage in the negotiations because the default situation is massive spending cuts. if the democrats want to move more slowly to a balanced budget, they are going to have to make major concessions: real spending cuts, real entitlement reform, tax reform, regulatory reform
Senator Obama Criticizes President Obama's Out Of Control Spending
"The fact that we are here today to debate raising Americas debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a Sign that the US Government cannot pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Governments reckless fiscal policies. ...Increasing Americas debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that 'the buck stops here'. Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and Grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better."
-- Senator Barack Obama, March 2006

He’s right. He is not a normal president. A normal president listens to the will of the people. He does not impose his ideology on them once he knows they disagree. A normal president doesn’t shut down parks out of spite.
Cloward-Piven is not normal...it’s an abomination.
Where can I buy a Tea Party t-shirt?
Sort of like passing massive government takeovers of one sixteenth of the US economy without reading the bill before your party alone passes it,right Mr. PHYSCOPATH?
It is “not normal” for the President to be so detached from reality, or to expect the American people to believe such obvious and persistent lies.
Once they stand for re-election, the deals are made—self-interest prevails over the general welfare.
I would like to know not only who visited the White House, but every Republican Senator.
Hire Americans.
Bring back American jobs. The problem is we’ve sent the economic base which helped build America, to a gigantic communist country (China) with no Plan B.
Well the time for a Plan B has arrived.
Bring back American jobs.
And they do not have the guts to make major spending cuts. Why not? Because then 0bama would have to be straight-up with the American people and explain these past 5 years have been a sham. Instead, they will leave it to the big bad Tea Party Republicans to sort out and take the blame.
I said this would happen even if Mitt Romney was elected. It would not matter who was President, this was coming. The democrats would have fought us either way and the propaganda mush-head media would have blamed Romney for the collapse. The only thing Romney had going for him was he was a business man and I honestly felt he would have been able to lead us out of the economic disaster. Keyword there was ...lead...
LOL. I got that in an email this week.
Their view of life outside government / the Beltway is very, very limited. Other than the pain forced by Obama, this government “shutdown” has been a big nothing.
so did I
The past 5 or so years haven’t been normal.
He is SO close to achieving his goal of the complete government takeover of healthcare.
“Return to Normalcy” entailed getting the government out of the way. Eggheads have hated Warren Harding ever since.
Actually, it is normal for people in your position who do not possess even the most elementary understanding of leadership.
We must put a lid on illegal immigration or there will be catastrophic consequences including presidents like BHO becoming the new normal. I’m going to fight tooth and nail to get Ted Cruz elected! Ted Cruz is the normal America needs to put America back as the leader of the free world.
Obama: This is not normal
I agree. Neither Obama nor the Obamabots are normal.
He’ll do them without the KY and they will like it.
His lips were moving so he’s lying again.
Talk about “not normal”....LMAO!!!
Is this guy off his meds again???
Obama's idea of normalcy is Reggie Love and a tube of KY jelly.

The Debt Ceiling is the Law of the Land

Over the past few weeks, Democrats have indicated that they have no intention of negotiating over Obamacare, opting instead to shut down the government. They are justifying their obstinacy by asserting that Obamacare is the law of the land. Well, if that is the game they want to play, we should return the favor with the debt ceiling. The debt ceiling, pursuant to the Second Liberty Bond Act of 1917, is the law of the land. And it has been so for far longer than Obamacare.
Throughout this debate over funding Obamacare in the budget bill, House GOP leaders have stressed how the debt ceiling was the more appropriate means of fighting Obamacare. After all, it was the next fight. But as if on cue, some Republicans are already using the same Democrat talking points about the risk of default.
We are going to hear this erroneous talking point propagated by both parties over the next few weeks, so lets put the myth to rest. The only way we default on the debt is if we fail to pay the interest on the public debt. According to the updated budget projection from the CBO, interest on the debt will be roughly $237 billion for 2014. Thanks to the short-term revenue benefits of the fiscal cliff and Obamacare tax hikes, the federal government is expected to rake in a record $3.042 trillion from the private economy this year.
Lets engage in a simple math exercise. $3.042 trillion $237 billion = $2.805 trillion. As long as the Treasury pays the first $237 billion in revenue to the shareholders of our debt, there will be no default, and we will have $2.805 trillion left to spend. Again, default is taken off the table. Discussion over.
What do you do with the remaining funds? You start funding core functions of government and those programs that people are already dependent on.
Social Security (retirement and disability) $848 billion
Medicare $505 billion
Medicaid $298 billion
Defense $582 billion
Veterans $83 billion
Those expenditures account for roughly $2.3 trillion. The remaining half trillion can be prioritized as needed for other functions related to homeland security, national parks, or any other limited function.
Hence, the debt ceiling is a built-in balanced budget mechanism. If Democrats want to fund other functions of government, they need to commit to a balanced budget. If they want to fund the HHS and the IRS, they need to get rid of Obamacare. If they want to fund the EPA, they need to get rid of the war on coal.
The power of the purse manifest in the House of Representatives, in conjunction with the debt ceiling law, reflects democracy at work, especially with divided government. Its time we stop peddling the myth of default, and start using our leverage to restore constitutional government and bring relief to those who are losing jobs and suffering from the high cost of living engendered by the harmful activities of the unconstitutional aspects of government.
