enate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) are taking the lead on talks to raise the debt limit and reopen the government, according to senators.
Reid and McConnell are working off a six-point proposal sponsored by Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) that would fund the government for six months and raise the debt ceiling until Jan. 31, 2014. Senators view discussions between the two leaders as a promising sign of potential bipartisan compromise.
Reid and McConnell are talking now and those discussions continue so I see that as progress, said Senate Republican Whip John Cornyn (R-Texas).
There are a number of different elements, he added. The fact that theyre actually talking for the first time represents significant progress.
The real conversation that matters now is the one that's taking place between McConnell and Reid, said Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.). We're at place where something important has evolved.
Earnest" talks between the two Senate party leaders began in the last 24 hours, as talks between the White House and House Republicans fizzled, he said.
Corker said Senate Republicans were providing McConnell with "a lot of support" in the fledgling talks.....

Didn’t need to read any farther than Republican Leader Mitch McConnell. They better be in it for the long haul now, Cave, and lose big in 2014. They will be blamed for the shut down by low information voters, and the base will stay home angry.
Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) and Susan Collins are not part of a bipartisan group they are both screaming liberal scumbags.
All of this is just playing kick the can unless there are serious proposals to reduce spending.
Reaching the debt limit would result in instant budget balancing.
Uhhhh, what right does the senate have to negotiate a settlement. Reid needs to be negotiating with the house. The senate can do nothing about the budget impass. I’m not sure they can do anything other than approve a measure passed by the house.
The Democrats do not want a deal. It is all or nothing. Senate GOP needs to shut up and quit badmouthing each other. The enemy is not us. Perhaps they might take a spell and figure out how to dump all this where it belongs. On Obama and Harry Reid.
Now they just look like the fools that we know so many of them to be. The senior GOP thought they were so smart and now they get kicked in the arse.
Regardless of what RINO Collins proposes and Reid and McConnell work out, the House Republicans are already saying her proposal has serious flaws which makes it unacceptable according to an interview of a Representative on FOX.
this will end badly for we the people if this succeeds .
Look at the Surrender Caucus go, bro!
You two just grab each others’ peckers then and “seal the deal.” When you two come up with something ASK Senator Cruz if it will fly....HAHAHAHHAAHAHAHAHA!!! Dipsh!ts
Well they provide the appearance of doing something while sipping cognac, smoking cigars and eating 5 star meals.
Republican leader Mr. Tortoise. That says it all!
Figures that Cornyn is right there in this mix.
Yes, the debt ceiling is a balanced budget amendment without all the hassle.
Yes - blamed for a shutdown that made everyone realize how little we really need government.
This is all old school guys trying to get the limelight back from Cruz.
Pretty clear now that the Dems won’t agree to ANY deal before the 17th.
The GOP needs to refocus on a few populist themes and carpet bomb vulnerable Dems with them. Issues like the device tax and individual mandate are sitting set up in the wheel house yet the surrender monkey GOP refuses to use the sledge hammer.
Good! The Republicans need to stop quivering and stop negotiating. The only thing saving us right now is Obama stopping them from throwing away their power!!
I guess Reid figures he can roll McConnell. He may be in for a surprise, tho’, since McC is being primaried.
Why would Rats want it to end? They know the shutdown is mostly just for show, and as they see it, the GOP is comitting political suicide.
For sure, they want no one with an R after their name associated with any resolution.
As distasteful as it is, when the government reopens and the debt limit is raised the House GOP needs to put the Senate on notice. no more CRs. The Senate needs to pass a budget and go to conference. To make it easy, Boehner should give them the numbers.
Might as well just hand Pelosi the gavel back.
We need Checks and Balances, not backroom deals!
There is nothing Harry Reid wants to hear from Mitch McConnell except ‘’I surrender.’’
So, unless Mitch McConnell is planning to cave, he should NOT be meeting with Harry Reid, except maybe to read him the section of the Constitution that states, ‘’All Bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives.’’
If John Boehner and the House stand firm, a meeting between Mitch McConnell and Harry Reid has no more significance than a meeting between two drunks at a neighborhood bar.
The House must stand firm.
Too late, unless of course, they want to show what LOSERS they are.
I’m all for CruzeControl.
Crowley denies that he touched the staffer:
“.......... But Crowley said he never touched Vieson and that the GOP aide apologized to him for being rude.
“What I said to him was that I thought that his behavior on the House floor was not fitting with the decorum of the House,” Crowley told reporters. “He agreed, and he apologized.”
The Democrats were trying to force a floor vote on their bill to re-open the federal government without any concessions to Republicans.
Crowley said that Vieson was yelling at Democrats, saying the House would not allow a vote on the bill.
Crowley said he told Vieson, “A staffer is shutting down democracy,” and he claimed Vieson replied, “That’s right.”
“And then I went up to him and said, ‘That’s inappropriate to act in the way in which you did,’” Crowley said. He added that Vieson then apologized and that he accepted the apology.
Cantor’s office did not respond to a request to provide more details about the altercation.
Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said the incident initially began as a dispute between Vieson and one of Hoyer’s staffers.
Hoyer claimed Republicans were upset with the Democratic push to open the government.
“That frustration, I think, boiled over,” Hoyer said. “This staffer - he’s a good person — got a little exercised.”
Reid will roll McConnell like a Harlem whore.....
McConnell IS Reids whore.
They can talk and pretend all they want, but the fact of the matter is that it’s the House and NOT the Senate that controls the public purse.
That's a distinction without a difference.

Cornyn is making me nuts with the carpet bombing ad campaign on radio the past few weeks.
“I’m a real conservative and I support Ted Cruz, Honest!”
“A working lunch”
I live in Cincinnati, and Midge McConnell is running radio ads here non-stop touting what a conservative he is. Makes me want to puke!
Mitchy is doomed at the ballot box. Buh bye.
Republican conservatives under the banner of the tea party movement is not mainstream but “moderate Me Too republicans” (now refered to as democrat lite) is.
This is the new mantra led off by the AP and supported by a NBC phoney poll the media is using given to them by the Demo-Com central commandantura. CNNs Van Jones was on 10/10/13 am 890s WLS morning show. Jones opened his fly and started flashing the same pitch. And was told to zip it. .It’s just sad the GOPES (gop Elite Snobs) continue with their stupid Pustch to purge conservatives. The question is will some historian in a future year reviewing the demise of the Republican party make the claim the Republican leadership of this era were working with the socialist/communists to purge the party of the conservatives ?
BTW (by the way) WLS’s morning show hosts has been doing a decent job of exposing these demo-com media poseurs spreading that message.
The media could be given a sound trashing by conservative talk shows just citing the stuff they were using to incite racial strife which has resulted in black youths (mainly) attacks on whites and hispanics resulting in deaths. But its not even being approached. Not only (pardon the pun) collectively, but individually.
Doing so would clearly point out that the visual and print media will are deep in the socialist agenda sewer with the regime. They are creating an America its citizens does not know.
Because each one of the media alphabet soup kitchens individually cooked up socialist concoctions following the cue given them by The POTUS Obama. Falling all over each other defending Obamas mere comments If I had a son and That could have been me utterances which served as cues to the direction the propapganda was to take.
The fact that The POTUS embelished one statement after another. And as POTUS had to have full knowledge of the circumstaces of the Florida episode which in essence was a black on black episode. Yet POTUS Obama decided to manipulate the facts into a full blown racial incident to furthur a socialist concept and inflame a political base makes the Je Accuse Dreyfus scandal look like French pastry.
Letting POTUS Obama and his media get away with this travesty particularly by the clueless political opposition boggles the mind. But the facts are that’s what the conservative movement called the “tea party” is dealing with.
Cornyn is a pile of crap who controls all of the Republican Party’s campaign money. That’s why they’re all scared of him, and Ted Cruz is not going to need his money because we’re going to take care of him!
