Experts have advice for women, such as Crews and Duff, when it comes to protecting yourself from a potential sexual assault or abduction.
"Really some of the simplest techniques to use are just walk with confidence. Don't be a target in how you're walking. Don't close yourself off, hunch over, don't seem timid or scared from the environment. Walk with authority," said Tina Toth, who is a sexual assault counselor for the Rape Crisis Center.
She adds that predators tend to act on opportunity, so finding ways to limit your vulnerability is important.
Other safety and self-defense practices include having a buddy system in place if you are leaving work or a location late at night, as well as staying in-touch with friends and/or family if you are in an unfamiliar area and letting them know how long you plan to stay there and when you plan to leave.

Stand your ground and take them out. They won’t attack anyone ever again.
Carry yourself upright = don’t let the weight of the Ladysmith in your shoulder holster affect your posture...
The second - and third and fourth - defense against rape includes a loaded .38.
Never a mention of the most effective way to defend yourself. A GUN. Amazing.
“Never a mention of the most effective way to defend yourself. A GUN.”
With one in the chamber ready to go!
Even moreso, as a CCW instructor tells her students, “whether you’re carrying or not, always walk and act as if you are”.
My comment:
“What? No mention of Sam Colt’s “equalizer,” that made the 100 pound woman the equal of the 300 pound brute? My wife and millions of women have not been brainwashed into physical defenselessness. Awareness and posture are fantastic, but in the end, it’s a firearm that makes a rapist, or a gang of rapists, stop an attack.”
Check out Matt Bracken’s (FR’s Travis McGee) comment at bottom of article.
I’m too slow...see #8 above.
Walk with Authority.
and a 38 between your 38s.
Good for your wife! The mainstream media still tries desperately to convince women that self defense with a firearm is frowned upon by most women. However, women are wisely dispelling that ridiculous myth.
Samuel Colt understood the best way to end a violent attack is by stopping the attacker. Liberals say just submit to your attacker because submitting is what they do best.
April has not been assaulted yet, she will rethink all of her stupid tactics and resort to a firearm if this should ever happen, thank you
That is the right idea!
I am convinced that in an urban defense situation, it is essential to have a gun *and* a knife. And you absolutely must have situational awareness.
If they sneak up behind you and bonk you on the head, you lose.
If they leap out at you, you can draw a knife very quick, and if they see it and jump back, you can draw your gun.
If they close on you quickly with a knife, even at short range you can likely also get your knife.
If they are further away and charge, within 25 feet, knife, and outside 25 feet, gun.
If they have a gun and yours is concealed, you still have a lot of advantages.
I told my Daughter around 30 years ago to be aware at all times, to run and scream if she could. I also gave her a Colt Agent which she could shoot very well.
I told her it was illegal in most places to carry it in your purse or person. It would be up to her to decide.
Not sure if it was the best advice but you just never know for sure. For some reason she always liked knives even to this day she still does. A gun is better tho.
I hope that April does not find out the hard way. I fear for these liberal women sometimes. Idealism does not protect them from violence.
I like that! Lol! And make sure your assailant is no longer upright.
When you are carrying your confidence is seen in the way you walk and make eye contact. They bad guys do “pick up” on this feeling of confidence. They are predators and look for the weak to prey upon.
Kel-Tec, Glock, Sig, Smith & Wesson, Colt etc are a woman’s best friend when predators are about. If you have on you, it is very unlikely that you will need to use it. If you do not have it when you need, you will be hurt, robbed, raped and perhaps worse up into including torture and death.
Ladies, if you do not have a concealed carry, get one. If you live in California, Massachutches, New York, Washington DC or Chicago, move.
I carry a golf club when I go for my walks, mainly for dogs, but I also walk with authority. But I am also prepared for anything.
To plagiarize the late, unlamented Chairman Mao (SBUH): “Confidence grows out of the muzzle of a gun.”
I agree. I am not suggesting a gun is the only way to defend yourself. A knife is a great self defense tool too and situational awareness is always key.
I notice that media articles about self defense always mention situational awareness as they should; however, I also notice the media never mentions using knives or guns to defend yourself.
“If they sneak up behind you and bonk you on the head, you lose.”
True, unfortunately these days many women (and men) are glued to their smartphone screens, COMPLETELY oblivious to everything else...
“I carry a golf club”
If I’m having a “bad knee” day, I also carry my hollow metal cane, weighted at both ends with epoxied in lead shot. Skull/rib/arm breaker!
You did the right thing by telling your daughter that and arming her. There is nothing wrong with having options to defend yourself. A knife can be better than a gun in really close quarters.
Colorado University Advises Students to Urinate, Vomit to Stop Rapists

Great advice! Thank you.
A gun is best, but when one is not available, anything is a weapon...
As a college student in the days when you paid for your own degree, I worked as a cocktail waitress-taking the pistol my parents gave me to work was a no-no. 0ne Friday night, I’d just gotten off the 12:30 bus-couldn’t afford a car-to walk the 5-6 blocks to my apartment when I heard running footsteps behind me, and someone grabbed my shoulder.
I thought immediately of robbery-it was a weekend night, I’d made a small fortune in tips that I couldn’t afford to lose-I saw red, yelled profanities, kicked with my boots and swung my purse hard as I could as I turned. I heard a yowl and someone fell to the ground, as I ran yelling to the icehouse a block or so away. To sum up-I’d broken the nose and cheekbone of a hoodrat with my (heavy) purse-cops picked him up off the ground with a bloody face-he admitted he’d watched me get off the bus after work before, and intended to take my money.
All that stuff about walking a certain way sounds bogus-and I carry my gun when I’m going to be in an iffy place now, but that big purse sure saved my rent and food money...
Chairman Mao would certainly know about that as do all of these communist revolutionaries. They have no problem using guns with confidence. They just do not want their opposition doing the same.
I can get by without it but am getting to where arthritis particularly bothers my back. If I use a walking stick to support me the back pain is far less.
I bought an aluminum cane at the drug store and it is pretty ideal for it’s purpose. Still it is a bit light for defense so I ordered a Cold Steel blackthorne.
I was surprised how heavy it is and it is not as good as a cane for walking but it sure would break bones etc. if used properly. It carries a very large round head.
I think they got that mixed up with advice to Boehner.
I would advise urinating and vomiting on the people who suggested trying that. Like I said, these liberals live in fantasy land! It makes me shudder.
“Equalizer” is a M-F equal opportunity concept.
Now that would be an appropriate Christmas present.
Remember Mile Royko, writer for a Chicago newspaper? Anti-gun to the core till he heard of a woman kidnapped, raped, dropped off in a bad part of town, raped again.
He became very pro-gun after that.
I am glad that you were alright. You have to do whatever it takes to survive. You must sling a heck of a purse!
What I have always recommended to people who don't shoot a lot is a snubby revolver in .44 Special (not .44 Magnum, that's dumb, too much recoil.) The Charter Arms Bulldog in .44 Sp is a great self-defense firearm at close quarters, quite concealable and simple to operate - just pull the trigger.
If you really think that there are druggies setting up an operation, though, you might want to alert your sheriff, if he's one of the good ones. Druggies are extremely well armed as a general rule, and you would be outnumbered in a firefight.
That will seriously get the attention of anybody who gets clocked with it.
I have a place in the mountains. Currently I feel safer in the large city I live in than the little mountain town due to the druggies/ homeless that have invaded the mountain communities.
I gave my daughter a 9mm pistol and took her to the range alot. She has been going to the range with me for years now. Not only is she very proficient with a pistol, she can shoot my AR and AK pattern rifle like a boss. :-D
I just took her and her friend shooting earlier today. Her friend had never shot a gun before. Now, she can safely shoot and field strip a pistol. Both of these girls are getting their CCWs in couple of weeks. They told me it felt empowering. I told them that it is the great equalizer. If you are patient, teach gun safety, and stress training and situational awareness in life, you can give the women in your life the perfect tool for self-protection. I am happy knowing that my daughter can protect herself if she is ever faced with a serious threat.

Here are my choices. The aluminum one is fine as a walking stick but too light for serious use. The blackthorne is really too heavy for a walking stick but I think I will use it anyway. The wooden one with a handle is huckleberry. I made it for my Mother many years ago but I have used it a lot. Huckleberry is extremely dense and hard. It would do a fair job on most people. Just a little too light tho. The long hiking stick is made from Hickory. It is larger than they recommend for hiking (shoulder height). Mine is around 7 feet long and would make a fine weapon.
Hey, it is deadly to try to get between a college student and the tips she was on her feet serving drinks for hours to make...
I’ve always done at least some construction work-it makes for a hard swing-but I carry the same stuff in my purse that most women do-have you ever seen all the s*** in a woman’s purse? A good sized one like I carry weighs at least 8-10 lbs-lays waste to a nose easily...
They teach stick fighting and it's very effective.
This is the founder, O Sensei (Morihei Ueshiba), demonstrating. Pretty cool historical footage - he was not a big man but he could whack the heck out of much bigger guys and make it look easy.
Of copurse, for ME it would be a 44. LOL!
I bet you can get a nice swing with that club! :-)
We had some very basic training in self defense when I was a Federal Agent. I have never been in a lot of fights but in my entire life I have never lost one.
I was wrestling champ of our college track team and that included some really big strong guys. The one who gave me fits was a pole vaulter smaller than me. One of the big guys gave me a separated shoulder but I won anyway. Fortunately it was the final match.
If I ran across a trained fighter, I would not stand a chance now but that is not likely. The fact that I just about always have a cane, gun and knife would help tho.
