EBT system failure blocks food stamp debit cards
WLS - Chicago ^ | October 12, 2013 | By Eric Horng

Posted on 10/12/2013 9:17:23 PM PDT by Oldeconomybuyer

Full carts abandoned at Chicago grocery stores were a common sight as shoppers in Illinois and many other states have been unable to use their food stamp debit cards.

More than two million people in Illinois use a so-called Link Card. That's one in six residents in the state. So when suddenly the system went down Saturday morning many customers just walked out of the store.

"Now I'm going to have to unfortunately do the fast food thing now. No cooking tonight," said Link Card user Rob Lee.

"That's how people starve," said shopper Sean Wright. "People starve if they don't have the Link to feed their children, to feed their family with."

It’s pitiful to see so many millions of Americans thoroughly dependent on EBT. This is where Democrat policy leads. Some Democrats might very well care about these people, but making them wards of the state is NOT the answer. What in the world is going to happen to these people when the EBT cards truly fail? If we don’t start weaning people off of government, it WILL fail, and the progressives will be responsible for the deaths of many more millions like the ones killed in the 20th Century in the left’s bid to fundamentally transform other nations. We must succeed. We must restore our liberty, our self reliance, and our human dignity.

I can't believe they just left the carts. Classless.

One time I was overseas and I went through the check out with a cart full of food. I went to pay with a credit card and the checker insisted I had a pin. I didn't have a pin. After a round or two of arguing in English he didn't really understand, I gave up. I was pissed but I humbly went back with my full cart and put all the stuff back. It was completely embarrassing but not as embarrassing as leaving a cart there for some innocent bystander to put away.

Entitlement mentality at it's finest.

2 Thessalonians 10-12:

10 For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.

11 For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies.

12 Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread.

Leaving the food in the carts...the health department may condemn all the meats.

The GOP needs to start running adds and stating that this is what will happen to health care when obama care runs out of money. Then state that the GOP tried to pass a bill to stop this shut down of the EBT program but the dems refused to pass the bill.

1. If they can afford fast food they don't need EBT. and
2. They've got nothing in the frig or cupboards that will suffice for a meal or two?

They’re going to do a fast food run because they can’t afford a full cart of groceries? What’s wrong with a 99 cent jar or tin of pasta sauce, a 99 cent box of pasta, and a buck bag of frozen broccoli? It makes a ridiculous quantity of food compared to three McDoubles.

I thought the same. We’re almost half through the month. Presumably this isn’t her first shopping trip this month since getting Oct. benefits. A certain percentage of my groceries are always stock-up staples-rice, flour, powdered milk, canned food, pasta, etc., things you can put a meal together with in an emergency. This is a good plan in case of snowstorms, illness, etc. for example here we may be having a grocery workers strike a d Ive decided not to cross the picket line, so Ive been stocking up. I also happen to have a lot of homemade soup and stuff in the freezer which would come in handy.
These were some of the same people who I suspect had so many travails during Hurricane Katrina, and for some of the same reasons.
I do t know if stories of riots are true but if so, it shows that not that much s**t really needs to hit the fan before things unravel.

If they have the cash for fast food, they have enough for a few meals’ worth of groceries. $20 can buy a lot of food if you know how to shop.

I just bought 30 pounds of fresh white fish that was gutted, deboned, and skinned for $45 tonight. Vacuumed sealed it with my daughter and froze it. These people just don't know how to shop because their food is free.

Oh and it cost another $1.5 for the 26 vacuum bags.

It amazes me how unprepared a lot of people are in the groceries/cooking department. I have plenty of food not only for an emergency, but because I buy ahead on things that are on sale.

It would suck if I went to the grocery store and couldn’t pick up fresh things like milk, fruit, or vegetables.....but I sure wouldn’t be going hungry for a good long while.

I can get the ingredients for 5 servings of spaghetti for less than $15, chicken leg quarters are usually less than $1.50 each, pork chops are dirt cheap, and side ribs usually run less than $2/serving. I could eat steak every night and still spend less than someone eating at McD’s.

I had the wind knocked outta me financially last year and my "stock" kept me afloat for a while. I didn't like how much I depleted myself, but it served its purpose. I learned from that experience and have since re-built my stock from my learning. You are right, some things we have to go without, but feeling a bit of pain tends to make the more intelligent among us learn to plan better.

I'm at about four, maybe five months if I conserve heavily on my stock, in a total "shelter in place" scenario (i.e., I won't have to leave my property at all). Still, I feel un-easy and am looking for every little bit I can plan for.

Coupled with 34 states having "computer glitches" with zero-care and now 17 (hmm..half of 34? ironic I guess) with ebt computer problems; color me skeptical about what is going on here.

What motivated me to no ends was a “micro-burst” (that’s what local “officials” call it when they want to spare insurance companies from tornado damage claims) last year DURING my mini-financial collapse and both ends of my two entrance road were closed off due to downed trees for multiple days (and no electricity). Plan as if you won’t have electricity for many weeks (months?) and learn how to start fires. This may sound lame, but depending on where you live, join your local mushroom club; you can feed yourself quite well on them (I am learning quite a bit on top of literally making a salad out of what is growing naturally all around my property). —BE CAREFUL with mushrooms, VERY careful. Join a club if one exists around you and freepmail me if you would like info on a good book...

What about the Food Pantries? They are out there and it's up to everyone who need assistance with obtaining food to have a list of the Food Panties they can contact. Contact your local church, or the government offices in your county for info on the nearest pantries in your area.

God bless the Food Pantries and those who volunteer to help dispense the food. There are American citizens out there who because of age, disability/illness or loss of employment do need assistance obtaining food for themselves and their families. And to the illegals and the bums who live off the backs of you and I, I say it's just too damn bad for you.

The problem is easily solved.

Make it illegal for Democrats and Liberals to have a lock on their front door.

That way their fellow Progressives can get what they need when they need it.

They certainly don’t want to be mean spirited like those Evil Conservative and Republican types.
