CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) - Trayvon Martin's father was in Chattanooga Saturday, speaking to young boys for the 4th Annual Boys Leadership Summit.
It's to raise awareness on the importance of the future. Tracy Martin says after his son was killed last year, he wants to be an encouragement to young people to help make sure no other parents have to go through what he went through.
"It always takes a tragic event to awaken the communities around the country, it just so happened the tragic event happened in my life," said Tracy Martin, Trayvon Martin's Father.
That tragic event was losing his son, Trayvon. Tracy Martin says it's been a difficult road for his family.
"Leaning on the shoulders of God. It is a good God up there. People sending up prayers for us from all over, people who don't even know us and that helps us get by," said Martin.
But he's trying to make the best of a bad situation.
"Knowing nothing that I do or say can bring him back is now moving towards what can I do to make sure none of these kids parents wake up in the morning and go through the same thing that I had to go through," said Martin
He says it starts with talking to your kids.
"I think it's imperative that we continue to get our message out to the youth that we as parents, as fathers, that we are here for them and that we love them. They are the leaders of tomorrow," said Martin.
Martin says the key to that success s education.
"Without education there is no tomorrow. We have to educate ourselves as youth and we as parents have to make sure our students get educated," said Martin.
And his hope by doing this to help move young people forward in the right direction.
"No one wakes up in the morning and looks for their loved one to be dead or whatever. But in the wake of a tragic event you try to do something positive," said Martin.
The Boys Leadership Summit targets males in grades 6 through 12 and it involves workshops, training and other activities to help attendees learn to cope with issues and problems facing the youth today.

He left the wife and shacked up with another “lady”(?). The mother and the school threw out Trayvon for being totally unruly. Now both “parents” trying to jump on the money grail. ‘Nuf said!!!

And who fed you that statement to give? Burglary tools, jewelry, drugs...a little quiet on those fronts.
But won't that be all "actin' white"?
You can bet he didn’t pay hos own way to Chattanooga.
That only applies to White kids who wear an American flag Tee shirt to school on Cinco De Mayo.
and yet the parents are acting like they raised a sterling individual. What a crock.
No mention of injustice, racism, or racist laws? Possibly waking up to the fact Trayvon was not the innocent angel the media portrayed him as...
Or maybe that part just wasn’t reported...
Did he explain to them that what they call “whoop-ass” in the ‘hood is called “felony assault” everywhere else, and can get you shot?
Did he show them his Crips tat ?

Reminds me of desegregation in Little Rock. Forty years later, the girl who desegregated the place went back and gave a talk, on her experiences, to the students at Central High.
She noticed the black kids had their heads on the desks and were not interested in what she had to say.
She then realized SHE went through hell, so black kids could go to a white school, put their heads on the desk, and refuse to learn.
